very touching documentary
Goettschwan21 January 2019
I feel very much with the association and it is (to me) easy to understand why this is a heartfelt labor of love. The feeling of achievement must be strong, also in regards to the appreciation they got from the original involved. I hope to visit the place, I knew it existed but I also thought it was in the state before restoration... now it is very much worth the visit.

The only gripe with the documentary is the space they give Hetfield and Metallica, of course as a sponsor he will be interviewed but giving him seemingly more space as an individual than the people that were there, the people conscripted to build the cemetery and the original editors? I don't know.

For lovers of cinema and film makers and the art of movie making this is wonderful
fostrhod27 December 2018
If your a fan of movies, in particular Westerns, spaghetti Westerns , made by Sergio Leone and scored by Ennio Morricone and in particular "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" this homage to those wonderful movie makers and the fans who helped reclaim from the passage of time the Sad Hill Cemetery which had become overgrown in Almeria in Spain its location of filming over 50 years ago.

On watching the film you can't fail to get enthused by both the movie lovers in the documentary and also the desire to rewatch the Leone Spaghetti westerns.

Bizarrely what it does bring to mind is the love of cinema which is depicted in Guiseppe Tornatore's Cinema Paradiso from 1988 also scored by Morricone.

If you love the cinema and film makers watch this.

The good, the bad and the ... diggers
kosmasp17 May 2019
I have to admit, that since I just casually listen to Metallica and never attended a concert of theirs (my bad of course), I never realized how much they obviously love that Sergio Leone movie. But they are not alone with that love as this documentary shows. There are quite a lot of people out there and they summoned (or gathered) to find one of the films most iconic "set" (which of course was filmed on location in ... Spain).

Very engaging and at times also a behind the scenes to the movie itself, this documentary will give anyone who remotely loves the movie something to cheer on. Now not everyone could be there when they did something monumental. Something that took a lot of time and dedication. But they were rewarded - with this documentary and some choice words after completing the "task". As another reviewer stated - very touching indeed

Rediscover one of the greatest scenes in movie history.

Warning: Spoilers
First of all, I must admit I had no idea what Sad Hill was or what relevance it had to one of my favourite movies of all time. It was only by chance that I stumbled upon it by accident whilst browsing Netfix. However I'm glad I did. It's definitely a slow burner. It begins with Metallica live in concert. Now as most fans of both "The Good The Bad and the Ugly" and the rock giants will know, the group have used the scene entitled "The Ecstasy of Gold" for over 10 years now as their intro tape. However we will have to wait for that little scene. We back track to several years earlier, and follow two fans that have been looking for the original graveyard location that the famous scene took place at. Amazingly enough they spot from a hill the circular mounds that stand out in the rough terrain. It's an amazing moment as the two walk down the hill and walk past the false grave mounds that surround them. What is more astounding is that once they get to the centre of the circle, they discover that the original stones are still in place under the grass and soil that has covered the site since the filmmakers left. What follows is an interesting journey and pilgrimage that culminates in a fantastic celebration. I have seen passionate fans before, however this journey involves family history, a countries willingness to get involved in a project that frankly baffles me, and the lengths of outstanding detail that people are willing to go to. Superb stuff.

Ecstasy Of Gold Lives Forever......
wandernn1-81-6832746 September 2020
I'd never even heard of this before and I just happened to see it on Netflix. At least they realize that Good the Bad and the Ugly is the cinematic masterpiece of Westerns. What an amazing film. Brilliantly scored by Ennio Morricone, one of the greatest composers of all time.

And wow, all the effort that was put in by true fans of the film, and the art...to restore this cemetery. Amazing.

And the contributions by James Hetfield. Ennio Morricone. and then.... a word from 'God' haha, Clint Eastwood himself.

What an amazing accomplishment for the fans of Good , Bad , Ugly and of Leone, Morricone and Eastwood, Van Cleef, and Wallach.

Blimey, this was dull
vprice943 January 2019
It is because of my interest in cinematography - and of course The Good, The Bad and The Ugly - why I watched this documentary; and yet I found it to be totally unengaging. I have patience in abundance but I simply could not get comfortable viewing this picture. How on earth can a documentary be so devoid of enthusiasm and entertainment when it is detailing one of the most stirring film scenes ever captured on celluloid: The Ecstasy Of Gold.

So uplifting
jplatten2 December 2022
The effort, the passion - this is really so uplifting. I felt better after watching this film than for a long time just from the sheer joy and geekery of the film fans who made this happen. Great tale.

I took a star off for mild length and must admit I span through with fast forward like you do. Well it is a documentary not a narrative.

No real spoiler to say it contains a lot of facts about the original film and some of those were equally amazing and passion filled on the music, the film making and the scene setting. I'll have to seek out the good the bad and the ugly now and appreciate all those small details like its the first time over again.

A Sacred Tribute ! Warning: Spoilers
Desenterrando Sad Hill is one of the best documentations ever made of what passion for great art is all about, and it is a true testament of the admiration for the film maker Sergio Leone, very deservedly so. Alone, the story about the exhibition where the one and only poncho used by Clint 'the Man With No Name' Eastwood appeared to have become like a religious relic, says a lot, and it shows that taking on the hugh task that it obviously was to have this most iconic film location come back to life, is a sacred act, and in so many senses, and for so many, even for someone who didn't participate in the project. On top of it all, getting greetings and praise for the achievement from Ennio Morricone, Clint Eastwood themselves and others who made the film, makes it all a sacred tribute to probably the greatest western ever made.

ONLY DEDICATED FANS COULD MAKE THIS HAPPEN
larryanderson17 January 2023
Many fans of the movie THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY got together and spent their time clearing the site where the movie was originally filmed. They had to clear away 7 inches of dirt to reveal the center circle and put dirt on the graves to make them appear freshly dug. It looked like back breaking work but they managed to clear everything up and then film this great documentary. They made standees of the various characters from the movie so fans could take selfies with their heroes. Clint Eastwood made a short tribute clip which is shown in the movie. In order to raise money for the project, they "sold" name plates for each of the graves. Only TRUE Spaghetti Western fans would want their name displayed there. Someone should talk Mike Ferguson into getting his name on one of those crosses. If you like Spaghetti Westerns, you must see this Documentary. Larry Anderson.
