Richard Garriott paid $20 million to get a ride in space, and took this opportunity to also make this movie. Since all actors in this movie were volunteers, the budget of this movie is arguably anything from zero to twenty million dollars.
This movie is variously billed as "The first SciFi Movie made in Space" and "The first Horror Movie made in Space". This is because the first movie in general that was filmed in space was the IMAX movie "A Beautiful Planet".
Richard Garriott filmed this in 2008, but NASA blocked the release of the movie, on the basis that two of the actors were on the NASA payroll and working on NASA time. They relented after press attention in 2012 due to the release of the documentary "Man on a Mission: Richard Garriott's Road to the Stars" about Richard's time on the ISS, and it was included as an extra on the DVD version of that documentary.
