Their Best Premiere Since - and Reminiscent of - True Detective
richardboyd13 January 2020
Especially when it comes to crime dramas, I am quite hard to please. Some have even said impossible. Any seemingly insignificant issue can make it unwatchable (e.g. an unrealistic or obvious solution, poor acting, cinematography that detracts from the show's atmosphere, etc). In 2019, only the Netflix series "Unbelievable" truly managed to satisfy me - as far as crime series go. Life is short. Why should I waste time watching something I don't enjoy?

This series managed to keep me totally enthralled, throughout both episodes of the premiere. I had planned to work on an essay, while I watched; but I hadn't even written a word, and all of a sudden, the credits were rolling. Where the time went, I can't say - what I can say is that I frantically searched for the remote to start the next episode. I couldn't even wait ten seconds for it to start, automatically.

It's similar enough to other crime shows to attract veterans of the genre, but also unique enough to stand out. It begins - as most crime shows do - with a body being found, then they show us the detective, and a possible suspect; if you've seen the genre, you know the formula. Where it differs - as all good crime series do - is the execution.

There is enough evidence to put the suspect into jail, immediately; they found dozens of fingerprints (more than could be planted), clear security footage, a matching blood-type, and three witnesses who not only already knew him, confidently identified him, and saw him covered in blood, but also spoke with him - while he was covered in blood. It seems like an open-and-shut case, even to the lead detective - who has known the suspect for years.

But - like anything that seems too good to be true - it couldn't be. Their suspect was recorded on video, at a conference more than 70 miles away, at the time of the murder. Not only did the shop-owner at the hotel identify him, but his fingerprints were found on a book he examined, and his colleagues who were also in attendance supported his claim. For every piece of evidence found by the police, there was more that proved his innocence.

I was going to say that this review included spoilers, but I suppose nothing I wrote could really be considered a "spoiler". Anyone who has seen the trailer, will know most of this information, and - truth be told - the first episode is essentially an extended version of the trailer. Yet, all the little details that were left out of the trailer are what make the circumstances even more mysterious.

Anyway, I would recommend it.

Up for De-Bateman

Stephen King's renaissance continues with this adaptation of another of his more recent novels (that I have to admit I've not read yet). HBO have quickly produced this adaptation, and judging by the starry cast are eager to make this their latest prestige drama.

When the mutilated body of a young boy is found on the outskirts of a small American town. It appears to be an open and shut case for Detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn). Several eye witnesses place the local youth baseball coach Terry Maitland (Jason Bateman) at the scene, covered in blood. Forensic testimony and CCTV also show Maitland and his actions following the crime. Emotions are high in the town, and only heightened when Anderson has Maitland arrested during a little league game. However, conflicting TV footage emerges that shows Maitland out of state at a conference at exactly the same time.

Initially I'm not sure whether were looking at a paranormal elements to the story, or more of a "worst of humanity" type story. My current guess is more towards that paranormal aspect, and something has made itself look like Maitland to convince the victim that it was safe to go with him, I'm not sure that's much of a revelation, as I suspect whatever it was in that scene outside the Maitland's house whilst the police were serving their warrant.

I've seen some criticism of the show as being slow, but I'm not sure I agree with that. I thought that, particularly for a first episode, it was worth spending some getting to know the characters. Understanding, for example, Anderson's anger at Maitland is because of the death of his own child before this story started. That depth also lets us spend time with the actors and when they're Ben Mendelsohn, Jeremy Bobb, Paddy Considine and Mare Winningham that's a great thing. I liked the time jumping around a little, to unveil the story in stages as a gimmick too.

Though I'm a little concerned that this is going to end up being typical "King" - an alien that turns into a Spider - for the time being, I like what we've seen.

Holly Gibney

Warning: Spoilers
Why would they change Holly? She is supposed to be the same as The Mr.Mercedes Holly. So far the show is great but they should have used the same actress for Holly which is why I give it an 8.

Taut but...
prcmd7 February 2020
Contradictory and confusing evidence causes the local Georgia police force wonder if the murderer of a boy was really the baseball coach. And I wonder if The Outsider is going to be a straight police procedural or a Stephen King-ish supernatural nightmare scenario. We know there's a slim green-hooded figure lurking in the background. More to follow.

Confused on the very high scoring
WiseTruthfulWords18 January 2020
Honest scoring 7.8

Don't get me wrong, the show seems promising. However, the overall scoring that is shown on imdb seems non genuine which worries me. I remember when Stephen King's Under the Dome Pilot was released on basic cable, it received a scoring in the range of 6.5. I personally was baffled when I saw those numbers back then and thought it should of been at least in the 8 category. Not even the first episode of X-Files or Twin Peaks received such high marks when it was released. This tells me that because this show is on HBO, its scoring is fraudulent to gain more paid subscribers for the channel/show.

Will give this Sci Fi mystery show a few more chances to see how it turns out.

Started well
nockd26 January 2020
I have watched the first 3 episodes and the first episode was excellent, but the next 2 have just been so slow with nothing happening and no real story on what's going on. I feel that they are just padding out a story that could have been great if over a shorter amount of episodes. I'll no doubt watch the next one and hope it ups the pace

Crime solving mystery thriller that delivers.
cruise0113 January 2020
3 out of 5 stars.

The Outsider builds a storytelling world from Stephen King. About Terry (Jason Batemen) who was seen through evidence that he murdered a child. While Terry was actually out on a business trip and has no clue on who this mysterious person that looks like him.

It is a slow moving direction. A little dull. The mystery in this story is worth watching as detectives are trying to investigate. And a mystery figure watching how this is playing out.

Decent cast so far.

Decent enough premiere, but..
LegendaryFang5631 July 2021
I don't feel like it fully captured my interest. It does have a level of intrigue, and I think that and the seemingly possible supernatural aspect, as well as the mystery behind it all, is the only thing it has going for it. That could change, of course, as there are ten episodes to the season which I think is a lot, given the premise. What could be revealed that would make that many episodes be/feel worthwhile in the end? I feel like things will needlessly drag on. For those who've read the novel, I'm sure this show will be a matter of whether or not it's a good adaptation. For those who haven't, it may feel too dragged out for a simple/not complex enough or lackluster explanation.
