The End is Nigh: A review of a challenging and unforgiving platformer game
seruanyre20 January 2023
"The End is Nigh" is a challenging and unforgiving platformer game developed by Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel. The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where players take on the role of Ash, a small, black creature who is the last survivor of humanity. The game's objective is to navigate through various levels filled with obstacles, enemies, and deadly traps in order to reach the end of the world.

The game's art style is a mix of pixelated and hand-drawn elements, which creates a unique and disturbing atmosphere. The game's soundtrack is also noteworthy, it's tense and eerie, it really adds to the overall feeling of despair and hopelessness that the game is trying to convey.

The gameplay is challenging and requires quick reflexes and precise timing to navigate through levels. The game's difficulty level is high and players will die frequently, but the game's "checkpoints" system allows players to quickly respawn at the last checkpoint, which makes the game more accessible.

The game's levels are randomly generated, making each playthrough different, and the game's secrets and collectibles offer a lot of replayability. The game also has a built-in achievement system which adds a sense of progress and accomplishment to the game.

The game's story is also noteworthy, it's minimalistic and open-ended, it's left up to the player's interpretation. The game's narrative is conveyed through cryptic messages and symbols found throughout the levels.

Overall, "The End Is Nigh" is a challenging and unforgiving platformer game that offers a lot of replayability. The game's art style, soundtrack, and story create a unique and unsettling atmosphere. The game's difficulty level may be high, but the game's checkpoint system makes the game more accessible. The game is a must-have for fans of challenging platformers and players looking for a unique gaming experience.

Easily a masterpiece in the platforming genre that surpasses Super Meat Boy in all regards.

While the other review has some realistic points, it feels like a bunch of it is written by an AI or something. Literally none of this game is randomly generated, and every playthrough IS the same. I have no idea what that featured review is talking about, but it is 100% wrong in that regard.

Beginning the game you outright can discover there are multiple ways to clear through it, but no matter what you do (even if you clear the 1st level), you eventually have to discover the real pathways. You wind up with 2 options, either play the standard sequence of levels like you would in Super Meat Boy (occasionally having a branching path, but once again. NONE OF IT IS RANDOMLY GENERATED.), or seek out the hidden pathways and uncover the real final set of levels. (Just like SMB, go figure!)

The story is mostly told through various NPCs and stage design, no idea what the other reviewer is speaking about with symbols, because there aren't any. Just environmental details and obscure NPCs.

The soundtrack is NOT tense and eerie, its literally all classical pieces of music that are all redone...Seriously that other review sounds like a bunch of AI garbage.

The 'checkpoint' system is subjective based on if you're talking about the last set of stages or the ROM carts, as those DO NOT HAVE ANY.
