Innovative concept wasted

Such a beautiful concept to begin with the movie but later became an emotional Bollywood movie. Very sad to see a wasted opportunity by the story & direction team inspite of getting such talented actors !

A good attempt

Whenever we hear 'science-fiction', we assume it must be a Hollywood picture or anywhere from the west. Bollywood or Asian cinemas are just completely written off whenever it comes to this genre of movies.

Well maybe, this particular movie just might be the start towards a beginning. The concept is good, the dialogues are great, acting is top-notch. I mean, as an indian, aren't you interested in knowing about afterlife? It has been a hot topic since ages! Cinematography is maybe an area where lots of work can be done, because somehow if you see space movies like Interstellar or Gravity it feels like real space. But here something doesn't go good with our eyes !

People Who are hating it are pure Bollywood Haters or Indian Cinema Haters.

Its a high time to watch underrated Bollywood movies along with Masterpiece Malayalam movies Stop watching Telugu film and overrating it just bcoz of Baahubali

Innovative and path breaking!

Last week it was JL50 & now comes Cargo which is another step forward in the right direction. God bless the OTT platforms that came to the rescue of such innovative films. Cargo is unlike anything we have seen before & is the one of the most original films to come out of India. It has mythological/ philosophical undertones & is a pathbreaking cinema in the genre of science fiction.

Set in the outer space in 2027 the films deals with post death transition services (PDTS). The rakshasas have signed a peace treaty with the humans. Vikrant Massey plays a lonely demon named Prahastha who has the job to ensure smooth transitioning of dead humans into their next lives. He is shown to have spent many years as an astronaut. He finally gets an assistant in the form of Yuvishka (Shweta Tripathi) to realize soon that he was set to retire because his cargos had started repeating themselves. The movie talks about life & death. There are many deaths shown but all in a lighter vein.

Speaking of performances Vikrant Massey is excellent as usual effectively depicting the loneliness & frustration of his character. Shweta Tripathi is good as his assistant who starts loosing her healing powers. Nandu Madhav who plays their boss is effective. Konkana Sen Sharma has a nice cameo. Background score is strictly functional with a catchy tune that plays couple of times.

Arati Kadav makes an assuring debut & while she has to be applauded for bringing something so unique in this genre inspite of a tight budget, few characters/ locations & other limitations. The problem lies in the fact that the fim barely scratches the surface & lacks depth. It leaves you wanting for more & it also demands your patience because of its slow pace. Having said that the concept is so innovative that you cant help but congratulate the makers.

Watch the Trailer and stop right there because There isn't anything happening here. From the beginning scene, the writers were so excited about the idea that they kept pulling it till the end. This could have, I repeat, could have worked as a TV Series where they could explain all the unnecessary characteristics everyone has. A 'Different' Idea but a Horrible Execution of the 'Story'.

My first Indian sci-fi

"Cargo" is set in a near future in which, in the manner of the vampires in "True Blood", demons (of a rather more beneficial kind than those featuring in Western fiction) have revealed their existence to the world and found their place in society. Just like the Aces and Jokers in the "Wild Cards" novels, these demons have powers - some quite weak (such as being able to turn invisible by approximately 80%) but others very useful (healing, never having to sleep). Prahastha is a demon who for many decades has worked on a spaceship facilitating the 'transition' (read: reincarnation) of the newly-dead: when someone dies, they are transported to the spaceship where Prahastha uses a machine to heal any injuries, uses another machine to wipe their memories, and sends them on their new life-path. Used to his solitary existence, Prahastha's nose is put out of joint when ground control send Yuvishka, a female demon with healing powers and a taste for social media, to be his assistant.

I have never before seen an Indian sci-film so I was not sure what to expect from this. The film spaceship set - where all the action takes place - has a very rickety, "Blake's Seven"-type look to it, although as the ship is supposed to be on its last legs that may be intentional. But the special effects (there are not many; it is not that type of sci-fi film) also have a decidedly unsophisticated look to them. What is also very noticeable is that as Yuvishka, Shweta Tripathi has the only major female role in the film; indeed, there are hardly any other female speaking roles. There are several sequences showing how the newly-dead died, but even these are almost all men - women feature only as part of groups. Even the ground crew with whom the space-bound demons deal are exclusively male (which makes it especially ironic that one of that crew tells Prahastha how women are outstripping men: "When men get to the moon, women are already on Mars. When men get to Mars, the women have gone on to Jupiter!") As for the acting, Vikrant Massey as Prahastha is nicely subtle. Tripathi I was less impressed with: admittedly her character means she has to be more 'in-your-face', but I felt her performance on occasion slipped into inappropriate melodrama. My favourite was Nandu Madhav as the demons' kindly and gossipy main ground contact.

