Episode 8

There has been obvious comparisons made with Quentin Tarantino.

I thought the final episode had a touch of David Lynch about it.

The finale was something different with humour, violence, betrayal and some shocks.

Roy the exchange policeman who was sent to Tokyo was not as dumb as he looked. In fact he knew some Japanese all along.

The rooftop Mexican standoff morphed into a symbolic dance. Originality and creativity.

Probably the best British drama of 2019.

The rooftop scene was too long
jkaki16 July 2020
I'm not going to be a spoiler by describing the scene, but half the reviewers have been writing about the rooftop scene, half of them praising it, half of them hating it. I guess I fall between the two sides. In a binational, bicultural series like this, a bit of Shakespeare and a bit of Noh might have been appropriate. But it went on too long, perhaps twice as long as it should have, which detracted from the art that the director and the actors were trying to get across.

An original and moving finale to a fine series. Gripping, funny, tragic and emotional. Brilliant TV on every level. Credit where it's due. Packed full of anti-heroes. Loved every minute of every episode. Sad that it has finished but very very satisfied. 👍👍👍

Great finish, love the dance

As with the rest of the series I suspect you'll either love this or be very frustrated - for me I loved the way they brought it all together and the B&W dance section was genuinely moving. Need more shows with this level of ambition.

Incredible.
Sleepin_Dragon16 August 2020
It took me an episode or two, but Giri/Haji has been a truly wonderful watch, the show gets the conclusion it genuinely deserved, it is wonderful.

I've watched it from the comfort of my living room, but I feel as though I've been to the cinema and watched a true blockbuster.

It is a terrific watch, it's exciting and dramatic, very cinematic in appearance and delivery, quite incredible.

We get a shock revelation, someone who appeared to be there only as a bit player, turns out to be rather more important, that's how a twist should be delivered.

The dance will have divided opinions, not the normal thing I'd enjoy, but it worked incredibly well because the characters were so big, so well drawn, they each deserved a moment, very nicely choreographed.

As much as I'd love more, I hope it's left at one awesome series, 10/10.

Stunning

This episode is so creative, it has really deep meaning and finish very logical. No typical happy end for main character, but for someone who less you expect. And the contemporary dance... The creators of this TV SHOW, you are the best. The idea of dance has so beautiful meaning, fit perfectly and done so well by actors.

S1: Solidly engaging crime drama, not always convincing, sometimes superficial, but works and adds the occasional flourish
bob the moo16 August 2020
A Japanese businessman murdered in London triggers a Yakuza gang war in Tokyo. Police officer Kenzo Mori is sent to London to return his brother Yuto to "justice" and stop the violence. Yuto was thought to be dead, and his disappearance had roots in previous gang violence. Kenzo travels to London under the guise of completing an exchange training program, but the clock is ticking for how long violence in both cities can be held back from overflowing.

By the time I watched this, I had seen lots of praise for this show and had gotten the idea it was an incredibly serious drama, deeply bedded in character and small moments. Not sure why I thought that - I guess anything that gets praise I assume must be deep maybe. There is a certain amount of this, but mostly Giri / Haji is a solid crime drama with plenty of incident, violence, twists and turns. It presents exaggerated thrills to keep the plot moving, often riding on convenience in the writing to keep things moving. It does work though, and what helps it is that it does put time into the characters. The mix with this side of the drama is not always seamless, but it does help the engagement that the characters have lives and consequences hanging over them.

The performances help this a lot. The characters are often exaggerated but the actors deliver them well, with a lot of quality from the leads and the support. The design of the show is effective too. At first I wondered if the cross-cultural element was simply going to be used to make it seem different, but it doesn't do this. Tokyo is not presented as the city of Akira as it often is, but more just a normal place with people living in it. The use of animation is a nice touch, and other flourishes in the delivery add to this (the flashback structure, the chapter titles, and best example of the rooftop sequence in the final episode).

It is a strong series, not perfect but with all the components working well together.

A somewhat disappointing finale.
bobmackey-5642823 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Having quite enjoyed this production over the first 7 episodes we awaited the final episode with enthusiasm. Everything proceeded well until the rooftop scene which it has to be said was a little farcical. Suddenly, unexpectedly, we morphed into what can only be described as a slow motion modern dance sequence. We frankly were astounded. It was totally unexpected and if this is what the director intended to be the reaction he succeeded. We found this to be completely incongruous and affected our overall enjoyment of the production. Odd. Very odd.

Strange ending to a great show
Hughmanity7 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Giri/Haji was a 10/10 for me until this episode that just got weird and went too far. The rooftop modern dance sequence was totally out of left field and an unnecessary and unwelcome attempt to, apparently, make the show more artistic than it needed or deserved to be. Norman suddenly showing up to save the day in Japan without any real explanation of how he found the women in distress was also a jump too far.

Why did these far fetched and nonsensical scenes need to be inserted into the show at this late date? It was doing just great without modern dance and Hail Mary plot devices.

All that said, still an overall excellent show and I wish it hadn't been cancelled.

From mediocre to terrible in 2 episodes
leointeriv16 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
What a terrible ending, the series went from regular to really bad in the last 2 episodes.

Apparently London cops are the most incompetent in the world starting with Sarah the blind (oh by the way it seems INTERPOL does not exist here), at some point a really theatrical scene occurs on a rooftop...what the hell was that.

Rodney and Yuto get away with murder and nobody gives a sheet about Ian murder, a gangster that killed dozens suddenly shows a good heart, etc. etc yikes!

Disappointing
