Kino Lorber has acquired North American distribution rights to Bruno Dumont’s “The Empire,” a sci-fi satire starring Anamaria Vartolomei (“Happening”), Camille Cottin (“Call My Agent!”), Lyna Khoudri (“The Three Musketeers”) and Fabrice Luchini.
“The Empire” just world premiered in competition at the Berlin Film Festival, where it won the Silver Bear Jury Prize. The movie marks Dumont’s follow up to “France,” a dark comedy starring Léa Seydoux which competed at the Cannes Film Festival.

It is increasingly weird to recall that for a while, French director Bruno Dumont was the kind of filmmaker who reminded you, often forcibly and somewhat against your will, that the word “auteur” contains most of the letters of “austere.” “The Empire,” another of the director’s proudly off-kilter comedies that pitches the bumbling denizens of a small French village into a vast, sinister conspiracy extending far beyond their foreshortened horizons, hovers several light years — and two janky light sabers — away from austerity. Unfortunately, though, the air out there is also a little thin on hilarity, with the film’s one-gag setup becoming stretched to the point that it doesn’t even matter that it’s a pretty good gag.

After premiering his sequel CoinCoin and the Extra-Humans, the follow-up to P’tit Quinquin, Bruno Dumont embarked on another expansion of his singular cinematic universe with the continuation of Jeannette: The Childhood of Joan of Arc. Titled Joan of Arc in the states and Jeanne in France, it follows the eponymous heroine as she triumphs over the English in the Hundred Years War, and is later put on trial for heresy and burnt at the stake. Ahead of a premiere at Cannes in Un Certain Regard, the first trailer and poster have now arrived, and those expecting another medieval metal jam session may be surprised.

The Film Society of Lincoln Center and UniFrance have announced the complete lineup for the 24th edition of Rendez-Vous with French Cinema, the celebrated annual festival that exemplifies the variety and vitality of contemporary French filmmaking, taking place February 28 – March 10 in New York.

Legendary French film magazine Cahiers du Cinéma has released its official list of the 10 best films of 2018, and per usual it’s a surprising mix of American films and international favorites. The group chooses from films released over the last 12 months in France, which is why Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Phantom Thread” and Steven Spielberg’s “The Post” are included despite appearing on U.S. critics’ lists in 2017.

Established in the 1950s by André Bazin, Joseph-Marie Lo Duca, and Jacques Doniol-Valcroze, France’s Cahiers du cinéma has long been a bastion for quality film criticism. Year after year their rundown of the top films usually ignites a response, but their 2018 edition plays it a little more safe.
Their editors’ top 10 features a few films that got a release in the U.S. last year, but France this year as well as some awaiting a U.S. release. Topping the list is Bertrand Mandico’s gloriously trippy, gender fluid fantasy The Wild Boys, while Lee Chang-dong’s Burning and Lars von Trier’s The House That Jack Built also made the cut.

San Sebastian — In 2014, launching in France and Germany, Netflix hesitated about entering Spain, reportedly because of prevalent piracy. Four years later, the U.S. streaming giant has chosen Madrid for its first European production hub.
Spain is on a roll, impelled by the launch of original series production at Movistar +, Netflix, Amazon and HBO España, the creation of Atresmedia Studios, and the build of drama series production at companies once only known for films, such as Mediapro, Mod Producciones and Filmax.
Where it’s rolling to is another matter. At San Sebastian on Saturday, at a mini conference on Serial Narration: An Episode on Creation and Industry, illustrious Spanish series creatives, producers and executives debated the new TV landscape’s creative and industry opportunities and challenges.

Before Telluride, before Venice, before TIFF, there is the last great festival of the summer season: Locarno Festival, a singular Swiss event that typically features a strong mix of fest favorites from Sundance and Cannes, along with their own batch of returning favorites.