Overall this was an interesting and inventive film, most obviously sci-fi/fantasy but with elements of drama and a touch or two of outright comedy. It was not without flaws and I would not pay to see it again, but if it is on television I may well sit down to watch. Seen as part of the London Indian Film Festival 2020.

Boring and Hollow

Sat to watch with high expectations but throughly disappointed. Pace is very slow with nothing happening as the minutes pass. After one hour was feeling restless as to when it will end. Not recommended.

Surprised at the negative reviews

This film is an original film. It has a new and path breaking script Indian cinema is finally taking baby steps into the world of science fiction. This movie deserves the applause for being a new and original Idea. Many more filmmakers will then attempt this genre. Don't write something off. People rate Salman Khan's brainless films higher than this and they don't understand the impact of original cinema. This is not a perfect film but it is a brilliant film.

Different and Interesting - must watch!

The plot of this movie is a little different and might not be liked by everyone. So a rating of 5 suggests that. But the movie is actually good. It fantasies a bit of what happens after a person dies and under what different circumstances a life is lost. How a soul after dying reacts. People talking about experience of talking to dead people. So an out of the box concept. Acting done by Vikrant and Shweta is good. This is definitely a must watch to get a feel of a different genre of movies. A bit of emotions, truth and fantasy.

Unique concept but boring none the less

Cargo dwells in the bridge between death and reincarnation. The concept might be novel but the lack of solid plot makes this film a snoozefest.

But having said that, this film is perhaps a unique take on the genre. We don't see much content in this genre.

With not so strong performances by the actors, it feels like another hit and miss to really impress the audience.

The only thing worth watching is its concept. Apart from that the film has nothing else to offer.

If you are really into slow movies then go ahead, otherwise just reading the plot somewhere is enough.

Great effort and appreciable by right audience

Audience expectations make or break a movie's experience. Cargo is a very slow paced bollywood space movie.You will be dissappointed if you are expecting a high budget space action film. This movie is all about the exceptional original storyline and the amazing acting by Vikrant Massey and Swetha Tripathi. It has low-budget props and graphics, characteristic of an experimental movie. It is definitely the best bollywood space movie so far ( given that we dont have many ) and the effort is appreciable. The movie is worth a one time watch for an audience who can appreciate slower movies. The story and lore should have recieved a more detailed explaination. Hopefully this movie becomes a cult classic predessesor of future bollywood space movies.

Cheapest Version of any SCI-FI movie I have ever seen by Indian Cinema

Seeing Vikrant in Movie to be honest I decided to watch this film, but I am so sorry to write here that its absolutely senseless Concept or rather story as I cant even call it as a concept. The movie talks about after life transition, but doesnt show a single example of the same like what happens when someone enters in Pushpak, when they are transitioned back ? What I assume is, it is a total stolen concept from UPLOAD series which was coated with this stupid story. Theory of After life is very good concept and this story/ flim does not even stand near by it. Vikrant is really a very good actor and should be thoughtful before choosing films in future. P.S: I have specially created my IMDB account to write a review here. so you can imagine how disappointed I am!!!

An expansive story was a possibility or a noir emotion churn personal journey was possible. It's good enough but could have been great. 6 stars for my favourites - Vikrant Massey & Shweta Tripathi & a cool concept.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Fikar not. We finally have answer to the 'After life' theory - What happens to humans after they pass away??

Seems there is no after-life at all. No heaven or hell to worry about.

Once you die on planet earth, you just get transported to a spaceship hovering some 35,000 kms away; You are welcomed on board by two docile astronauts who cordially inform you that you are dead. Then after taking your finger prints (probably to delink your Aadhar card down here!!!), you are nicely escorted to a cell where they heal your injuries and body marks, then erase your memory and extract you back in to your next life. So very easy peasy, isnt it?!!

Cargo, the latest sci-fi film on Netflix, has an interesting concept and probably may have sounded great on paper but unfortunately, has translated in to a dull and amateurish endeavour which feels a drag even at just one hour fifty minutes of its run time.

Truly, there is nothing and absolutely nothing beyond its core concept. All you get to see for close to two hours are some random people dying in our world, arriving at the spaceship and going through the aforementioned punar janam process. This goes on and on and on...

The two astronauts, Vikrant Massey and Shweta Tripathi, both fantastic actors, just go through the motions with zero chemistry between them. The screenplay is to be blamed here!!

As for the spaceship and its interiors obviously inspired by 2001 A Space Odyssey (1968), it is disheartening to see that we are still (in 2020) unable to match the greatness that the legendary Stanley Kubrick could achieve in 1968. Sad!!

