Exclusive: Former Scandal star Bellamy Young is set as a lead opposite Michael Sheen in Prodigal Son, Fox’s police drama pilot from Deception creator Chris Fedak and Sam Sklaver, Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros TV.
Written by Feder and Sklaver and directed by Lee Toland Krieger, Prodigal Son is described as a fresh take on a crime franchise with a provocative and outrageous lead character and darkly comedic tone. It centers on Malcolm Bright, who has a gift. He knows how killers think, how their minds work. Why? His father Martin Whitly (Sheen) was one of the worst — a notorious serial killer called “The Surgeon.” That’s why Bright is the best criminal psychologist around; murder is the family business. He will use his twisted genius to help the NYPD solve crimes and stop killers, all while dealing with a manipulative mother, annoyingly normal sister, a homicidal father still...

ABC has opted not to proceed with comedic drama pilot False Profits. I hear the project starring Bellamy Young and Vanessa Williams is being shopped by ABC Studios to other outlets.
False Profits was among ABC’s buzzy hourlong pilots last season. It narrowly missed the cut for a series order but remained in priority development for midseason consideration. The network in May authorized the opening of a writers room to generate three additional scripts, and ABC Studios also extending the cast of the pilot.
“I just received a new script on False Profits; we’ll see where we go on that,” ABC’s President of Entertainment Channing Dungey told Deadline in August.
Written by former Code Black writer-producer Kayla Alpert, False Profits is described as Desperate Housewives meets Glengarry Glen Ross. It follows a team of down-and-out women in suburban Arizona as they fight their way to the top...

Scandal concluded after seven seasons earlier this year, but two of its most popular stars will be staging a reunion of sorts on in 2019.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bellamy Young will appear on one episode of Whiskey Cavalier, a brand new drama which stars her former Scandal co-star Scott Foley.
The series is described as a “high-octane, hour-long action dramedy that follows the adventures of tough but tender FBI super-agent Will Chase (codename: ‘Whiskey Cavalier’), played by Foley."
"Following an emotional breakup, Chase is assigned to work with badass CIA operative Francesca ‘Frankie’ Trowbridge (codename: ‘Fiery Tribune’), played by Lauren Cohan."

"Together, they lead an inter-agency team of flawed, funny and heroic spies who periodically save the world (and each other) while navigating the rocky roads of friendship, romance and office politics.”

Gladiators, rejoice!
ABC's midseason thriller Whiskey Cavalier will be reuniting Scandal stars Scott Foley and Bellamy Young.
The hourlong action dramedy stars Foley as FBI agent Will Chase, who is assigned to work with a badass CIA operative named Frankie (Walking Dead star Lauren Cohan). Young will appear in one episode as Karen Pappas, the gorgeous widow of a nefarious Greek shipping magnate who dazzles Will, promising romance, espionage and more.
Young still has the ABC drama False Profits in the works. The pilot did not make the series pickup cut in May, but executives opted instead to redevelop the project ...

ABC, coming off the highs and lows of the extraordinary ratings success of the Roseanne revival and the turmoil after its abrupt cancellation, is heading into next season with four new comedy series: the Roseanne spinoff The Conners, two more family comedies, The Kids Are Alright and Single Parents, and one more spinoff, The Goldbergs sequel Schooled; as well as five dramas, ensemble A Million Little Things, soap Grand Hotel, legal drama The Fix and light procedurals The Rookie and Whiskey Cavalier.
But as the broadcast networks are gearing up for fall 2018 launch, they are also looking ahead as they begin to buy pitches for the 2019-20 season.
In an interview with Deadline during TCA, ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey talks about the network’s development targets in drama and comedy and gives a status update on The Middle spinoff and two pilots from last season, which were kept alive for redevelopment,...

ABC’s last-minute pickup of Roseanne last spring shook up the network’s comedy pilot field, leading to fewer new series orders than initially projected — The Mayor, which landed on the fall schedule, and Splitting Up Together and Alex, Inc., which were held for midseason.
This time around, the surprise cancellation of Roseanne a couple of weeks after ABC unveiled its 2018-2018 schedule could have the opposite effect, possibly giving a comedy pilot that did not make the cut to series a second chance.
ABC executives reportedly spent the day today in scheduling meetings discussing various scenarios for its Tuesday fall lineup without the 8 Pm anchor (and the network’s highest-rated series), Roseanne.
I hear among the possibilities in consideration for filling in the hole is bringing in The Goldbergs spinoff series, Schooled, the only comedy series ABC has on the bench for midseason, for a fall launch. Additionally, I...

