"Dr. Livingstone, I Presume?"
lavatch12 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
In this penultimate episode, what is possibly the best moment in the series occurs deep in the Caicara jungle near Puerta Maripana in Venezuela. CIA officer Jim Greer is being held captive with a group of Venezuelan dissidents. As Greer is describing the upcoming election and how a woman named Gloria Bonalde may unseat the dictator Reynes, a grizzled man emerges from the shadows with a beatific look. This is long-lost Sergio, the spouse of Mrs. Bonalde. At this moment, one expects Greer to make a statement similar to that of Henry Morton Stanley, when he met up with his old buddy in the heart of Africa: "Dr. Livingston, I presume?"

The program opens with the childhood home of Ubarri torched on the orders of President Reyes. This will be the last straw for Ubarri in resisting his boss. The next gruesome order of Reyes is to kill the entirety of the forty-one prisoners held in the Caicara jungle prison.

But Dr. Jack has reunited with the small American team in the jungle, and they conscript mercenaries to search for Jim Greer. As the mass executions are taking place, Dr. Jack fears that Jim is dead. But he is informed by Sergio Bonalde that Jim was taken away for special treatment and locked away in a cell in Caracas.

The title of the episode, Dios y Federación (God and Federation) is the traditional symbol of the nation of Venezuela. It was the slogan used by rebel forces during the Federal War, a civil war that occurred at roughly the same time as the American Civil War. It was later emblazoned on the country's coat of arms after the conflict ended in 1863. But the republican values have not been honored by President Reyes. As if it is not enough for Reyes to play judge, jury, and executioner, he personally slits the throat of his trusted minion Ubarri in the Miraflores palace. The ruthless, paranoid dictator now literally has blood on his hands.

Isn't this just amazing, the car isn't working, JR says pop the hood, but JR doesn't even get a chance to fix the car, they shoot at the car a couple of times, break some glasses and then mike kills the bad guys. And they get in the car and drive away. All the car needed was to be riddled with some bullets and it would be just like a brand new car, working perfectly.

4 out of 5 stars.

A good episode that delivers with Jack trying to find Jim. Jack makes a deal with some mercenaries to help. President Reyes is tying up the loose ends. Thrilling. Exciting. And good.

Addressing some of the silly things that seem to make people angry this episode...

Warning: Spoilers
I read through all the reviews and a lot of issues people with lower ratings have seem not to understand what's going on...

1) Jack is ex-military so yes he can handle a gun and use it to take out soldiers.

2) the satellite was never something hard to shut off, that wasn't the issue. They just didn't know what the satellite was being used for

3) Reyes bombs the poor neighbourhood because the poor and educated areas are the two places where most of his competitions votes are coming from. He's trying to cut down on the number of people voting for her and inspire fear in people who dare go against him.

4) Yes, the mercs were paid by Reyes to guard the containers. But at the end of the day, they're mercs... If they're offered a tonne of cash they can choose to change sides. Maybe then they can get out of that jungle too which is a bonus. (and in a world of violence yeah Greer cut off his finger but outside Hollywood many people will overlook something like that for a bunch of money. Ever heard of Nub City, USA?

5) The final prayer scene is maybe 10-15 seconds. Relax.

It's not the best episode in the series but giving it a 1/10 because you don't understand things isn't fair. There's twists and action in it like all the other episodes.

Bad storyline

Warning: Spoilers
They've really diverged from the books which told credible stories. The CIA does bad stuff but they don't go into countries, even bad ones, and shoot up a sovereign government's army and presidential staff. This is not the Jack Ryan of the books. Entertaining maybe, but the main character could be anybody

The pacing of this season is so bad because we finally had the action ramp up and finally had some good moments, but it was still just too long and drawn out for me to really care.

Not bad

Warning: Spoilers
Not a bad episode, but I was expecting something a little more thrilling for the penultimate one of the season. It seems all of the best action in this show occurred in the early episodes. On a plus side, there's some good tension and they finally make great use of the excellent Arnold Vosloo, which I was pleased about.

Garbage

Warning: Spoilers
Whoever wrote this episode has obviously completely lost it.

