Finally some backstory
glumski25 May 2022
I've been dearly waiting for some expositional backstory, and Episode 8 of Violet Evergarden finally delivered. The tone is quite different compared to the previous episodes, as it deals with Violet's battle-filled and violet past. I'm eager to see what's going to happen in the following episodes; the series is finally building up quite a bit of suspense.

Warning: Spoilers
Flashback of Violet and Major Gilbert's relationship. Gilbert was instructed to exploit Violet and then discard her. Gilbert never did that and took her to the market on Thanksgiving. She notices a beautiful brooch that is the same colour as his eyes and he pins it on her cape.

The backstory exposed
peterfmodel20 March 2020
This episode changes the tone of the whole series. WE learn of violets backstory. My only point of confusion is it often does not mesh with what we have already seen, but the basic framework is unchanged. We see violets training and bonding with the Major and the final assault on the enemy which was to separate them. Its such a change in tone it took me a while to get used to it. The other issue is we know what happens, so apart from details we do not learn very much. The only significant fact if we discover that Claudia Hodgins was a lieutenant general and outranked the major. I cant say I really enjoyed this episode, but getting more backstory was necessary. I personally would of broken it up over many episodes rather than create a single nameless episode.
