I admit it, at this point, I am confused
AlsExGal28 August 2020
So many odd things in this episode. I like the three core actors and their characters, but this episode introduces characters who were like those in the old Twilight Zone TV show who looked and acted like department store mannequins - because they were - who believed they were actual people, plus some folks who look and act like the the villains in Deliverance.

But the main characters are confused, so I assume I am supposed to be confused too as they unravel the mystery. I don't know why other reviewers are saying they were bored, because I think the episode flowed well. I just keep telling myself that I was confused by the first three episodes of the recent Perry Mason HBO series, but then it all came together. Even if this series does not do the same, I still give this episode 7/10.

A mess
martinez-pipe25 August 2020
Just a mess, an enternainig mess. A clear let down after the first one. A LOT of plot holes, bad writing and confusing (not in the good way). Hoping it gets better for the next one or I'm bailing out.

Very Underwhelming
Uzer_error40424 August 2020
Man, I was fully on board with what this show had to offer. But what the heck is actually going on in this episode? It's confusing because nothing is explored or explained. I have no idea who these (...wizards? *shrug*) Are or what they want or why they want it. Nothing is clear and nothing is investigated.

An entire season took place in the span of 60 mins. I'm not kidding here.

This show has promised, but the pacing is too sporadic. Crucial plot points are completely glossed over or vaguely explained to the point of no matter at all. Don't even get me started on the magic here, which just sorta happens? I have no idea.

In essence, this episode could have been great if the pacing is fixed.

Predictable reviews
Alwnva31 August 2020
I'm not sure why I continue to use Imbd. The user reviews are race based. Just like with Watchmen if there are any hints of racism the reviewers pan the show. I will admit I was thrown off a bit by the twists and turns. But i signed on to be challenged a little. The acting continues to be amazing and the art direction is beautiful. I don't know much about the genre but 2 episodes isn't enough to say the show has no direction. I will give it time to develop because Jj Abrams is know for telling a complex story and making it pay off (Lost, Alias). People accept some of the racial aspects and just take the journey.

A boring Mess
saifeliya25 August 2020
Comparing to the first episode this one was definitely not as intense and I got bored during most of the times .. has a bit of AHS Apocalypse vibe but still boring nonetheless , I'll keep watching to see .

Can the bad reviews please hold on a sec?
stella_8127 August 2020
We are at the SECOND episode, whatever happened clearly didn't resolve any conflict, it probably just set things in motion. We barely have any piece of the puzzle, It's too early to judge. So chill.

The Descendant
southdavid2 September 2020
This episode really pulled the rug out from under me, as what I anticipated the show was going to be, going forward, was turned on its head during the second half. I'll come back to that.

Having arrived at Ardham Lodge, Atticus (Jonathan Majors) is destressed to discover that his companions, Leti (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) appear to have forgotten all about the events of the previous night. The group then begin to investigate the hunting lodge, and the wider surrounding village before Atticus meets the head of the Braithwhite clan, Samuel (Tony Goldwyn) and learns an interesting fact about his heritage.

So, I was anticipating that uncovering and defeating the secrets of the lodge would be the storyline for at least the remaining episodes of this season. The first half of the episode certainly seems to set us down that path as we discover the mystical powers of the building and meet a couple of the Braithwhite family. The episode even appears to present us with their internal conflicts to play with, over the course of the season - as well as establishing that there is danger in the woods and playing with the mystery of what happened to Atticus' father. Then, at around two thirds of the way through the episode, there appears to be some missing scenes and suddenly, the location of Montrose is revealed in a confusing scene and - without posting spoilers - all of what I assumed the rest of the season was going to be, is blown through in around twenty minutes. I'm not saying this inherently a bad thing, and I appreciate that the show's writers are pulling together a series of short stories into a bigger narrative - but I can't help but feel some regret that the secrets of Ardham Lodge aren't being slowly revealed to us. (I might be wrong, of course, and this was a dream/vision or whatever and we do end up back there - but at the moment it doesn't seem that way).

Aside from these plot issues. The episode was fine, performances were strong and the musical choices I enjoyed - particularly the totally idiosyncratic ones, like the Marilyn Manson song towards the end. What remains to be seen is whether the decisions of this episode are a masterstroke of plotting, or the beginning of the end for the show.

