All are legendary A.I.'s in pop culture, Hal from 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Robbie aka Robbie the Robot from Forbidden Planet (1956), Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) and Colossus from Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970).
- GoofsIn the burned-out laboratory, it is stated that the liquid nitrogen would have been an accelerant (something that promotes fire). Not only is nitrogen not flammable, but as an inert gas it is frequently used to extinguish fires without additional damage.
- Quotes
Iris West-Allen: This is why we train, Nora. Every single day. Not when you feel like it, not because you're mad, and why you always have someone in your ear when you're in the field to help you.
Nora West-Allen: I know that.
Iris West-Allen: Then why did you turn me off?
Nora West-Allen: Because I can't listen to you anymore. It's always the same condescending, I-know-better-than-you crap. I just want to be me and you sit behind your desk and you say "no" every time and I've been hearing it my whole life and I'm sick of it.
Iris West-Allen: Your whole life?
Nora West-Allen: Yes, Mom. Since I can remember, and you never change.
[Iris storms out the room]
Barry Allen: Iris. You know, Nora, I wish you would try to understand who your mom is today, and stop seeing her as who she becomes in the future.
- ConnectionsReferences Alien (1979)
Iris is Upset because Nora "hates her". Okay, Deal with it! She's not your daughter. She is your future self's daughter. Iris and Barry have Not Conceived a child. ... and from the moment Nora has told them about herself, all bets are off that Nora will be who they have.
But, Iris hasn't spent nine months let alone 25 year raising anyone. She and Barry are still Newlyweds. After all Barry was jailed practically right after their wedding and they were consumed with defeating DeVoe. Barry even reminds her with their 'never having had a First Dance' comment.
Iris has met a woman who happens to share her DNA; who has history with a different Iris West. An Iris West who raised a child without her husband to support her.
There is what, only about a three year age difference between them (Nora says she's 25, Iris is what maybe 27?). If Iris and Nora had met, say at Jitters, and started a conversation, without Nora mentioning any connection, would they have even become friends? Iris needs to calm down and Nora needs to act like a twenty something, not a teenager having a tantrum.
Iris is jealous of Nora's need to connect with Barry (at least she doesn't have to worry about there being a romantic reason). Barry is feeling the connection because of the speedforce and his own history with making timeline changes. But, he is training Nora just as he did Kid Flash and Jessie Quick ... he is passing on his knowledge.
There was really no need to reveal last week her feelings towards Iris. I mean - okay the writers may have wanting to keep up the anger issue (especially after a 2 week hiatus). But they didn't need try So hard!
These three people DON'T need to form an instant family. They can become family, just as all of the other speedsters and heros have ... slowly by making bonds. They can become friends NOT Parents - that ship has sailed.
Iris's whole speech about what she did to Nora is done with this horrible present tense emotion. Barry's answer nails issue on the head! "You are never going to become the person that Nora knows in the future." Grant's acting is wonderful; his portrayal of Barry earnestly trying to be a good father and teacher is great. But, it's when he is really showing us Barry connecting as a newlywed (still in love with his wife) that he is amazing.
The real question is why hasn't Nore done a Back to the Future erase? From the moment she explains what Iris did, we know that Iris probably won't now. Take the lessons Nora's imparting and use them when you actually have time to conceive a child (girl, boy or maybe even twins).
I don't usually write a review but this episode just required me to get the whole "NOT a Parent" issue that's been building off my chest. Which caused one of my lowest scores ... I almost went with a 7 but ...
