Wow!
phantom-2025 April 2017
Pretty damned impressive! nuff said! it Maybe not! it is pretty damned sad when a fan film is better than the three prequels. The story is good and fits in the "Star Wars" universe. I hate when fans whine about how a studio screwed up a franchise and how they could do it better...Only to turn out terrible, amateurish drive;l! Not so here! This director has a future and all of the acting is solid, something devoid in your average fan film. The actor who plays Solo, just doesn't ape Harrison Ford, there is acting and a character going on As a stuntman and stunt coordinator, i have to commend you on the fight scene. Shot sp you can see what is going on, without shaky cam and weasel on acid hyper editing. Bravo, well done

I usually don't rate fan films, but this was excellent.

Typically when it comes to fan creations, there's not enough to warrant making a stink about them as the constraints tend to make them not particularly notable. Once in a while something special comes along that captures the tone and feel of the source material that it should be mentioned. This is one of them...

While, yes, this does suffer from budget constraints and actors who aren't exactly seasoned but they all hit it pretty dead on. I imagine if you gave these people a solid budget, they could do wonders for a real Han Solo movie. This short itself is a fantastic starting point for what could have been a full film. Aside from the obvious wonkiness of trying to get used to someone else playing Solo, Jamie Costa fits the bill pretty darn close...all things considered. Chewy was on point, and outside of the Dash Rendar costume all of the wardrobe looked great.

Everything else was just about right where it needed to be: The plot was fun and charming, the tone and look of everything felt distinctly Star Wars, and Han's dialogue was very fitting. If only somehow we had a Harrison Ford time machine (or Anthony Ingruber) to slap the real Han into this film, then we'd be ready for takeoff.

It's wort all 13 minute of runtime on Youtube, so check it out.

I really liked this movie. I am a Star Wars fan and was hoping this would give a goid origin story for a few of our favorite characters, and it delivers. I would recommend it.

Very Good for Fan Movie, Better actors than Solo
chris_patx31 December 2018
The group with Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) should have brought Jamie Costa in as Han Solo. He is much more like Han Solo than the one in Solo. Considering the horsepower of Disney and having Ron Howard for a director, the "official" Han Solo movie really didn't hit it as well as this one. While it isn't all that long, it is a well-done story that holds your interest and the characters all fit the characters we have known through the decades.

Visually fine fan film, but story not good enough
Horst_In_Translation14 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
"Han Solo: A Smuggler's Trade" is a 13-minute live action short film from December 2016 that managed to get pretty popular through Youtube. The title already tells you that it jumps on the recent Star Wars bandwagon and here we have Han Solo out on his quest to save Chewbacca who is held captive by a bad guy. That's all there is to it. The scene early on with the green lady and the firing in the desert feels very random and thrown in with no further connection to the story. Visually, in terms of sets, costumes and effects, it is above-average for a fan film, but the story is really only good enough for half the runtime. This is a bit of a shame as with Doug Jones (playing the bad guy) this one has an actor with a talent and experience that is usually not to be found in short films, especially rookie works because this is the very first credit for writer and director Keith Allen. The Han Solo actor looks the part physically, especially in costume, but his recurring smile is not working. And there are more problems with this movie if you look at it in detail, for example how he shouts at Chewbacca while fighting and the bad guy won't even mind. So yeah, it's a relatively forgettable film and only worth seeing for the very biggest Star Wars fans. Everybody else can skip it and they won't be missing much. I give it a thumbs-down.

Awesome!

A simple but fun story, great fight scenes, you get that star wars feeling. Jamie Costa is amazing! The facial expressions, the movements and the way of speaking (thank you, writers!) make you believe it's the real Han Solo even though it's not Harrison Ford! Unbelievable!!! As one of the other reviewers said, they should have cast J. Costa for the 'Solo: A Star Wars Story'. Maybe it would have saved it from the total disaster.

Excellent fan fiction!

A great, fun ride, done on a budget, but with likeable characters and actors who were into their parts. Liked seeing Doug Jones before Star Trek. Great fun! Never mess with a Wookie!

Awful

There have been a couple of duds amongst the Star Wars films but this is the worse yet. Truly awful. Felt like a poor copy of Guardians of the Galaxy .

Ok but it felt like they tried way too hard
eibmozzz3 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
It really just felt like they overdid it for me, they main issue that I have is that it looks like Han didn't accomplish anything before the movie or after the movies, all than Han is (even the "Han shoots first") happened in the movie, and for me it was a little bit much. I think I would've liked it better if for example he already knew Chewbacca or something like that

Fun ride!

Great summer show. Han is great along with the supporting cast. Fun plot twist. I think at home viewing will be sketchy because of the way it was shot. It was a little hard to see on the big screen and the obscurity may make it a movie that we don't watch again and again at home. Overall it was very enjoyable.
