The Air Force did scramble their fastest jets to attack the "unknown objects" which were as shown no capable of keeping up with the aerial acrobatics of the "flying objects" in maneuvers or their rate of speed. This was reported in 1952 in all the press at the time. One of the last times that the press freely could publish the sightings.
This case of "Washington DC Sighting" , is actually the beginning of "don't ask, don't tell" era with respect to public release of information about UFO's. Up to this point pilots spoke freely, as did any person having witnessed a sighting, as well as the press reporting on such events. The period after the 1952 encounter, also marks the actual use of the designation "Project Blue Book'", as the term had not been in use before.
Hynek's explanation of temperature inversions:
"They occur when a layer of warm, moist air in the upper atmosphere covers a layer of cool, dry air closer to the ground. This condition can cause radar signals to bend and give off false returns."

Out in front of the Washington Monument when the second sightings were reported, there are two college students throwing a frisbee, this is not correct in the timeline, Frisbee were first mass produced in 1957 by Wham-O and before that they were called Pluto Platters, they were not readily available so the students are using a red disc that looks like a Frisbee or just a foreshadowing device for the audience.
