Not to sound like a broken record, but it was, once again, a pretty quiet weekend at the box office. Director Matthew Vaughn's "Argylle" topped the charts with a modest $18 million (which was sadly below industry projections) and, quite frankly, that isn't going to be enough to keep theaters afloat until the slate improves in March. But amid the unfortunate slowness of the weekend, a savior emerged in the form of Jesus. Yes, that very same Jesus. And it's not the first time he's come to the rescue in recent months.
The Chosen Inc. released the first three episodes of "The Chosen" season 4 in theaters over the weekend in partnership with Fathom Events. It paid off: The target audience indeed showed up for the cinematic, episodic look at the life of Jesus Christ, with the release pulling in just shy of $6 million over the weekend. The “Sound of Freedom” co-writers are sounding the alarm on child trafficking, and refuting that the film is a right-leaning “faith-based” feature.
“Sound of Freedom” director/writer Alejandro Monteverde and co-writer Rob Barr penned an op-ed for The Hollywood Reporter addressing the QAnon conspiracy theories surrounding the Jim Caviezel-starring film, which is based on real-life child trafficking rings.
“It has been difficult to watch controversy and partisanship distract, even a little, from the deep intention of our work: to use the power of film to bring awareness to the reality of child trafficking,” their piece read. “Way back in 2015, when we began researching and writing this project, we told each other many times, ‘If there’s one issue that can unite everyone, it’s ending child trafficking.’ We still believe that.”
They continued, “Child trafficking is not a conservative or a liberal issue. It is a fundamental human rights issue,...

Not everyone scored a ticket to “Barbie” this weekend, and that included Paul Schrader, who shared on Facebook over the weekend that all showings of the Gerwig-directed movie in his area were sold out Saturday and Sunday. Schrader reported back on Sunday that he saw “Sound of Freedom,” Angel Studios’ child-sex-trafficking drama starring Jim Caviezel, instead. And Schrader joins the many audience members turning out for the film, which in just over two weeks of release has now grossed $124 million.
The “Master Gardener” and “First Reformed” filmmaker shared his thoughts on what’s perceived by some as a conservative, faith-oriented movie. Caviezel stars in the true story as government agent Tim Ballard, who embarks on a mission to rescue children from sex traffickers in Colombia.
“Sound Of Freedom. Interesting film, more interesting phenomenon. It’s simplistic, schematic and effective in the Hollywood tradition of “message” movies–but is not “Christian” per se.

Well, it certainly wasn’t the gang busters weekend we had anticipated, but Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning Part One was still able to pull off the best 5-day opening of the franchise with a little over $80 million, beating the 5-day take of 2000’s Mission: Impossible- 2’s $78.8 million when the average ticket price was $5.39 compared to 2023’s $10.45. However Dead Reckoning Part One’s 3-day take of $56.2 million will fall short of 2018’s Fallout record of $61.2 million.
So what does this all mean? Well, just a few weeks ago we gave the death knell to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny for opening to such low numbers, that are actually better than what Dead Reckoning did. So why is this not a code red for the Tom Cruise fronted franchise? Well for starters, reviews for Mission: Impossible are far better than they were for Indy with a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score...

“Sound of Freedom,” a religious thriller led by “The Passion of the Christ” star Jim Caviezel, is becoming an unlikely box office savior. The faith-based movie about child sex trafficking has collected an impressive $40 million after six days of release.
“Sound of Freedom” opened last Tuesday, generating a mighty $14.2 million on the Independence Day holiday. The film picked up another $18.2 million between Friday and Sunday, enough to place third on domestic box office charts behind “Insidious: The Red Door” ($32.6 million) and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” ($26.5 million). It’s playing in 2,850 North American theaters, a smaller footprint than “Insidious” and “Indiana Jones.
“As with our July 4th numbers, today’s numbers exceed our expectations, and we’re going to continue this momentum,” said Brandon Purdie, head of theatrical distribution at Angel Studios, the independent studio that’s backing the film, in a statement. “We’re getting messages from...

The Jim Caviezel child-trafficking drama “Sound of Freedom” from faith-based distributor Angel Studios made $14.2 million in a single day when it opened July 4. You can chalk that success up to any number of reasons: Religious audiences are underserved, the film has been bolstered by major right-wing pundits (and Donald Trump himself), and it opened on a rare Tuesday after “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” had five days to quiet down.
But the film’s real godsend is the ability for “Sound of Freedom” fans to buy movie tickets for complete strangers.
Angel Studios calls it “Pay It Forward,” in which you can buy a ticket for “Sound of Freedom,” pay for another one, and someone else can apply to redeem it if they don’t have the financial means. A larger group of people buying tickets in bulk, such as for a company or a church, can even...

