Palme d’Or winning director Ruben Östlund is among 10 directors selected to present their upcoming feature film projects at the second edition of the Cannes Marché du Film’s Investors Circle initiative.
The one-day event, taking place on May 19, is aimed at connecting elevated, international feature film projects with film financiers and high-net worth individuals with a desire to invest in cinema.
Östlund, who won the Palme d’Or for The Square and Triangle of Sadness, which was also nominated for three Oscars, will attend the event in person.
The Marché du Film did not give details of the projects being showcased, but it is likely the director will be talking about upcoming airplane disaster movie The Entertainment System is Down, which he told Deadline last year he hopes to shoot in early 2025.
Other filmmakers due in Cannes for the event include Japan’s Chie Hayakawa, whose feature film debut...

Ali Abbasi’s Donald Trump drama The Apprentice, Anora, the latest from The Florida Project and Red Rocket director Sean Baker, and Andrea Arnold’s Bird, starring Barry Keoghan and Franz Rogowski, are among the highlights of this year’s Cannes Film Festival competition.
Abbasi, the Iran-born, Sweden-based director, whose Holy Spider was a sensation of the 2022 Cannes festival, returns with his story of how a young Donald Trump and the notorious lawyer Roy Cohn built up Trump’s real estate business in New York in the 1970s and 1980s. Sebastian Stan stars as Trump, Succession‘s Jeremy Strong plays Cohn and Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm) is wife Ivana.

Exclusive: Amazon MGM Studios’ Orion Pictures has entered production on Hedda, its reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s famed 1891 stage play Hedda Gabler, announcing the addition of six to its cast. Newcomers include Imogen Poots (Baltimore), Tom Bateman (Thirteen Lives), Finbar Lynch (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan), Mirren Mack (The Witcher: Blood Origins), Jamael Westman (Hamilton), and Saffron Hocking (Top Boy).
The actors join an ensemble that also includes Tessa Thompson, Nina Hoss, and Nicholas Pinnock, as previously announced.

Bleecker Street has acquired U.S. rights to Sasquatch Sunset, the mysterious new feature from renowned filmmakers David and Nathan Zellner (Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter), Deadline reports today.
Riley Keough (The Lodge), Jesse Eisenberg (Zombieland: Double Tap, Vivarium), Nathan Zellner, and Christophe Zajac-Denek (“Twin Peaks: The Return”) star in the film.
As for plot, details remain scarce at this time other than it’s described as “a year in the life of a singular family.”
What we do know is that Eisenberg is playing a Sasquatch. As in, a head to toe hairy cryptid.
In a recent interview with Variety, the actor teased that he’d be going full cryptid in Sasquatch Sunset. “I play a Sasquatch: full makeup, full body hair, no lines. I grunt, but no lines,” he told the outlet. “I’m so looking forward to this.”
That seems to hint toward the possibility of this film...

It is important for me to get the name right- Nightmare Radio: The Night Stalker. Yes, that’s the name. And it is literally centered around a nighttime radio horror show host getting stalked by a creepy dude. But that’s not all. The movie also doubles down as a horror anthology as the show host, her listeners, and even the stalker guy share their own little horror stories. Some of those work way better than the main story; the others fall flat. The movie uses lots of signature horror tropes and leaves quite a lot to your own interpretation. In the recap of Nightmare Radio: The Night Stalker, I will to explain all of that.
Spoilers Ahead
Plot Synopsis: What Happens In ‘Nightmare Radio’?
We are dropped right in the middle of the first story, titled “Playtime.” In about three minutes or so, the short successfully manages to get...

“It’s about creating monsters to start wars and steal natural resources.”
Lorcan Finnegan, whose sci-fi Vivarium premiered in Cannes Critics’ Week in 2019, is in town with wife and Lovely Productions partner Brunella Cocchiglia to meet financing partners and sales agents for his upcoming dystopian fable Goliath.
Set in the near-future, the subversion of the David and Goliath myth follows the inhabitants of a pig-breeding community next to a lake containing an island inhabited by a giant who according to legend ate the early settlers’ babies.
When the pigs fall ill, the head of the settlement orders a militia of youngsters to kill the monster.

Skulking foxes, future-telling CCTV, a psychiatric hospital and a pair of suspiciously pale vintners all feature in this assortment of treats and duds
This pick and mix of short horror films by different directors is a decidedly mixed bag, with a couple of flavoursome, sugar-rush-inducing treats – but many more stale, unchewable duds. The framing device, directed by Carlos Goitia, has DJ Candy on the night shift, taking calls from listeners recounting their own scary stories. In between these mini chapters, resourceful Candy copes with a creepy caller named Jack who harbours a grudge against her for an earlier slight. The ending twist comes with a dull thud.
Among the short films, the best is far and away Foxes, an eerie modern fairytale about a lonely photographer (Marie Ruane) living on a seemingly entirely empty housing estate full of ticky tacky identical houses in Ireland. She becomes obsessed with a skulk...