Reincarnation.

Cargo is a Soulful drama movie with SciFi elements. The concept is very unique one based on Life after death. Cleverly written based on Incarnation in Hindu mythology. Apart from SciFi drama..it offers humour with Emotional moments and Some awakening topics. The movie is a slow paced one. Screenplay is lagging in few scenes. Preclimax and climax are good Performances are neat. Production values are good. Art work stands out. There is no much scope for other technical departments. Watch it.

A stunning, intimate, epic science fiction film from India!

There are two gut-punch shocks that you get in the first few minutes of watching the film Cargo. One is that this film exists. Two that it took so long for India to come up with an authentic science fiction film that does not rely on Hollywood for its ideas. And man does this film have ideas! Death and the afterlife! The indian concept of rebirth taken to a galactic scale! But it is also just the story of a lonely man connecting with another person and finally making a change in his life. Two people wait on a spaceship for the dead of the world to arrive. And we see glimpses of the recently deceased just before they die. I hope people discover the film Cargo the way I did, with no idea what it's about. Even the synopsis gives away too much detail. Surfeit it to say, the director Arati Kadav has created an entire philosophy and created a rich unique world filled with details that I think I will notice when I rewatch the film. The cinematography is beautiful, the sets feel original, and a special mention for the music that is gleefully happy one second and sorrowfully sad the next. The actors are really good with Vikrant Massey bringing a sense of gravitas to the role of lonely man filled with pain. You can feel his soul in the film, especially in a moment in the climax which culminates his and the story's end. This is an actor that has just gone from strength to strength from Death in Gunj to Mirzapur. Here he seems to have come into his own. A chunk of the film is just him on a spaceship by himself, and he keeps you riveted. Nandu Madhav is the film's version of HAL, a simple middle class man who we only see on the tv screen managing our two characters. In the screening I attended, he brought the house down with his dialogues. But the movie is truly unique because of what it is: an authentic original science fiction from a country that should be making many more such films. May we see many more of its kind.

Cargo Is An Original Film Of Netflix Whose Story Follows The Life After Death And Transition To A New Life Tbh This Plot Has Been Never Touched In Bollywood And As Of The First Attempt Its A Praise Worthy Job Story Have Details And Written Well With Indian Mythological Reference Which Will Keep Your Interest Tied Up It Has A Love Story A Innocence And Good VFX The Set Design Is On Point But The Music Doesn't Hook Me And Its Forgettable The Screenplay Is A Bit Slow and limited The Direction And Performance Is Good If There Is Vikrant Massey And Shweta Triparhi What More Can You Expect Its Produced By Anurag Kashyap Final Words In The Last I Can Say If You Want To Watch Something Unique And Have Patience Then You Can Go For It Ratings I Don't Rate Me I Just Enjoy Them.

Has a cool premise but nothing exciting is done with it.

I remember hearing about Cargo at some film festivals and since I love the sci-fi genre I decided to see what India can do with it.

Cargo follows Prahastha, an isolated astronaut who readies dead people for reincarnation and is soon joined by his assistant, Yuvishka, who helps him with his job.

What I liked about this film was just how different it was compared to other Bollywood films. It's refreshing to see something new and unique come from the Hindi film industry but at the same time, Cargo is barely interesting. Writer-director Arati Kadav presents us with an idea that could have went in many directions but sadly she doesn't do much with it. The film tries convey messages like loneliness but Kadav barely scratches the surface with these themes. A great sci-fi film that explores loneliness brilliantly is Moon starring Sam Rockwell which I urge people to watch. On top of that, Cargo moves at a very sluggish pace which makes the film feel even more boring.

Now I know this film was made on a shoestring budget and they did try to make this film look good but unfortunately it still looked quite cheap. The shots of the spaceship looked quite fake and parts of the interior didn't look very good either. The performances were good. Vikrant Massey and Shweta Tripathi do a decent job but the characters aren't explored enough and because of that I didn't feel emotionally connected to them.

Arati Kadav has conceived an interesting premise but she wasn't able to do anything exciting with it. It moved way too slowly and failed to explore its ideas to its full extent. I would suggest skipping out on this one.

Cargo Is Grandiose In Concept

Though India has done very well by harnessing the space technology for national development, the concept of space drama is still alien to the Indian cinema. When we see a Hollywood sci-fi films, we always observe aliens, wormholes or spaceship wars but Arati Kadav's Cargo is much more than that.

Cargo (parcel addressed as deceased body in the film) tells the story of re-incarnation program launched by a Inter-Planetary Space Organisation (IPSO) company where 'rakshasa' called Prahastha (Vikrant Massey) performs a rebirth of recently deceased people through PDTS (Post Death Transition Services) in one of their spaceships Pushpak 634-A. As Prahastha feels burdened by hectic job, the company sends him a young and energetic Yuvishka (Shweta Tripathi).