Update, 2:20Pm: Disney/Lucasfilm’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny officially wins Tuesday with $11.698M over Sound of Freedom‘s reported $11.5M. Monday revised on Dial of Destiny was $11.7M, which means business was even on July 4th; and that’s solid for any tentpole on that holiday. 5-day on Dial of Destiny is $83.7M.
Previous: Angels Studios’ Jim Caviezel thriller Sound of Freedom, came on strong Tuesday and gave Disney/Lucasfilm’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny a run for its money at the domestic box office. However, until actuals are reported, it remains to be seen who won on July 4th, with both distributors reporting $11.5 million.
Rival distributors off their own calculations see Sound of Freedom as a clear No. 2 in its opening yesterday with $11M at 2,634 theaters, with Indy winning the day.

With a rare Tuesday opening, “Sound of Freedom” (Angel Studios), a drama starring Jim Caviezel as a real-life rescuer of children from traffickers, grossed $11,563,200 — just under the day’s total for “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (Disney), which played in almost 2,000 more theaters with just under $11.7 million.
Another difference: “Indiana Jones” often played on multiple screens. Based on theater spot-checks, “Freedom” played mostly single screens, often with smaller capacities, and saw sold-out shows. The result was a stark contrast in the films’ per-theater average: “Indiana” was about $2,543 in 4,600 theaters, while “Freedom” saw about $4,400 in 2,634 theaters.
Angel also reported that its “Pay It Forward” promotion grossed an additional $2,679,000 thanks to patrons buying gift tickets for others for future use. Under normal industry practice, that revenue should be counted as they are used. With that among added, the day’s take for the film exceeded $14.2 million, which would make it #1 for the day.

Updated Exclusive: Angel Studios’ thriller Sound of Freedom starring Jim Caviezel has seen its presales spike to $10 million. This is before the pic’s opening on July 4 in north of 2,600 locations.
Many rivals are tracking this semi-faith-based, based-on-a-true-story title about about former Homeland Security agent Tim Ballard, who took rescuing abducted children around the globe into his own hands. They’re spotting a $20 million six-day start, impressive for a non-major-studio adult thriller. We’ll see how this plays out. There’s George Foreman the boxer and George Foreman the grill. The Sony biopic out this Friday offers a different George. “I want to spread the word of God,” says Foreman (Khris Davis) in the trailer for “Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World.”
It’s a production from faith-based Sony Pictures’ label Affirm Films. Its first film in 2008, “Fireproof” starring Kirk Cameron, grossed $33 million on a $500,000 budget. To date, the (mostly domestic) global theatrical gross for Affirm titles stands at $520 million — $400 million more than the films’ total production costs.
Directed by George Tillman Jr. and with Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker in a supporting role, “Foreman” may represent the biggest Affirm budget to date. (One source lists it at $34 million.) Prior Affirm budgets topped out at $20 million. It’s also got one of Affirm’s biggest releases, with 2,575 theaters.
Opening prospects are unclear.

Adding $58.2 million over the weekend, The Super Mario Bros. Movie brought its three-week total to $434.3 million. Meanwhile, debuting in a distant second place was Evil Dead Rise with $23.5 million. In an even further third-place finish was newcomer The Covenant which debuted with $6.3 million over the weekend. These two debuts pushed John Wick: Chapter 4 from third to fourth place this weekend where it added $5.8 million to bring its five-week total to $168.9 million. Climbing a spot and re-entering the top five was Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves with $5.4 million. This resulted in the film’s overall four-week tally reaching $82.2 million.

Easter hasn’t always been a great time to release movies, compared to March when the advent of spring break for many schools has made it an ideal spot for studios to release their family films, outside the usual summer and holiday school breaks. But that’s no longer the case thanks to the various box office records set this weekend by “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”
In some ways, Universal was the first studio to really capitalize on the Easter weekend by releasing “Furious 7” there in early April 2015; its follow-up “The Fate of the Furious” also did very well there two years later. That was probably why Universal scheduled Illumination and Nintendo’s “The Super Mario Bros.” to be released into 4,343 theaters on the Wednesday before the weekend, something that really paid off. So far, it has grossed $204.6 million in just its first five days, putting it just...

Yet again, a new film stands atop the box-office weekend as The Super Mario Bros. Movie took control of first place by a margin of $131.8 million.
Debuting with an overall total of $204.6 million and a weekend total of $146.4 million, The Super Mario Bros. Movie eclipsed all competitors for dominion over the weekend box-office. In a very distant second-place was John Wick: Chapter 4 holding its ground with $14.6 million over the weekend. This boosted the film’s three-week total to $147.1 million. Oscilloscope Laboratories’ Cannes Jury Prize Winner and Independent Spirit international film winner Joyland led New York’s Film Forum to one of its biggest opening weekends for a foreign language film in nearly a decade, taking in north of $21k on one screen, the distributor said. “Air,” which opened in wide theatrical release on Wednesday and stars Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Viola Davis, Chris Tucker and Jason Bateman, details how a then-underdog Nike bet its footwear future on then-rookie Michael Jordan. The film dramatizes boardroom pitches and frantic business phone calls into a tale of how capitalism was pretzeled into supplying fortune and glory to members of a demographic rarely on the receiving end.
So it makes sense that the Skydance and Mandalay-produced film is the first from Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s Artists Equity. One of the selling points of the venture is a promise of profit participation for both above-the-line stars and below-the-line artists. The Hollywood titans dipped into their own fees, along with money saved during production via artist-driven efficiency, to create a discretionary bonus system, insiders told TheWrap.

