Payback and revenge on Halloween, and man in the box is a golden help!
blanbrn14 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This episode 3 from the "Shudder" series "Creepshow" featured two good tales both held interest and had suspense, drama, and payback like twist as it held true to the old E.C. comics spin.

First up is "All Hallows Eve" which is a tale about a group of modern day teens who on "Halloween" go on a search for someone who did something to a member and friend of their little group. As it turns paybacks burn and are hell to pay!

Last and really well done in a clever tale called "The Man in the Suitcase" involves a young man who after landing at an airport picks up the wrong suitcase by mistake. Only this turns out to be a pot of gold. And this young man needs it as he's strapped cash wise, as soon seen after the suitcase is opened up and with the little magic man of gold in it, things start to be taken for granted and abused. Soon this young man is double crossed by his friend and sexy black bra wearing girlfriend. Only coin spinner has the last laugh as his powers can destroy those who abuse things as his magic can be evil! Overall well done tales of revenge with clever and nice revenge twist!

I liked both.

This was another twofer that had two very different tones. And is why I love anthologies so much. Two great stories. First one more serious, second one more comical.

Like with Grey Matter/The House of the Head, I feel like "All Hallow's Eve" wasn't Creepshow material, where as "The Man in the Suitcase" was perfect and the only short in the first season to do the "creepshow" Romero color effect PROPERLY. Though unlike Episode one, I enjoyed both of these stories as a whole and this was by far the best episode in my opinion.

First story is about revenge, and is a great mystery that most won't figure out until it's halfway through and it feels rewarding when revealed. Everything was acted wall, especially with the amount of child actors in this short, none from what I can remember felt hammy. It's a very straight/dramatic piece. I'd probably give it a 9/10 for this short alone.

The second short, MAN, another great mystery with a fun twist at the end and a very very clever end joke/callback. This was more comedic and absurdist and was by far the MOST respectable and faithful CREEPSHOW short I've seen in Season 1. Down to the use of gels on the light and comic book trope effect, being used perfectly. This was more of an 8/10. A very fun short. First one was a good story told in a short timeframe, and was serious. The second one was like a perfect palate cleanser to wash away the rich dowerness of the first short.

2 good stories but...

First story suffers from bad acting all around. Second story is more watchable in that regard. Both have satisfying conclusion, though i wish the production was better because this series has so many good ideas.

Creepy, Imaginative, and very, very funny.

"The Man In The Suitcase" takes the prize here; a bizarre storyline mixes disturbing visuals with some extremely witty dialogue. Anyone familiar with writer Christopher Buehlman's excellent horror novels will recognize his signature chess-move comedic exchanges and ironic twists. Don't miss this one.

Very good, but I saw the first story already.

The man in the suitcase is great fun, and done well, as is all Hallow's eve, which was written for Issue 1 of Twisted Tales in the 80's, glad they are borrowing from this.

A solid pair of stories.

Warning: Spoilers
'All Hallow's Eve'. Written by Bruce Jones, and directed by John Harrison. A group of over-age trick-or-treaters go through their neighborhood, but their *real* purpose involves something far more serious than acquiring candy. And you can tell: the adults to whose doors they come are VERY nervous to see them. This turned out to be a pretty straightforward story, albeit with appealing performances by the kids, good atmosphere, and some effective shocks (such as what Skeeter looks like under his ghost sheet). But, really, the main hook for this segment was the chemistry between the principal actors. The story may not be terribly surprising in the end, but it does deliver some satisfaction as "just desserts" are dispensed.

'The Man in the Suitcase'. Written by Christopher Buehlman, and directed by David Bruckner. An aimless young man (Will Kindrachuk) returns from a trip, picks up a suitcase at the airport, and realizes, once home, that yes, there really is a man (Ravi Naidu) stuffed into the suitcase. The young mans' intentions are initially decent - helping the victim get out of there - but he, his ex-girlfriend (Madison Bailey), and roommate (Ian Gregg) are overcome by greed once they realize that the man produces extremely valuable gold coins (out of his mouth) when in severe pain. And only Kindrachuck suffers conscience pangs about the situation, as the three of them have been torturing the suitcase man for an extended period of time. This was a rather nifty premise given darkly humorous treatment by the writer & director, and, just like the segment before it, is satisfying in the end because you just KNOW that these cretins are really going to GET IT.

Overall, a bit of an improvement over the first two episodes.

Eight out of 10.

Cringy
kevincialuberger19 May 2020
All Hallows Eve is cringy and I almost want to fast forward. Not sure if King wrote this one but I doubt it. The kids are unbelievable and not very scary to "terrorize an entire town". I'm watching a woman w a shotgun, why doesn't she just shoot them all, they're in her house? Skipped

Some ingenuity here at least

This was better that E1-2. But the reason this first segment worked initially is also ruined by the reveal. In what world do kids kill other kids for being kind of nerdy? This wasn't set in the 70s. Everyone these days likes LotR, plays games, and has mind numbing hobbies. It made no sense, and we knew the gang was dead when we met the ghost that didn't talk. I've seen enough horror to know the ending right away but how it ended was still a letdown because it strained credibility. The second story was fun, and weird, and had some great effects, but was hampered by some poor acting (again) and while watching kids be cruel is a staple of this genre, it didn't work because... somehow... a whole airport is on on it too? Um, sure.

Ghoul-kids vs. Snakeman and his gold diggers
Coventry4 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I find it somewhat bizarre that this "Creepshow"-episode is the highest rated of the entire first season, whilst I personally think it's the weakest one. In the four episodes I watched thus far, there's always one really good segment and one slightly above average segment. In my humble opinion, this episode exists of two average ones. "All Hallow's Eve" is very appealing to horror fanatics, since it deals with trick-or-treating and kids in spooky Halloween costumes. However, the plot is derivative and, despite the initial efforts to remain mysterious for as long as possible, it quickly (and predictably) turns into a textbook revenge-from-beyond-the-grave tale. A few nifty jump-moments and a good climax are the elements worth mentioning here. "The Man in the Suitcase" is creative, to say the least, but far too random and absurd to qualify as horrific or even remotely unsettling. Correct me if I'm wrong, but any series in a show called "Creepshow" should at least try to be creepy, no? Plus, and this bothered me even more, is that dull morals like "greed is bad" are shoved down our throats. A weak episode, altogether.
