Rounding up the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood, as voted on by hundreds of film executives, The Black List has been a strong resource to clue one in on projects to potentially anticipate, but first, to kickstart Hollywood on bringing them to screen. Last year’s chart-topper, the Madonna film Blonde Ambition by Elyse Hollander, was picked up by Universal Pictures and also in the top five was Liz Hannah’s The Post, which Steven Spielberg turned out quite fast. Today we have this year’s edition.
Topping the 2017 edition we have the post-wwii drama Ruin by Matthew Firpo and Ryan Firpo, which Gal Gadot is set to star in with direction by Macbeth and Snowtown‘s Justin Kurzel. Also among the list is the abortion drama Let Her Speak, the story of Anne Frank’s diary, Keeper of the Diary (which will be directed by Kenneth Branagh at Focus Features...

Ginger Zee is getting candid about the struggles she's been through.
The 36-year-old ABC News chief meteorologist sat down with her Good Morning America colleague Robin Roberts on Tuesday to talk about her new memoir, Natural Disaster: I Cover Them, I Am One, which goes into detail about her battle with depression and how in 2011 she checked herself into a mental hospital to seek treatment.
"I fought a disease called depression that a lot of people fight every, single day," Zee explained. "And just like any disease there is a stigma or, unlike other diseases, there is a stigma surrounding it. And I want to help the hundreds of thousands or millions that are dealing with or dealt with something I did. And I want them to be able to fight without shame."
Roberts praised Zee for not holding back and even admitting that she thought about taking her own life.

Breaking news: you're allowed to like both DC and Marvel movies. Why, then, is a subset of online fandom so hostile to the idea?
In our interview with Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat a week or two back, he lamented the fact that online fandom has become so fierce in some quarters that the ideal of writers and fans sitting around the same proverbial bonfire has become a pipe dream. Moffat’s argument was that he and many people who work on Doctor Who would love to have more conversations with fans, but that the hostility online often makes that impossible. People who make films and TV shows are now actively being warned about online fan response before they take jobs on. Because it’s known that, at its worst, fan response can get very personal, very hurtful, and very nasty.

A prominent commercial filmmaker in Hong Kong since the mid-80s, the career path and status of Johnnie To is distinctive from contemporaries such as John Woo, Tsui Hark, and Wong Kar-wai. Solely committed to his national cinema, he made a point of never venturing to Hollywood and even formed his own production company, Milkyway Image, in 1996. Only in the mid-2000s when films like Breaking News (2005) and Election (2006) premiered at the Cannes Film Festival was Johnnie To given auteur consideration by Western critics and audiences. Even then, it was only his crime and action genre work, characterized by their elegant style and directorial control, that found critical success and was seen as commercially viable for international markets. With over 50 features under his belt, Johnnie To has a massive oeuvre not bound to any single mode and while he is one of contemporary cinema’s greatest formalist filmmakers, his fluency in visual storytelling transcends genre.
