Jenny Lewis has never had trouble expressing herself. On Joy’All’s “Puppy and a Truck,” she sings, “My 40s are kicking my ass … and handing them to me in a margarita glass.” Even before she split with her indie-rock group Rilo Kiley a decade ago, she’d assumed a persona that’s one part Dusty Springfield, another part Linda Ronstadt, and one more of Mary Richards (shake gently and sprinkle in a dash of Gram Parsons to taste.) She has always sounded a little down on her luck, and...

When Fox’s “Monarch” premiered to strong ratings following an NFL game on Sept. 11, there was a big sort-of-maybe cliffhanger: Can the Susan Sarandon character, touted as a series lead, really be as dead as she appeared to be at the end of the pilot? But there were other questions, too. Like: Will this be a series in which the characters are portrayed as having originated a lot of the big hits of country and pop, from “Family Tradition” to “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” to “Born This Way”? Will the middle American audience be completely down with a story that has an out lesbian character vying to become a country superstar? Do parallels with Naomi Judd’s story feel as eerie as we think they do? And did the pilot make all those millions of viewers want to come back when there’s no NFL lead-in?

It’s been eight years since the Raconteurs came together for a live performance, and on Saturday night, as part of Third Man Records’ 10-year anniversary party, Jack White, Brendan Benson, Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler reunited to kick off their forthcoming LP, Help Us Stranger, with a tight set of songs new and old that show the foursome hasn’t rusted a bit in their time off. After a sweet introduction from White’s mother Teresa Gillis, the foursome launched into fan favorite “Consoler of the Lonely” — the same...

Roots musician Christian Lopez has previously displayed such influences in his original work from heartland rock to the synthesizer-driven tunes of the Cars. But Lopez’s acoustic version of John Prine’s “That’s the Way the World Goes Round” from the songwriter’s 1978 Bruised Orange LP, gives the West Virginia native an ideal spotlight for his intensely soulful, wise-beyond-his-24-years vocals.

A few lines and a guitar lick are all Justin Townes Earle needs on “Ain’t Got No Money,” the shifty roots rocker that will be featured on his just-announced LP The Saint of Lost Causes.
Something of a return to the familiar for Earle, The Saint of Lost Causes sees him reunited with longtime producer Adam Bednarik in Nashville after venturing out to Omaha, Nebraska, to record 2017’s Kids in the Streets with Mike Mogis of Bright Eyes. “Ain’t Got No Money” is lean and wiry, built around...

Ever since the Grammy solo vocal contests merged into co-ed categories in 2012, Chris Stapleton and Carrie Underwood have been king and queen of the country ball. Both have won Best Country Solo Performance twice — Underwood in 2013 and 2015, Stapleton in 2016 and 2018 — but only one of them is nominated in 2019.
Stapleton is primed to pull out in front and make it 3 for 3 with his third nod, for his Top 15 single “Millionaire.” A veteran songwriter, he’s already collected five Grammys, just three albums into his recording career. It’s easy to see why voters are so taken by him: In a sea of interchangeable country hunks, Stapleton has a distinctive vocal and physical presence.
“Millionaire” is three and a half minutes of gospel-infused middle-of-the-dirt-road country, but vocally, it’s not a particularly demanding ride. Compared to the undeniable acrobatics of “Either Way,” the Stapleton song that took this prize last year, the...

Jack White took my phone and locked it in a bag. To be fair, it was actually Yondr, a company that specializes in phone-free experiences, like White’s homecoming concert on Tuesday night at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. “Eventually country radio is going to get its shit together and play everyone,” Maren Morris told the crowd gathered yesterday at Cmt’s Next Women of Country showcase at Nashville’s City Winery. There to celebrate the 2019 class and accept the annual Impact Award presented by Natalie Hemby, Morris (part of the 2015 class) peppered that “eventually” with a certain kind of punch: maybe country radio will get its shit together, and maybe it won’t. Nashville’s most eclectic singer-songwriter returns with a trippy stunner full of swirling, immersive rock songs that evoke both the effervescence of the Sixties and the grit of today. But while Aaron Lee Tasjan, as mesmerizing a guitar player as he is a songwriter, nods heavily to the Beatles on Karma for Cheap, he isn’t aping them.
Instead, on tracks like “If Not Now When” and “The Truth Is So Hard to Believe,” he marries Fab Four harmonies to his own sick licks, making for a beguilingly complex listen.

Kacey Musgraves made a big impact with her major label debut album “Same Trailer Different Park,” which set her apart from her country-music contemporaries with lyrics questioning religion and small town life, embracing the Lgbt community, and occasionally extolling the pleasures of marijuana. But while she has always been lyrically progressive, she has always balanced that with a quieter, contemplative sound. Now comes her fourth major-label album — and third non-holiday album — “Golden Hour,” which was released on March 30, which marks a significant sonic departure for the singer-songwriter, blending her usual country-pop with disco and electronic influences.
As of this writing “Golden Hour” has earned raves from critics, receiving a score of 92 on MetaCritic based on six reviews.