A little disjointed, but a whole lot of fun
tdk-jacob24 August 2020
This show continues to impress. This episode is a slight step down from the first but is still delivering the goods in the feel of adventure. It has its own twists and turns with more great acting from our leads abd more despicable villains who are nevertheless fun to watch opposite our heroes.

Clumbsey editing leads to disjointed episode
djlister-129281 September 2020
After a strong start to the series with its pilot, this episode unfortunately fails to keep up the momentum. Where as the first episode took it's time to build atmosphere and characters, while hinting at greater mysteries, this episode feels like it is rushing to get to the next story line, raising story beats and then immediately solving them, saping all tension and only raising further questions. There are some strange editing decisions here and overall it felt like this story could have used another episode to really build tension before it's climax. There are entire bridging conversations missing and characters seem to inexplicably change motivations, make irrational decisions or develop incredible insight without any explination, to simply move the plot forward. Teleportation is also an issue, with characters suddenly appearing in locations with no real explination as to how they got there. The show deserves to take its time and I think the disjointed nature of this episode is a product of clumsey editing rather than acting or its production value.

My god was this a step down
gakusei-3500624 August 2020
First episode moved fast but had potential. This episode felt like someone edited 3 loosely related episodes together and then smashed them with poor cgi and some of the worst pacing I've seen in tv

Weird and interesting direction.
cruise0129 August 2020
4.5 out of 5 stars.

Great second episode. Interesting and weird direction as the three characters discover something sinister in the mansion. A few wtf moments. This episode does have a lot for beginning of the series. And wonder what will come next. I did feel like the preaching song did feel odd for the direction it was giving.

Slowly Becoming like any Other HBO series...
DuskShadow24 August 2020
And no, that is NOT a good thing.

I was already skeptical from the get go as the amount of imagination to actually do something proper that involves Lovcraftian horror is usually lacking in most media. The show started out kinda good, but then the story gets muddles with additions of modern music that not only break the 4th wall, but just have no place in that time period of setting. PLEASE DONT be like all the other crummy shows on HBO over the last 10+ years. PLEASE DONT! I am so sick of being right and disappointed. lol

Not as good as the first episode
KookShanty24 August 2020
I loved episode one but this episode was just weird. Obviously the point was to make no sense but it wasn't very enjoyable to watch as it was just confusing scene after confusing scene, with no real plot. I hope this is just a dud episode and it will get back to what seemed to be a really cool series.

Excellently made TV Series

I'm going to ask the 64,000 pennies question; Are the bad reviews because racism? This show is very good, I can't think of any other reason for bashing the show.

Tone & Pacing
jeremyashlynwilliams24 August 2020
There were probably 3 episodes condensed into 1 here. It felt like watching a cutscene in a video game. Almost nothing landed with any effect. It simply was.

The best episode of the season
wolf_spirit8621 September 2020
It doesn't rehash anything. Everything is told very well. I had thought that this show would be my favorite and a smash hit. I was wrong and should have stopped here.

Someone please explain what this is about.
ekmohlin24 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Im really confused. Who were these people? How did they do "magic". Who was related to whom? What was the ceremony about and why did it go wrong (opening the garden of Eden - byt why?). What was that Order really about? Immortality - for all of them? Who was the pregnant black woman? God? Eve? How could Tic's father dig himself out of that cellar? How will the story continue - a new travel??? I just don't understand it. Lost.

There is a lot of background information missing, like you have to have read a lot of books to fill in the holes.

This was good
isaquepereirasantos24 August 2020
It was a frenetic episode, we had a lot more action than last episode, also we had a lot of elements that reminded Jordan Peele movies. I can't undertand the low reviews, this was better than a lot of thrillers movies.

This whitey is giving up
unitywithinme11 January 2022
After watching this episode I'm giving up on the series. It may get better as episodes go on but my gut says there's probably a good reason this show was cancelled after one season. Pity though, some great actors are involved. Oh well.

Subpar writing here
heatsink9824 August 2020
This series is looking more like a CW-level show and less like one that deserves the glowing 10/10 ratings that mysteriously appeared for the first episode. Pacing , style, and story depth/logic all need work.
