"It Was Real!!!"

Warning: Spoilers
The time is September 12, 1952. The place is Flatwoods, West Virginia. Youngsters named Fred and Ed May, along with Tommy Hyer, have witnessed the crash of a spaceship with a pulsing light and face-to-face confrontation with 12-foot "green monster" that appeared to be attempting to communicate with them. Kathleen May, the mother of the May boys, makes a cursory investigation and supports her kids' version of the event. In this program, the names have been changed. But the task of Dr. Hynek is to assess the credibility of the story of the Flatwoods Monster.

The children have suffered burns around their eyes, perhaps from the scorched spacecraft and its "ragin' red diamond engine." Dr. Hynek attributes the burns to arsenic fumes and radiation effects. But the red marks will be only temporary, and the children will not suffer permanent damage.

The skeptical captain wants to attribute the story to a meteor crash, and Dr. Hynek tests the hypothesis that a great horned was what the children saw. Still, his doubts are fueled by another eyewitness named Evelyn, a woman in a rest home, who corroborates the description of the monster given by the children. There is also a nefarious man in a hat, who has provided a photograph of the same hieroglyph and numerical code discovered by Dr. Hynek from the previous case. Evelyn tumbles to her death out of the asylum. Was it suicide, or was it murder?

In the subplot of the episode, Mrs. Mimi Hynek has been duped by her new friend Susie, who is a Soviet spy, working in tandem with a partner who searches the Hynek home and removes an item from Dr. Hynek's desk at a time when Mimi and Susie were visiting a den of iniquity for a higball called a "coffin nail."

Evelyn confided in Dr. Hynek that what she witnessed was a foretaste of "the end of all things." And the children stand by their story of the monster that "it was real!" But Generals Harding and Valentine, who are in charge of Project Blue Book, wish to use Dr. Hynek as a safeguard to give credence to the explanation given to the public as a meteor crash. Unbeknownst to Dr. Hynek, the generals are hiding from view the extensive remains of a spacecraft.