Based on a concept by Michael Kraetzer, Nightmare Radio: The Night Stalker is an anthology feature assembled from short films released as early as 2011. The wraparound segments come from director Charly Goitia, as late-night radio DJ Candy (Paula Brasca) asks listeners to call in and share their real-life horror stories. In between the wild experiences recounted on-air, an obsessed fan takes great lengths to make sure Candy hears his voice – even if it sounds like someone trying to mimic Roger L. Jackson’s Ghostface voice.
Playtime opens the film in the middle of the night, punctuated by a television turning on and awakening a sleeping woman. As she ventures downstairs to investigate, a spectre dressed as a bride appears before piling on the spooky occurrences.

I have an opinion: "Slasher" is better than "American Horror Story."
Maybe that's not so controversial to say in 2023, when the popular horror anthology series created by Ryan Murphy hasn't had a good season in almost five years, and hasn't had a great one in over 10. "AHS" premiered in 2011, the same year that the sci-fi/technology-run-amok anthology series "Black Mirror" premiered. Curiously, though "Black Mirror" was just as popular, and was covered as furiously as "AHS" was in its prime, its influence on subsequent sci-fi visions seems to have jumped mediums to film. One can imagine pressing play on a new season of "Black Mirror" and watching films like "Ex-Machina," "The Circle," and "Vivarium," were a few minutes shaved off each.
"AHS," however, spawned a veritable renaissance in horror anthology series, from HBO's "Room 104," to Hulu's "Castle Rock," to Syfy's "Channel Zero." Before "AHS," you'd have to...

If you’re drawn to creepy and unsettling imagery like I am, odds are you have likely come across and fallen down the rabbit hole of images online known as “liminal spaces.” These images often portray typically bustling places—streets, malls, schools, sprawling corridors—in their most desolate states, uncharacteristically empty and isolated to the point of being unsettling. The public’s fascination with liminal spaces has been growing in recent years, but the term liminality itself first surfaced in the field of anthropology through the early-to-mid 20th-century work of scholars like Arnold van Gennep and Victor Turner in their study of rituals. Put as simply as can be, liminality describes a state of transition, where someone or something is neither here nor there, connected to what was before and what is to come, but not fully planted in either.

Children fashion designer Christine (Eva Green) fights complicated mental health issues after a deadly accident she was responsible for, but never got convicted of, because it happened somewhere else – in a sweatshop in the Philippines. This is of course a wild guess during the first 30 minutes of the film’s runtime, because Christine has no recollection of that particular event, and we build the bigger puzzle along the road that finally does answer all questions except the one about the legal ramifications. She is just presented as someone suffering from a number of symptoms beginning with a (selective) memory loss, quivering and hallucinations to something that makes her wear a Cpap mask at night. With her career on hold, and not much she can analyse without the material to talk about, Christine is a wreck and there is no way denying it. Between different manifestations of the malaise, she...

"Nocebo" is an equally psychological and physical horror movie. It's mind and body horror, both surreal and all too realistic. Director Lorcan Finnegan's film takes a horrific part of the world, which is best not to spoil, and turns it into a suitably nightmarish setting featuring stars Eva Green and Chai Fonacier.
The home is another cage in Finnegan's new film. "Lorcan explored that a bit in "Vivarium,'" Green told us in a recent interview, referencing Finnegan's 2019 sci-fi mystery. In his last film, 2019’s “Vivarium,” Lorcan Finnegan gave the fantasy of homeownership a nightmarish makeover to mediocre results. Even at 97 minutes, that movie feels like an interminable slog. But worse still is its thuddingly literal premise, where Jesse Eisenberg and Imogen Poots find themselves trapped in a planned neighborhood and forced to raise a child while they dig their own graves. As if moviegoers needed another film that suggests suburban domestic life is a trap of tedium and drudgery that bilks people of agency and fulfillment so the next generation may suffer the same fate.

There are two ways domestic service can go in horror movies: Either the innocent worker is walking into a diabolical trap, or she (it’s almost always a woman) is in fact the smiling angel of death, bringing doom to privileged employers who are oblivious of peril until it’s too late. In Nikyatu Jusu’s “Nanny,” which reaches theaters later this month, we get Scenario No. 1. In Lorcan Finnegan’s new “Nocebo,” about another immigrant laborer hired into a wealthy household, it is No. 2.
Similarly offering somewhat upscale genre fare, this first-ever co-production between Ireland and the Philippines is a diverting if not entirely successful mix of sociopolitical commentary with psychological and supernatural suspense elements, stronger in the realms of directorial style and performance than writing. Rlje Films opens the feature on 115 U.S. screens this Friday, with release to digital and VOD platforms Nov. 22, then niche streamer Shudder’s various territories later on.

