In the noble, vast land of Hokkaido in the north of Japan, in the tumultous early 20th century …
Saichi Sugimoto is a Russo-Japanese War hero who earned the epithet “immortal” for the otherworldy combat skills he demonstrated on many battlefields, including the bloodiest of them all: 203 Meter Hill. Hoping to find a huge sum of money for a certain purpose, he begins searching for gold in Hokkaido.
There, Sugimoto learns about a large trove of gold that was stolen from an Ainu tribe. The man who stole it, Noppera-Bo, hid it just before being captured. He gave 24 of his fellow inmates tattoos that, when combined, make up a single code that reveals the location of the gold, and then helped the prisoners escape.
Around that time, Sugimoto is attacked by a wild brown bear and saved by an Ainu girl named Asirpa, whose father was killed by the man who stole the gold.

For fans of video games, blowing up stuff in the desert, or both, Fallout has been a recent treat. It mixes a post-apocalyptic setting, a misfit gang of weirdos, and a Looney Tunes approach to violence into a potent cocktail of madness, and its audience is already primed for a Season 2. However, that probably won’t come for a while because, ya know, they have to make it and all. But that’s not a problem, because if that venn diagram from above also includes enjoying anime, I have 10 series for you that might capture some of those Fallout vibes and keep you traveling the wasteland for more. 1. Train to the End of the World This spring 2024 release is the newest entry on this list but it’s already making a name for itself thanks to its sci-fi/comedy/horror approach to the life that goes on after the end of everything.

The highly anticipated live-action adaptation of Satoru Noda’s Golden Kamuy had its opening day stage greeting on Jan 19, 2024, at Toho Cinemas Roppongi Hills in Tokyo.
The cast, including Hiroshi Tamaki, Asuka Kudo, Shuntaro Yanagi, and Ryohei Otani shared their behind-the-scenes experiences and shed light on the challenges encountered during filming.
Since Golden Kamuy is set in the late Meiji era in Hokkaido, revolving around a battle for a substantial Ainu treasure, the filmmakers took on the challenge of capturing the authentic winter atmosphere of Hokkaido, leading to extreme conditions during the shoot.
Yanagi revealed the harsh conditions, stating, “It was a tough shoot; we even had icicles forming in our ears. We used to check with each other, wondering, ‘Are our ears frozen?‘”. Asuka Kudo too added to this, highlighting the persistence of the icy challenge, especially during extended takes.

The official website for the live-action film adaptation of Golden Kamuy , based on Satoru Noda's adventure manga, announced today on January 18 that voice actor Kenjiro Tsuda serves as the film's narrator. Tsuda has voiced Hyakunosuke Ogata in the Golden Kamuy anime series since 2018. The site writes, "At the preview event held the other day, Tsuda's voice could be heard as soon as the film started, then surprise reverberated throughout the venue." "To be honest, I was very hesitant about participating. I had played the role of Hyakunosuke Ogata in the anime version, and I wondered if I would interfere with the worldview of the live-action version by narrating the story. Would I confuse the audience? I thought about many things." Tsuda said. "At the same time, however, I thought that Golden Kamuy has a power and scale that blows away such small things. Yes, this is a work that mixes seriousness and comedy,...

I am not sure if it has something to do with the release of another Miyazaki film this year, but the whole anime industry actually seems to experience another surge, with the titles of quality coming one after the other. That this level actually applies to series that continue, new ones, based on manga or original, remakes and relaunches, and the streaming ones is probably the most astonishing feat for 2023, in one of the best seasons in anime we have seen lately.
Without further ado, here are the best anime of 2023, in reverse order, in a list that includes titles whose season or the whole series ended in 2022.

A recent press conference held to commemorate the completion of the Golden Kamuy live-action film unveiled a heartfelt message from the manga creator, Satoru Noda, who shared his thoughts on the film after attending its premiere.
In the message Noda revealed the initial worry he harboured deep down on how his vision for Golden Kamuy would translate onto the big screen. However, after attending the preview, he shared a sense of relief, indicating that the movie had surpassed his expectations.
According to the author, the movie featured many aspects he hadn’t even envisioned.
He then went on to praise the actors for their portrayal of characters, describing them as ‘cool, mature, cute, and well-suited’ to their respective roles. He noted that their appeal brought a unique liveliness to the characters, distinct from the manga.
Noda ended the message by encouraging the fans to watch Golden Kamuy live action film.

The probably penultimate season of “Golden Kamuy”, one of the best titles of the last few years, saw a number of changes. Brain's Base produced the season, replacing Geno Studio, while Shizutaka Sugahara replaced Hitoshi Sugahara as chief series director, and Takumi Yamakawa replaced Kenichi Onuki as character designer. The result seems to move more into comedic territory (action comedy if you prefer), particularly in the first episodes, but thankfully, the usual anime silliness is placed in the background as time passes.

The Ainu are an East Asian ethnic group indigenous to northern Japan, the original inhabitants of Hokkaido and some of its nearby Russian territories. A number of those who have not been fully assimilated as Japanese are living in small communities such as the one in Hokkaido the movie focuses on, essentially surviving through tourism. It is also worth noting that there has been a rise of interest towards these marginalized communities thorough “Golden Kamuy” a multi-awarded manga that focuses on Ainu people and has already sold more than 18 million copies and spawned three seasons of the homonymous anime. “Ainu Mosir” takes a much more grounded approach to the issue by focusing on a coming of age story.

Anime has grown by leaps and bounds over the past decade as it’s progressively evolved from a niche interest into mainstream entertainment. There are now more places than ever to consume anime, whether it’s on broadcast television or any of the available streaming services, some of which are devoted entirely to anime content.
It’s truly exciting to see the medium’s continued success, but part of the reason that it’s found such universal acclaim is because often anime is just as concerned about representation as it is with entertainment. Anime doesn’t just speak to everyone, but specifically highlights those that may get overlooked elsewhere and feel like their voices are diminished.

Screening two years after the second season, the third part of “Golden Kamuy” featured more polished graphics, and a change of scenery towards Sakhalin, where the Russian element becomes a central one in the narrative.
The fractions have changed once again, as Sugimoto has sided with Tsurumi and, along with Lt. Koito, Tsukishima, and Tanigaki is in search of Kiroranke, who has kidnapped Asirpa and is moving towards Russia, along Shiraishi and Ogata. The latter, however, seems to have his own agenda, although everyone is looking to “exploit” Asirpa to learn of the whereabouts of her father’s gold.

Continuing the story from where it stopped in the first season, but, thankfully, not in the same style it concluded, the second season of Golden Kamuy sees a number of opposing factions coming together for their common goal, although a number of secret agendas are eventually revealed.
As winter melts into spring, Asirpa and Sugimoto take a break from their hunt for the lost Ainu treasure to gather delicious herbs for her village, meditating on all the revelations they’ve absorbed over the past snowy months. But they can’t relax for too long, because Tsurumi is still hot on their trail, and he’s found a new ally in a most unusual taxidermist for putting the Abashiri skins he’s collected into a complete treasure map. The long and winding road ahead is overflowing with allies and enemies alike as the change in seasons changes the game.
