The Blue Angels happens to be a pretty cool title for a movie title. You are not at fault if you expect it to be some sort of thrilling thing. Well, “Blue Angels” is what the United States Navy flight demonstration squadron is popularly known as. In popular culture, it is, of course, the Top Gun films that have introduced us to them. Interestingly, Glen Powell, who rose to fame thanks to Top Gun: Maverick (2022), is one of the producers of the latest The Blue Angels movie. Powell also starred in another Blue Angels-inspired movie, Devotion (2023), following his Top Gun success. The Blue Angels is a documentary, though, about the real thing. Now I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, but The Blue Angels turns out to be somewhat underwhelming—just saying.

After producing the upcoming documentary “The Blue Angels,” J.J. Abrams and Glen Powell are in early talks to team up for a new movie, with Abrams eyeing Powell to star in his next directorial effort.
Deals have yet to close, but in the aftermath of “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Anyone but You,” no one’s career has been hotter than Powell’s, who continues to garner interest from big-name filmmakers and studios.
There’s no telling when this project would fit into Powell’s jam-packed production schedule. He’ll next be seen starring in Netflix’s “Hit Man,” which he also co-wrote with director Richard Linklater, but he’s also set to star in Edgar Wright’s “The Running Man” reboot for Paramount. That news was revealed at CinemaCon, where the actor also promoted Universal’s “Twisters” as a prospective summer blockbuster. Also in the works is “Chad Powers,” a...

Dneg, the London-headquartered visual effects and animation house that has won Oscars for the likes of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune and Christopher Nolan’s Tenet and has also worked on The Last of Us and season 4 of Stranger Things, among others – unveiled the launch of a new unit dubbed Dneg 360, which is operated by real-time production firm Dimension Studio.
The partners also unveiled what they described as “two of the world’s largest LED volume stages” in London and Rome.
Dneg and Dimension initially struck a joint venture deal in 2021 to partner on virtual production services. Dneg 360 expands on the partnership to also include visualization, content creation, and development services.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Anyone But You (Will Gluck)
If anything, Anyone But You‘s spirit is encapsulated in having a running joke about “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield (gags involving that artist’s back catalog seeming to be the Will Gluck auteurist touch) as if the movie’s wholly bland pop soundtrack puts it above that at-least-memorable 2000s ditty. Slight self-awareness with no effort to actually do anything new is the definition of unearned arrogance. This is why it fails as a romcom: too much smarm and not enough charm. – Ethan V. (full review)
Where to Stream: Netflix
Garrett Bradley: Devotion
If you’ve only seen Garrett Bradley’s staggering, Oscar-nominated documentary Time, it’s prime time to catch up on a pair of her earlier work.

The ultra-charming and very handsome actor Glen Powell is having quite a run right now, but my dude is far from an overnight success. His first role was as "Long-fingered Boy" in Robert Rodriguez's "Spy Kids 3" more than 20 years ago, and since then, he's been steadily building his way to stardom. Small roles in "The Great Debaters," "The Dark Knight Rises," and "The Expendables 3" laid the groundwork for his star-making, charisma-filled performance in 2016's "Everybody Wants Some!!" In 2018, he helped resurrect the rom-com with the one-two punch of Netflix films "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" (a delightful and underrated gem) and the more popular "Set It Up" opposite Zoey Deutch, which launched him to Internet Boyfriend status.

There was a marked tonal downshift between Nia Archives’s kinetic 2022 EP Forbidden Feelingz and its comparatively ruminative follow-up, Sunrise Bang Ur Head Against Tha Wall. The British singer and jungle producer’s first full-length release, Silence Is Loud, balances these varied tempos, though it’s still rhythmically driving throughout. Where Sunrise’s modified pacing and gentler tone opened up space for the music to turn inward, the new album mostly pushes forward in a way that jettisons its capacity for introspection.
The result is that Archives’s reflections sometimes want for passion. On “Nightmares,” she details her exasperation with a former lover as though she’s reading lines rather than bearing it all. And when Archives recounts her partner’s adequacies or shares her personal struggles, the observations are genuine but often make for inelegant scaffolding. “Blind Devotion,” for one, ends abruptly before the two-minute mark, while “Crowded Roomz...

Jack O’Connell may be about to be seen on screen in the Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black,” but the actor has also stepped behind the camera to shoot a video for another U.K. music icon, Paul Weller.
The Brit — who stars as Winehouse’s ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil in Sam Taylor-Johnson’s feature alongside Marisa Abela as the late, legendary singer — has made his directorial debut with the music video for “Nothing,” a track set to be part of Weller’s new album “66,” releasing in May.
“It was a good stroke of fortune,” O’Connell tells Variety. “Paul’s been a mate for a while and he’s got a bunch of new music coming out. He asked me to be in [a video] and I said, ‘Can I direct it instead?’ He obliged. And now we’ve edited it and cut it together.”

