A BIT NASTY....!

I admire Julie Walters as an actress and have enjoyed her various roles over the years immensely but was very surprised and annoyed with her bitchy quip against Michael Portillo. She asked "has Michael Portillo been on this train", to which the guard said I don't think so and she snapped back "I can smell Lynx"! Lynx being a cheap, overpowering, dreadful smelling deodorant, I assume Walters thinks little of the endlessly fascinating, quirky, charming gentleman responsible for the hit series Great British Rail Journeys.

I suppose it shows that Walters is a nasty old hag who shouldn't be given a platform for her bitter quips.

It's a shame she slid into the gutter for a laugh or is this who she is.

Not necessary!

She's a treasure

Really fun! She has a cheeky, flirty nature and a love of the quirky that shines through. More about characters along the way than trains. I actually came for trains but stayed for her!

Yet another celebrity blocking the view

This isn't really a programme about Coastal Railways. It's a programme about Julie Walters.

This isn't necessarily a pop at Julie, who seems lovely, but every time you want to see the railway journey, you have to swerve to look around Julie.

In this she follows a long, long, line of celebrity-obsessed television productions. As if the world somehow revolved around the 0.1% of that demographic and as if they are the arbiters of anything and everything that's interesting about places.

These railways are fantastic. It would be even better if the 'me, me, me' brigade just stepped aside for a bit and allowed the rest of us to see them, in all its glory. Without someone's fizzog in the way.

For an example of how to do it, see the brilliant Channel 5 series 'World's Most Scenic Railway Journeys'. The clue to their success? Bill Nighy the narrator never once appears on our screens. Bravo.
