After composing the score for the King of Rock & Roll documentary Elvis Presley: The Searcher in 2018, Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready has directed his attention to the Man in Black, reuniting with director Thom Zimny to create the soundtrack for The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash. A new doc about the mercurial country singer, the YouTube Originals production (premiering November 11th) looks at Cash’s tortured past — the accidental death of his older brother; his own damaging affair with drugs — and subsequent redemption through spirituality and his marriage to June Carter.

“It was two guys hanging out in a kitchen making a movie,” says Thom Zimny. The two guys in question happened to be Bruce Springsteen and Zimny himself: They co-directed the new movie Western Stars, which captures powerful live performances of Springsteen’s latest album in its entirety, along with pensive desert scenes overlaid with Springsteen’s confessional voiceovers. Zimny, who has been making Springsteen documentaries and concert films as part of Springsteen’s team since the 2001 HBO special Live in New York City (and also recently made The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash...

Fifty-one years ago, Johnny Cash was emerging from one of the lowest ebbs in his personal life and in his already-legendary career in country music. With the electrifying live album Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison and a groundbreaking network TV series on the horizon, Cash was on his way to becoming an American icon. On November 11th, YouTube Originals will premiere the documentary film The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash, a searing portrait of the Man in Black, whose personal character and bold artistry were shaped by deep spirituality and unshakable tragedy.

The 8,750-feet-elevation hills were alive with the sound of music at the Telluride Film Festival. When it came to tuneage, it was as if Telluride almost wanted to give the heavily music-focused South by Southwest Film Festival a run for its mellifluous money this year.
The 46th annual gathering of the cineastes kicked off with Renee Zellweger singing nearly a full concert’s worth of material, and well, as part of her Judy Garland biopic, “Judy”; offered the Weeknd playing himself, briefly but hilariously, in a crime drama, “Uncut Gems”; gave the world multiple versions of a strong new Thom Yorke song, with Edward Norton’s noir-ish “Motherless Brooklyn” as the jazzy delivery system; and unveiled a slate of fall music documentaries on Billie Holiday, Linda Ronstadt, Johnny Cash and “Country Music” itself.
And, oh yes, there was another music doc not quite so fresh out of the editing bay:...

Director Thom Zimny found a treasure trove of exclusive audio for The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash.
Johnny Cash didn't sound like anyone else in music. His battered baritone and rhythmic guitar strum mixed Nashville country with the honesty of folk rock that rolled. Cash started in the same studio, Sun, as Elvis Presley, and was part of a magical session with him, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins. Thom Zimny's documentary The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash fills in the reality behind the myth. And it does it with an authentic voice. Cash narrates his own oral history through footage from interviews which were never released.
Thom Zimny, who spoke with Den of Geek at SXSW 2019, says when he was approached to do the film he was already a huge fan: "I knew the narrative had been explored in books and feature films.

Earlier this year, Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready completed the music for a new documentary, The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash, which premiered this week at South by Southwest. The movie, directed by Thom Zimny (Elvis Presley: The Searcher), uses archival footage and interviews with Cash’s family and friends and attempts to add color to the story of the Man in Black. It also proved to be a transformative experience for McCready.

Thom Zimny gives Johnny Cash the same thoughtful exploration he provided for Elvis and Springsteen in his latest music-focused doc.
The title of Thom Zimny’s new Johnny Cash documentary, The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash, is a reference to something Cash’s mother said to him after hearing him sing as a boy. “God has his hand on you,” she said, “don’t ever forget the gift.” In that one quote, Cash’s mother sums up the two driving forces of Cash’s life, God, the search for spirituality despite the darkness that surrounds and occasionally envelops us all, and that famous baritone voice, that was both able to inhabit a wide-range of American personas and experiences while championing the underdogs of our society.
Though mostly a cut-and-dry chronological look at The Man in Black’s life, The Gift uses Cash’s iconic 1968 Folsom Prison concert as an anchor.

There have been any number of movies about Johnny Cash, from documentaries like “My Father and the Man in Black” to glorified concert films like “Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison” and an Oscar-winning biopic, “Walk the Line,” but none have expressed the singular power of his solemn voice better than “The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash.” A womb-to-tomb oral history that was made with the full support and participation of the late singer’s family (and sometimes feels too close to its subject as a result), the film makes sure that nothing supercedes or waters down the humbled, biblical tenor that always made it sound as though Cash was steeling us for the darkness to come.