First, Reyes' goons burn down a building in a poor part of town where, as we later found out, Reyes an Ubarri grew up. Why did he order that? Because reasons. The whole things makes absolutely zero sense. Perhaps they have decided that now Reyes is just a blood crazy lunatic.

Then Ryan casually strolls into the merc base and hires them to help him free Greer. Now, never mind the fact that it was Greer who cut off Jost's finger, those mercs are guarding the mining equipment for, presumably, Reyes. Therefore, they should be in legue with Reyes and willing to make the mining opertation work (Jost even makes it clear that they are to be given a cut from the operation). Yet they decide to attack the camp of Reyes' men, therefore turning against their partner. So now they are ok with the mining operation going bust (which will inevitably happen down the line, because the rescuing of Greer is a part of series of events that should lead to Reys' downfall) and getting no money? Yeah, sure. Also, during the rescue operation Jost miraculously grows back his cut off index finger. I guess that was the reason he didn' hold any grudges.

To add to all this, all of a sudden USA can "remotely shut down" the satellite that was such a big deal in the beginning of this season. You remember, the magical satellite that can see ore deep underground from thousands of kilometers up in space, and also pinpoint the location of four soldiers within vast expanses of the jungle? Well, now it's gone, just like that. We can only wonder why didn't they shut it down immediately, if it was such a concern.

During the episode we are also treated to some political speeches from both sides that look like they were written by a high school freshman who is absolutely certain he is the world's foremost authority on morality, politics, right and wrong and how the good and bad guys speak and behave. Cringe alert.

Finally, the episode ends with the completely unnecessary extended scene of Greer's muslim prayer. What is the point of that?

Absolutely terrible.

You Can Never Be Too Careful In This Business.
wandernn1-81-6832746 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Okay this will be my second watch thru of this one because my review got erased by a brief outage.

So here we pickup after the tremendously long opening credits, some hooded masked individuals setting fire to someone's house.

Swap to the CIA safe-house outside Caracas. Ryan and Mike are talking what Reyes is up to. A phone call reveals that Greer is not where he is supposed to be, and Mike and Ryan spring into action.

Finding the vehicle Greer was transported in, Ryan and Mike are ambushed by soldiers with an armored vehicle. Wow what a farce of a scene. 1st off that 50cal would have ripped through that car like swiss cheese that Ryan and Mike were hiding behind. -1 Star for that. Secondly after Mike deals with the armored vehicle with a handily placed RPG, they get in that riddled vehicle that should have been ripped to shreds and they drive off in it..... O really? -1 Star for that. Dumb Dumb Dumb. Is this the A-Team???

Cut to Greer, taking a beating. Oh Greer he sure takes a beating well. He gets a little RumBoarding too on top of it.

Reyes gives a press conference saying he's going to move UP the election. Bonalde tells her people that they need to get out there and inform the people that the election can still be won!!! She is such the optimist!!!!

Mike and Ryan call in for assistance in planning a rescue attempt for Greer.

Ryan and Uber's team hire some forest mercs to help them assault the prison camp to rescue Greer. Meanwhile Greer is making friends in the prison camp. And Reyes gives a rousing political speech.

Reyes then has a dinner with his 'friend' and adviser, Miguel Ubarri and wife. Reyes is obviously suspicious of Miguel's loyalty. Informed that their satellite has been knocked out remotely, Reyes orders all the prisoners executed. Much to Miguel's obvious objection.

The Ryan team gets to the prison camp. +1 Star for the merc's reaction that they might be storming this camp and the satellite might not be knocked out, or hence no surprise.

The camp however has been mostly evacuated. Most of the remaining prisoners executed. Ryan runs around crazily looking for Greer. But of course Greer is gone. They do however the shallowly buried body of Matice, much to everyone's reaction of sadness, including mine.

Greer has been brought to the presidential palace, and Ubarri spots him being escorted in. Ubarri goes to confront Reyes, to warn him this is a grave mistake, to deal with the American this way. After the typical I do the things that need to be done speech from Reyes. Reyes slits his good friend's throat.

-1 Star for the true predictability of this result.

At the end of the episode, Greer is caged up in the Palace, offering prayer to Allah. Did we know already that Greer is Muslim? I forget.

Anyhow, I found this episode to be one of the very weak ones in this series. 3/10