If you have seen Sam Rockwell's sci-fi Hollywood drama, Moon (2009), you will be able to relate to Cargo where the protagonist lives a space life in isolation. As we begin our space journey in Arati Kadav's Cargo, we are introduced to the concept of Yamraaj, the God of death according to Hindu mythology and how this concept is translated into idea and finally into a space company IPSO which have expanded with their fleet of spaceships. We are also seeing the isolated life of Prahastha who diligently performs his duty and yet frustrated and unsatisfied. As Yuvishka enters as his assistant, Cargo gets more interesting as Yuvishka brings her own style and superpower (every space attendant has a superpower).

While first half is interesting as we see innumerable and funny scenes with deceased people being transitioned into a new life, the second half drags until the final days of Prahastha in the spaceship. Though am missing watching movies in theaters, am liking the genuine concept and innovative story line of Indian films on OTT. Last week, Malayalam film C U Soon and now Cargo shows the changing trend of Indian Cinema. While Bollywood films have attempted sci-fi genre like Koi..Mil Gaya (remake of E.T) and Mission Mangal, Cargo is probably the first attempt that deep-dives into a individua life in a spaceship. Hats off to the writer and director Arati Kadav for trying out something new which is thought provoking, touching on the issues of ethics, human identity and compassion.

Having said that Cargo does have it share of flaws as well. How a deceased person is able to interact with Prahastha and Yuvishka and how are they transitioned into a rebirth have not been explained. Though the idea of reincarnation is good, execution part fails in the film as the space drama slows down the momentum it builds in the initial reel due to poor editing. Nevertheless, technically Cargo is a treat to watch with fantastic art direction and beautiful cinematography as you get to experience the life inside a spaceship. Background score gels well with the film.

Cargo belongs to both Vikrant Massey and Shweta Tripathi for wonderful acting. Vikrant Massey impresses with his natural performance as he transforms from no-nonsense strict character into a more fun loving colleague. Shweta Triptahi brings in more energy with her spontaneity. I liked Nandu Madhav and Biswapati Sarkar in their respective parts as well.

Overall, Cargo should be applauded for its innovative and unique concept which has never been attempted by Bollywood folks. The film might be a trend setter for the future space drama in Bollywood. Go for it 3/5

For me this Experimental Sci-Fi is good.

I don't know why people's giving this movie a bad review. I mean it's not that bad too. Although some scenes were not good ike their items & Dressing of dead people's. But it was good. Acting was good. Direction was good.

I know it's not typical bollywood film (Masala, Sci-Fi genre which we saw in hollywood) but in india this experimental thing is wrong because of small budget and all.

Wasted Opportunity / 2 Stars

Cargo, produced like a skit on a low budget, is a snoozefest that is not clear about its objective. It starts off with an aspiration to be a sci-fi drama about loneliness in the space where the protagonist (Vikrant Massey), a staff at an imaginary post-death transition services agency, has been spending decades and working solo in a breathing spacecraft named Pushkar-something without much contact with the outer world. Then it aims higher and brings in another character (Shweta Tripathi) and scrambles to turn itself into an emotional story about companionship and how ignorance is not always bliss. Without enough background to the story, the plot (where dead people are sent to this transition agency and then sent back home as a new person in optionally some other form) - which is quite zany, to be fair to writer-director Arati Kadav - does not explain things that are essential for its upkeep and interest and just fumbles every now and then until one of the three main characters utters a few words of philosophy and/or existentialism while sipping cola from a Styrofoam cup. I understand the restrictions low budget can put on the production but watching Cargo reminded me of those substandard comedy skits that they play on Indian national television during primetime with canned laughter in the form of a human being as its main character. Even the spacesuits look like they were made out of bed sheets. That skilled actors like Massey and Tripathi are not utilized well shows the additional lack of efforts put in the writing and the direction. Nothing gels in the avant-garde hopeful that this film turns out to be but falls extremely short of every single ingredient except for maybe the score. Watch the HBO drama Six Feet Under (2001) and space stuff Gravity (2013) again and forget that Cargo even existed and that Vikramaditya Motwane or Anurag Kashyap helped produce this technical drivel for laymen. TN.

slow but worth it

I watched it on Netflix with English subtitles and sometimes they were too fast which didn't allow me to completely appreciate the environment created in the movie. They mixed technology with theism and built a world were both openly exist (without vampire-magician-ware-wolf-super power characters). Just normal life with normal worries and ambitions. At the end, humans behave the same wherever they are.