NBC this year picked five drama pilots to series, New Amsterdam, Manifest, The Village, The Enemy Within and The InBetween, and two comedy pilots to series, multi-cam Abby’s and single-cam I Feel Bad. The network’s surprise passes included Bad Boys offshoot drama L.A.’s Finest starring Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba.
When the dust started to settle on Friday afternoon following the flurry of pickups and passes, word got around that NBC was leaving one comedy pilot alive. Than at 9 Pm that night, the network announced that it was picking up a sixth season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine following its cancellation by Fox the previous day. That created confusion whether that potential last comedy slot went to the cop comedy starring Andy Samberg.
I hear that is not the case, and that the last NBC pilot standing is single-camera Bright Futures. I hear the network brass plan to...

When the dust settled on ABC’s new drama series today, all of ABC’s buzzy hourlong pilots had been picked up to series with the exception of False Profits.
I hear that the comedic soap, from ABC Studios, is very much alive and remains in priority development. I hear the project is opening a writers room to generate three additional scripts and the cast of the pilot — led by Bellamy Young and Vanessa Williams, who I hear both tested very well — are being extended. False Profits would be in consideration for a midseason pickup.
Meanwhile, all other ABC drama — as well as comedy — pilots that did not get orders yesterday and today are dead.
Written by former Code Black writer-producer Kayla Alpert, False Profits is described as Desperate Housewives meets Glengarry Glen Ross. It follows a team of down-and-out women in suburban Arizona as they fight their way to...

As NBC just kicked off pilot-to-series pickups this afternoon with medical drama New Amsterdam, here is the final installment of Deadline’s annual feature that tracks buzz on broadcast pilots. With networks wrapping up pilot screenings, their executives will have the weekend to mull over their choices before the wave of series pickups next week.
Every year there are late pilot-season surprises that shake up the field. Fox’s bid to resurrect former ABC comedy series Last Man Standing starring Tim Allen is one such twist. The growing momentum to get the multi-camera sitcom on the air next season has helped a seemingly dormant pilot, the off-cycle multi-camera Cool Kids, from the It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia team. The retirement-home comedy largely had kept a low profile despite solid testing and screenings. But it is considered a very suitable companion to Last Man Standing, which makes it a strong contender.

As we enter the pilot screenings phase of pilot season, here is the latest installment of Deadline’s Pilot Panic 2018, which tracks buzz on broadcast pilots. While we are only two weeks away from the upfronts, information is still incomplete, with a number of high-profile pilots, like ABC’s Whiskey Cavalier, yet to be delivered. Here are some of the pilots that are making noise at the moment.
ABC’s Nathan Fillion starrer The Rookie, which has a straight-to-series order, DJ Nash ensemble A Million Little Things, and the Eva Longoria-produced Grand Hotel, toplined by Demian Bichir and Roselyn Sanchez, continue to garner strong buzz, joined by suburban drama False Profits starring Bellamy Young and Vanessa Williams. Beyond that things are murky. With rookie cop drama-comedy The Rookie looking assured of a slot of the schedule, the competition among the slew of other law & order pilots ordered by the network this year increases.

It’s April, so Deadline is launching its annual Pilot Panic feature where we track buzz on the broadcast pilots as they go through filming, editing, screenings and testing. As usual, the first story is very sketchy and preliminary as many drama pilots still are filming, several comedy pilots have not shot yet and there are no cuts in. Here is a list of some pilots that are getting strong early buzz based on a combination of auspices, script, table read, taping or dailies. Because of how early it is, please take the information with big grain of salt. For a number of projects, especially high-concept dramas, it’s impossible to predict their chances until the pilot has been cut together.
On the hourlong side, ABC has the Nathan Fillion starrer The Rookie, which has a straight-to-series order and has been well received so far. Of the pilots, Courtney Kemp...