“Anyone But You” star Glen Powell says his upcoming film “Twisters” is “definitely not a reboot.”
The upcoming sequel leans more toward an update of the original version with a brand new plot. Powell, who has racked up roles in rom-coms (“Set It Up”) and action films like “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Devotion” will lead the Universal movie alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones. Though production on the disaster epic paused due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes in 2023, the film remains on track for its 2024 release date.
“We just wrapped it a couple nights ago. It’s definitely not a reboot. We’re not trying to recreate the story from the first one. It’s a completely original story,” Powell told Vogue for a profile piece. “There are no characters from the original movie back, so it’s not really a continuation. It’s just its own standalone story in the modern-day.

Loki Season 1 Director Once Called Jonathan Majors A Chameleon For His Versatile Acting Talent ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Jonathan Majors’ MCU future comes to an end after getting fired for being guilty in the assault and harassment case. However, there is no denying that he is a promising talent in Hollywood; even Loki Season 1 director Kate Herron said that while working with Majors. Heron called Majors a chameleon for his ability to get into a character, complimenting his talent.

Jonathan Majors is out at Marvel Studios in a stunning career blow for the once-rising actor.
On Dec. 18, a Manhattan jury found Majors guilty of reckless assault in the third degree and guilty of harassment following a two-week trial that stemmed from a March incident between the actor and his ex-partner, Grace Jabbari.
Before his March arrest, Majors was positioned as the key figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the Disney-owned studio building its entire current story arc around Majors’ Kang the Conqueror. The time-traveling villain factored into this year’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania as well as both seasons of Loki, and he was going to lead Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, slated for May 1, 2026. The feature is still in the script phase and had not begun filming. No director is currently attached.

It was a bit of a mixed bag during Thanksgiving at the box office. "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" unexpectedly topped the charts for a second weekend, while Ridley Scott's "Napoleon" did better than expected. Meanwhile, Disney's latest original animated feature, "Wish," fell well short of expectations. Setting that aside, the holiday frame gave the industry at large reason to be optimistic as this year's Thanksgiving box office bounty was far bigger overall than it was in 2022.
In 2022, "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" topped the charts with $45.5 million over Thanksgiving weekend, earning a whopping $63.8 million across the full five-day Wednesday to Sunday stretch despite being in its third weekend. The problem is that most of the other releases in theaters that weekend didn't do all that well, with movies like "Devotion" and "Bones and All" left to fight for relative scraps. Michael Mann’s “three decades of research” provided the key to putting audiences in the driver’s seat of vintage Ferraris racing down a thousand miles of Italian roads that are well known for taking human lives.
That’s what “Ferrari” cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt discovered when he teamed with the director of crime classics such as “Heat” and TV’s “Miami Vice” to tell the story of Enzo Ferrari, founder of Italy’s most iconic racing car company, played by Adam Driver.
“I asked him what I should look at and Michael said, ‘Why don’t you start with my library.’”
Messerschmidt, himself known for exacting work on such films as “Citizen Kane” backstory “Mank,” which won him an Oscar, learned that Mann had indeed been researching Ferrari for 30 years. The director had accumulated hundreds of books, photos, newsreels, clippings and letters documenting every aspect of Ferrari’s life, the early days of auto racing,...

Jonathan Majors may have just gotten a break as far as his reputation goes, as Grace Jabbari – the woman who accused him of assault and harassment back in March – was arrested for “suspicion of misdemeanor assault and misdemeanor criminal mischief”, according to The New York Times.
Grace Jabbari’s arrest was a result of a counterclaim from Jonathan Majors, who alleged that she was actually the one who assaulted him. However, Jabbari was not prosecuted and was released. She will, however, have to appear in court at a later date. Despite no prosecution, one does wonder how the public perception of Majors may change. It wouldn’t be much of a surprise if there is indeed a shift; just as many declared Majors guilty immediately after his arrest – his talent agency dropped him the month after – there will most certainly be people that point to Jabbari’s arrest and pin her as the guilty one.

Cord Jefferson’s comedy, “American Fiction,” has won the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature at the 2023 Middleburg Film Festival. Since winning the same prize at the Toronto International Film Festival, the film has been steadily rising in our combined Best Picture odds, where it’s currently in ninth place as a predicted nominee. Jefferson also received the award for Special Achievement in Filmmaking for his debut feature.
The top documentary prize went to Vanessa Hope‘s “Invisible Nation,” which follows the election and subsequent administration of Taiwan’s first female president, Dr. Tsai Ing-wen. The top award for international filmmaking went to the J.A. Bayona film “Society of the Snow,” about the 29 survivors Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which crashed in the Andes in 1972, and the extreme measures they had to take to stay alive while they were trapped.

