School of friendship
TheLittleSongbird30 August 2021
'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' generally did very well with its two part season openers, the weakest one of the previous seasons being Season 6's "The Crystalling", which was still above average, and the best for me being between Season 2's "The Return of Harmony" and Season 5's "The Cutie Map" which were both excellent. "School Daze" is Season 8's premiere and the first episode after the film (which to me was enjoyable) so hopes were high after liking the previous season while hoping it would be better than that season's finale.

It was and both parts, but especially the second part, make for a most promising and very good start to Season 8. The season itself was very uneven, with some bright spots, the worst episodes being as bad as the worst of Season 6 and a lot of episodes in between, but both parts of "School Daze" belong in the better group of it. Part 1 is set up, but it does a much better job than Season 7's season finale Part 1 ("Shadow Play") at setting things up without being too heavy in exposition or too complicated despite a lot going on.

"School Daze Part 1" has so much to recommend but has its faults. With a lot happening and being introduced there could have been more time to breathe as it did feel a touch rushed.

What would have solved it is if the episode did try to do a little bit less and focused on a smaller group of characters perhaps. While "School Daze Part 1" actually does very well with introducing the Student Six characters, Gallus is not as interesting as the rest of them and also has the personality that is the hardest to warm to, pessimism and apathy are not particularly warm-worthy traits.

However, so much works here. It is only their first episode, but already the Student Six characters have distinct personalities and traits that are mostly appealing and they are very interesting. The episode also does a great job making them individual from each other, with the standout characters being Yona (it would have been easy to overdo her pride and make her too much of a brute, but that is avoided) and Ocellus (really related to her shyness and how intelligent she was). Twilight is well developed here as well, it was great to see proactive here and it was interesting seeing her in a situation that stretched her. Chancellor Neighsay is entertaining and formidable, again the negative characteristics not being overdone. Great to see a different side to Equestria.

The animation is very colourful and polished throughout, especially towards the end when everything goes up into chaos and in the expressions and reactions. The music fits beautifully and never seemed at odds, "School of Friendship" (after a very song-light Season 7, apart from the terrible one in "Marks and Recreation") is catchy and uplifting. The writing is thoughtful and has a lot of heart and fun. The story is not perfect in pacing, but it never felt dull or bland. The voice acting from all is great, especially Tara Strong. It was great fun hearing Maurice LaMarche voice Neighsay and in the same voice he used for Brain (absolutely adore his voice work as that character) in 'Pinky and the Brain'.

Concluding, very promising start. 8/10.

It's great to be back!

This is the first episode to be aired since the 2017 movie and boy does it show! They actually have very nice allusions to that movie. Even though I myself wasn't a big fan of it, the fact that they make continuity so important shows how dedicated they are to the mythology. The most notable bits are the hippogriffs. It's weird how this works so much better as a TV show. Here we see a young yak, pony, hippogriff, dragon, changeling, and griffin meeting each other. What's great is how the lesson works.

It starts off by showing the lesson of how it's boring to do everything by the rules. The best part is probably how it seems ambiguous on its true message. At first, it seems to say that these kids don't like being together. It's then revealed they do, but they're still not that well off. I love how it tricks the audience into thinking there's a bigger conflict at the end. I recognized the Brain's voice as Chancellor Neighsay. ****

We went down with this

We came from excellent season 7 that in my opinion resurrected the series, had an incredible nice movie, and now this .... I said it before and will do it again, Hasbro's writers should REALLY stop looking for ways to make their job easier ( come with plots and stories to tell ), and start thinking how to make their job BETTER ( come up with better stories and plots ), first we had the map as a plot creator so the writers could come with easy stories, as I've said, it wasn't good, but wasn't bad either, some plots were actually good. Now, we went down into an absurd school that actually ignores all previous lore, having a school takes time, the mane six are adults, they had their lives, how in heaven do they get enough time to run a school and still keep their busy lives going ? Instead of making an immersive world that lives and surrounds us with good stories, they make a plain world that tells plain and singular stories. Instead of having actual live characters, we have dolls that adapt to the story, instead of the other way around, Oh Applejack is the principal worker in her farm and does a lot of the work to keep the place running ? She's a teacher now, bad luck for the rest of her family, oh, did Rarity has to work for 3 Boutiques ? upsi doo, she's a teacher now, so her dreams can go to hell. The characters are no real anymore, they've been reduced to plot convergences rather than actual characters. I had my hopes up with season 7 and the movie, I thought the series was getting better. I fear now that I was wrong, VERY wrong.

An awful episode - the show continues to be degraded

Michael Vogel, Josh Haber, Nicole Dubuc are some of the most despicable people in the animation industry. Shoving your political BS into a show about friendship for family audiences is sooooooo effing low. We all saw the leaked emails. We know what your motivations were. All terrible people.