Paramount Pictures had itself one heck of a year in 2022, and the studio already has one big hit on the books in 2023 with "Scream VI" (which is nearing $150 million worldwide after this past weekend). But the studio rolled the 20-sided dice with a big-budget reboot of "Dungeons & Dragons" with "Honor Among Thieves," which hit theaters over the weekend. The results are a mixed bag of good news and bad news. Unfortunately, even taking the good with the bad, this movie has a rough road ahead, financially speaking.
"Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" pulled in an estimated $38.5 million during its opening weekend, per Box Office Mojo. That was on the higher side of expectations, which had the fantasy film from directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley taking in $30 million on the low-end. March really has been great at the box office, beginning with Michael B. Jordan’s “Creed III,” followed by two out of three franchise sequels that outperformed their original movies. This week saw the release of a new version of a popular role-playing game, as Paramount released “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” into 3,855 theaters on Friday.
The movie, starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Hugh Grant, Regé-Jean Page, and more, came into the weekend with terrific reviews after a SXSW Film Festival debut, and then Paramount gave the movie a number of previews leading up to its official Thursday opening. In fact, the movie racked up $5.6 million in those early previews, including $3.5 million on Thursday, and that number added up to a fantastic $15.3 million for Friday.

“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” (Paramount) — a franchise reboot, not a remake or sequel — provided the weekend with the fifth straight film to open to over $30 million. While not unprecedented for the month — it last happened in March 2017, with four out of five openings over $40 million, three of those over $85 million — it’s unusual. More importantly, it reflects the steady rebound of 2023.
“D&d” received better-than-expected reviews (70 Metacritic score) and a boost from its SXSW premiere, but credit also goes to built-in interest for the world-building dice game and good word of mouth (A- Cinemascore).
At $38.5 million it landed ahead of pre-release projections, although short of the $40 million that seemed possible after Friday’s returns. Saturday saw a 15 percent drop, a bit above average but hardly cause for worry. With spring or Easter break ahead for many schools, this has a chance to sustain. For exhibitors, that’s short-term good news; for Paramount,...

Back in the year 2000, before some of you reading this were probably even born, New Line Cinema tried launching a franchise based on the popular game Dungeons & Dragons. With its built in fanbase and $45 million budget (roughly $77 million in 2023 dollars) it seemed like a safe bet that it could at least recoup its budget simply by bringing in the fans of the game. That film would open to just $7.2 million on its way to a horrible $33.8 million worldwide take and would quickly be forgotten (ee dedicated a recent Wtf episode to it). Well, 23 years later it appears that ship has been righted as Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has come in slightly above expectations with an estimated $38.5 million opening weekend take. I guess it makes sense that one of the original Freaks & Geeks is half responsible for making the first successful D&d film. Indeed, John Francis Daley...

It’s looking like a so-so start for Paramount/eOne’s “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” which has earned an estimated $38.5 million opening weekend from 3,855 theaters.
The fantasy adventure based on the tabletop role-playing game has earned strong word of mouth with a 91% critics and 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes to go with an A- on CinemaScore. Reviews have praised the film as an exciting blockbuster for both hardcore “D&d” fans and general audiences who have never played the game.
But “Dungeons & Dragons” also sports a reported $150 million production budget and a marketing spend that included a premiere at SXSW. That excellent word-of-mouth will have to bring considerable legs to this film’s box office run for it to earn any sort of theatrical profit, and to do that, “Dungeons & Dragons” will have to sustain its buzz against Universal/Illumination’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” next weekend,...

“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” emerged victorious over last weekend’s champ “John Wick: Chapter 4” at the domestic box office, rolling $38.5 million from 3,855 North American theaters in its opening weekend.
Buoyed by positive reviews and enthusiastic word-of-mouth, Paramount and eOne’s adaptation of the popular role-playing game landed on the higher end of expectations, which had pegged the film with a debut between $30 million and $40 million.
Internationally, “Dungeons & Dragons” collected $33 million from 58 markets for a global tally of $71.5 million.
Ticket sales are expected to remain strong in the coming weeks, which is necessary because the film cost $150 million before its hefty marketing campaign. Inaugural crowds were likely boosted by hardcore D&d players, but analysts believe the film will appeal to broader audiences, who may not know as much about the game, as it continues its run on the big screen.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves opened to an honorable enough $38.5 million at the domestic box office, enough to take out John Wick: Chapter 4 and top the chart.
The big-budget movie — based on Hasbro’s fantasy tabletop game — came in ahead of expectations but will still need strong legs throughout April and into May in order to launch a new movie franchise for Paramount and eOne after costing $150 million to produce before marketing.
Dungeons & Dragons certainly has that chance: it earned stellar reviews and an A- CinemaScore from audiences. Upcoming spring breaks and the Easter holiday will be another advantage. But adapting games has always been tricky business. Last year, Sony’s Uncharted debuted to $44 million domestically on its way to ultimately being considered a success.