Cord Jefferson’s satirical comedy “American Fiction” has won the Audience Award for narrative film at the Middleburg Film Festival. Proving to be a true crowd-pleaser, it’s the third audience prize for the MGM title on the festival circuit following the Toronto and Mill Valley Film Festivals (at the latter it tied with “Rustin”).
Based on the novel “Erasure” by Percival Everett, the film follows author Thelonious “Monk” Ellison (Jeffrey Wright), a frustrated novelist who is fed up with the establishment profiting from “Black” entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. The film also stars Sterling K. Brown, Erika Alexander, Issa Rae, Tracee Ellis Ross, Leslie Uggams and John Ortiz.
With SAG-AFTRA still on strike, it’s been writer, director and producer Jefferson doing the promotional and festival rounds for the movie, with the Oscar buzz continuing to grow in these early days of the season.

Portraying Parker Caine in the first two seasons of Charmed was the charm Nick Hargrove needed in his career. Growing up in Philly, Hargrove exhibited a passion for making impressions and imitating accents and dialects. This fascination also sparked an interest in storytelling. Hargrove would often entertain his family and aspired to become a child actor but that never happened. Nick Hargrove was already a college graduate when he made his acting debut which required him to move to Los Angeles. He has since appeared in many projects, including The Wrong Mother, Medal of Honor, Counterpart, and Devotion. Aside from...

Compared to other war films, Devotion is in a league of its own with the true meaning of the title unveiling as the story progresses. Directed by J. D. Dillard and written by Jake Crane and Jonathan Stewart, the film is an adaptation of Adam Makos‘ 2015 book Devotion: An Epic Story of Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice. It tells the story of Jesse Brown (Jonathan Majors), the first Black aviator in the U.S. Navy’s flight training program, and his service to humanity alongside Tom Hudner (Glen Powell) during the Korean War. Every year, the fall film festival season (try saying that five times fast) brings all sorts of discussion points to those who of us who are way too plugged into such things, from Academy Awards buzz for certain performances and movies to potentially controversial subject matter on the horizon and everything in between. But, ideally, these sorts of early screenings also help put certain kinds of movies on the radar for a wider range of audiences, shining a spotlight on titles that many might not have even heard of before. And, in some cases, a wave of overwhelmingly positive critic reactions and reviews can play a big role in helping them land distribution partners at a pretty penny.
Such appears to be the case with "Hit Man," the latest movie by acclaimed filmmaker Richard Linklater. Upon debuting at this year's Venice Film Festival and swiftly building up even more hype...

“Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour” is already on track to be among the biggest theatrical titles for the rest of 2023 — and that’s already ruffling some Hollywood feathers.
With box office analysts already projecting a possible $100 million-plus opening, the filmed concert documentary is exactly what theaters ordered to maintain momentum following a “Barbenheimer”-fueled summer movie season. The big surprise is that the film, produced with a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement, will be released directly via AMC and participating theaters, with no studio involvement.
“It’s scary that Taylor Swift can come in and become a hit without using conventional marketing routes,” Bruce Nash, founder and publisher of box-office data site The Numbers, told TheWrap.
Adding to the unsettling feeling is the fact that legacy studios made a play for the concert film, only to get rebuffed, which might explain the sour grapes.

Glen Powell teamed up with his “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Devotion” co-stars on Wednesday as they hit the picket lines outside Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California in support of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.
Powell, 34, shared some photos from his march, including a group shot featuring “Maverick” co-stars Tarzan Davis, Monica Barbaro, Danny Ramirez, and Lewis Pullman, as well as his “Devotion” cast mates Spencer Neville and Nick Hargrove.

Track by Track is a recurring feature series in which artists guide readers through every song on their latest release. Today, Margaret Glaspy takes us through her latest record, Echo the Diamond.
Today, songwriter Margaret Glaspy returns with her third full-length record, Echo the Diamond. Expanding upon the the sound and themes of her previous effort, Devotion, Echo the Diamond finds Glaspy trusting her instincts and imbuing the batch of songs with a newfound rawness and grit.
With many of the tracks incorporating the musicians’ first takes, Glaspy’s songwriting has never felt so immediate or urgent. Over blues-injected, contemplative tunes, she attempts put indescribable emotions into words — and, as she’ll admit, sometimes even she doesn’t fully understand all of the complex nuances explored in her work.
“[It] holds some mysterious qualities that I don’t quite understand yet,” she tells Consequence of the song “I Didn’t Think So.