Lorcan Finnegan’s ‘Nocebo’ subverts the wicked nanny subgenre with a haunting horror story with a ruthless, relevant message.
“I am here with you.”
There are few bonds that are more innate and eternal than those between family. These fundamental connections can push the most ordinary of individuals to do impossible things. Parenthood–whether it’s the stresses that surround this responsibility or the idea that someone else doesn’t deserve it–is subject matter that frequently finds itself at the center of the horror genre. There is no shortage of evil nanny or creepy kid horror movies, but Lorcan Finnegan’s Nocebo strives for something more with this surreal, visceral Irish/Filipino hybrid horror story that contains some of the most haunting visuals of the year. It’s a powerful gut punch of a film that feels like M. Night Shyamalan’s Servant meets The Babadook meets Inside.

As we look out into the great black emptiness of space, we are reminded of the question posed by the Italian physicist, Enrico Fermi- “Where is everybody?” Is life as we understand it a freak chemical fluke, never to be repeated in all of the great cold infinity above us? Or is it in fact an inevitable outcome of a relatively common set of circumstances, resulting in a universe teeming with life and civilisations, and if so, will we ever get to meet them?
And if and when we do encounter life that evolved under another sun, with intelligence different, yet equal to our own, how do we kill it?
Yes, some films tell us that when we encounter new life and civilizations they’ll heal our wounds with magic glowing fingers, teach us that nuclear war is bad, and misunderstand our local customs in a delightful and heartwarming way.

Lorcan Finnegan's "Vivarium" is a trippy, frightening, disorienting sci-fi film anchored by Imogen Poots and Jesse Eisenberg's stellar performances as Gemma and Tom, respectively. Gemma is a schoolteacher, and Tom is a handyman. "Vivarium" begins with the couple visiting a local real estate office to buy an affordable house. The agent takes them to Yonder, a new development housing complex made up of identical homes. Within moments of seeing unit nine, the agent disappears. Gemma and Tom try to leave. But no matter where they go or what they do, they end up back at unit nine.
Containing elements of every science fiction subgenre under the sun -- including body horror, alien invasion, and time loops -- "Vivarium" might appear to be a hodgepodge of better films. However, its distinct visual style and frightening exploitation of ennui elevate it. With a dynamite Imogen Poots, "Vivarium" engages audiences with its existential questions and ending.

2019 sci-fi thriller "Vivarium" is one of those movies where the premise is interesting enough, but the execution is poor. The ending isn't really difficult to understand, but it does warrant some examination if only because humans are compelled to find meaning in all things, even if those things are ham-fisted sci-fi movies.
In "Vivarium," Tom (Jesse Eisenberg) and Gemma (Imogen Poots) are a young couple with no chemistry whatsoever. In hopes of buying a home, they're lured into a hideous suburban neighborhood by Martin, the world's worst real estate agent. The subdivision is called "Yonder," and it's made up of a seemingly infinite number of hideous green prefab...

A truly odd take on The Stepford Wives with a nod to Patrick McGoohan’s Orwellian mind game The Prisoner, Lorcan Finnegan’s 2019 science fiction film is a mix of horror, paranoia and sardonic humor about the travails of suburban life. Imogen Poots and Jesse Eisenberg play the unfortunate couple searching for their dream home only to find a bona fide nightmare.

Another Round (Thomas Vinterberg)
Superlatives are fatuous, but Mads Mikkelsen’s final dance in Another Round was possibly one of the finest scenes of the year. It is here that Thomas Vinterberg tips his hand: in turns devastating and rambunctious, his latest neither glorifies nor condemns the magic––and sorrows––of day-drinking, but conjures a surprisingly sober study of a midlife crisis, climaxing in this moment of blissful catharsis. As a character-defining moment, it’s up there with Denis Lavant’s pirouettes at the end of Claire Denis’ Beau Travail. – Leonardo G.

I can’t tell you how many times a friend has come up to me with a story that positions their significant other as the proverbial albatross around their neck with a look that screams, “Amirite?” only to have me shrug, smile, and reply, “I don’t know. I actually like my partner.” I only partially say this in jest because I do hope they’ll hear those words and rethink their situation—their refusal to acknowledge their own part in their problems, the possibility that their relationship isn’t working, or whatever else. That this desire to undercut and blame the people we love as being the constant source of our unhappiness has become the norm is a perfect example of social conditioning gone wrong. We are allowed to be happy.

Eva Green, Mark Strong and Chai Fonacier have boarded “Vivarium” director Lorcan Finnegan’s psychological thriller “Nocebo,” which is now in production in Ireland.
The film, which marks the first co-production between Ireland and the Philippines, follows a fashion designer (Green) suffering from a mysterious illness that puzzles her doctors and frustrates her husband (Strong) until help arrives in the form of a Filipino carer (Fonacier), who uses traditional folk healing to reveal a horrifying truth.
Set between London and Manila, the film’s themes explore consumerism, human exploitation and the fast fashion industry, as well as the brain’s power in deciding whether to harm or cure the physical body. “Nocebo” is the antonym of “placebo,” and refers to the Nocebo Effect, in which negative thinking on the part of a patient results in a more negative outcome.