Anthony Mackie has weighed in on the recent domestic assault charges against fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe actor Jonathan Majors, stressing that guilt has not yet been proven.
“We’re a country that was built on ‘everyone is innocent until proven guilty,’” the “Twisted Metal” star told Inverse in an interview on Wednesday. “That’s one of the staples of this country. Nothing has been proven about this dude. Nothing. So everyone is innocent until proven guilty. That’s all I can say. It’s crazy where we are as a society. But as a country, everyone is innocent until proven guilty.”
On March 25, Majors, who played Kang the Conqueror in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and is poised to be Marvel’s main villain over the next several films, was arrested in the Manhattan neighborhood of Chelsea on assault, strangulation and harassment charges in connection to a domestic dispute involving a 30-year-old woman.

On first listen, the second album from London singer-songwriter Arlo Parks sounds like something to luxuriate in; Parks sings and lays down poetry over plush textures and simmering beats. But a closer listen reveals that these pillowy structures are, in fact, cushions against the blows of modern life—bulwarks that keep Parks’ self, the “soft machine” referenced in the album title, moving without cutting herself off or suffering too much long-term damage.

Sarah Snook is pregnant in real life — and in HBO’s “Succession” — but in “Run Rabbit Run,” she plays a mother and fertility doctor who is frightened by her young daughter’s inexplicable memories of a past identity.
The Australian thriller from director Daina Reid and writer Hannah Kent released its first trailer as the film is confirmed to screen at next month’s Sydney Film Festival. “Run Rabbit Run” made its world premiere as the opening title of the Midnight section of the Sundance festival in January. The film will launch on Netflix on June 28.
Emmy-nominated Snook stars alongside Damon Herriman and Greta Scacchi. Variety’s review from Sundance called the film an “effective if familiar mommy-issues chiller.”

Following a premiere at Sundance 2023, where Netflix picked up the psychological horror film for an undisclosed sum, the streaming service has set a June 28 release date and unveiled the first trailer for "Run Rabbit Run." With Sarah Snook ("Succession") in the lead, Australian director Daina Reid's second feature film is about a single mother and fertility doctor named Sarah (Snook) who is shaken by her 7-year-old daughter Mia's (Lily Latorre) strange behavior and "inexplicable memories of a past identity."
The connection, as the "Run Rabbit Run" trailer reveals, is Sarah's late sister Alice who had an interest in wild rabbits and went missing when she was just seven years old. Jonathan Majors appeared in a lower Manhattan court on Tuesday morning via Zoom regarding the status of his ongoing assault case.
In the brief conference, which was automatically set six weeks ago after his initial court appearance, Judge Rachel S. Pauley discussed a motion filed by Majors’ defense team that the prosecution has until May 23 to respond. The defense will have until May 31 to respond back. Majors needs to appear in court on June 13, when a decision will be made regarding that motion. If he fails to show up in person, a warrant can be issued for his arrest within 48 hours, the judge added.
“I obviously don’t want that to happen, so just stay in touch with your attorney,” the judge told Majors.

A judge has granted a full temporary order of protection for the woman involved in the case against Jonathan Majors stemming from an alleged domestic dispute.
The order, which was requested by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, was granted with the consent of defense counsel, Da press secretary Doug Cohen told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement Thursday. A limited temporary order of protection had been granted during Majors’ March arraignment. The actor, who has denied any wrongdoing, is slated to appear in court May 9.
In response, Majors’ criminal defense lawyer, Priya Chaudhry, called the judge’s move “standard in cases such as this, and we consented because Mr. Majors wants nothing to do with the woman who assaulted him.”

What goes up, must come down – it just usually doesn’t happen this quickly. Jonathan Majors has become one of the most recognizable names and faces of Hollywood over the last several years, appearing in projects such as Devotion, The Harder They Fall, Creed III, and of course his villainous role of Kang the Conqueror in the MCU. Add the fact that Majors was an Emmy nominee for his role in the HBO series Lovecraft County in 2020, and it isn’t hard to see how the young actor has taken over the industry in such a short amount of time. Unfortunately, as quickly as Majors has risen to fame, it seems his fall may be just as fast.

James Cameron climbs the ladder to cut the net for winning Deadline’s 2022 Most Valuable Blockbuster Movie Tournament after Avatar: The Way of Water cleared over a half-billion dollars in profit after all ancillaries.
Given the sleeper nature of this sequel, and given the overall boom expected from this year’s global box office to $32 billion ( up 24% from 2022), if there’s a takeaway on theatrical’s track record moving forward, it’s that more premium theaters — like Plf, 4Dx and Screen X — are needed. Those are the formats that made Avatar: The Way of Water a success, and by which moviegoers scheduled their viewing. If the motion picture industry wants to continue making moviegoing a better option than in-home viewing, it’s not just with product but also with the cinematic experience.
