There has been much pessimism floating around regarding this past weekend's box office. I myself have tossed some of that pessimism into the void. Much of that has to do with the fact that the summer movie season kicked off with "The Fall Guy" opening to a wildly disappointing $28.5 million, marking the worst start to summer in more than 20 years. Far less ink has been spilled regarding Sony's new horror movie "Tarot," which also opened over the weekend and snuck into the top five on the domestic charts with a $6.5 million debut. At first glance, it's not a good look for a movie from a major studio opening on more than 3,100 screens across North America. However, this might actually end up being a sneaky little hit.
"Tarot" also pulled in $3.7 million internationally, giving it a $10.2 million global start. Again, that number isn't going to break any records. It's not...

Madison Beer has dropped a new single, “Make You Mine.” The sultry pop track is the singer’s first new music since the release of her sophomore LP, Silence Between Songs. It sees Beer voicing words of desire over a soaring melody as she croons, “I wanna feel, wanna taste, wanna get you going.”
“Its Outttttt !!!!!!!!” Beer wrote on X. “go stream go love go dance <3 i lll be doin the same.”

When LGBTQ community-gathering spaces were largely put on pause by the pandemic, those once-in-person safe havens became our streaming platforms and technical devices at home. Hyper-specific pop subcultures emerged — here’s looking at you, queer readers of the generally awful “Friends” — and reputations for streamers’ philosophies toward and commitment to LGBTQ content were widely discussed online. (Shout out to Showtime: the premium cable network still servicing lesbians everywhere.)
Even as the world has opened back up, in Hollywood, it feels like queer storytelling and community are more galvanized than ever. Nowhere is that more tidily displayed than on the carousels of “LGBTQ” offerings found across entertainment platforms. There’s no shortage of movies to stream on Netflix. Any subscriber that logs onto the platform these days will likely see a bunch of new releases, gruesome horror films, and sweet rom-coms. But with so many big, flashy studio films and Netflix originals to choose from, it can be difficult for the indie films that flood the streamer to stand out.
For sure, a place in Netflix’s library can be a great opportunity for independent cinema to find an audience it otherwise wouldn’t reach in theaters or on television. But for all the big starry auteur films that Netflix picks up and turns into major awards contenders (see “Marriage Story” or “I’m Thinking of Ending Things”), there’s an under-the-radar, overlooked pick that doesn’t have the names or prestige attached to it, and feels destined to serve as mere library filler as people look for the films they do know.

Madison Beer stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live to perform her recent single “Sweet Relief.” The singer took the late-night stage in a silver glitter dress, where she showcased the sultry song on an eery playground set alongside her live band.
“Sweet Relief” appears on Beer’s recent album Silence Between Songs, released earlier this fall. Last month, she shared a music video for the track, which evoked the ethos of the MySpace era.
Beer recently spoke to Rolling Stone about the album, reflecting on younger versions of herself and how much she’s changed.

Madison Beer is more than ready to open up. From the moment I ask a question from inside a karaoke room at a club event for Las Vegas's Jbl Fest, she's prepared to tell the truth. "[I'm someone who was subject to] massive amounts of online hatred and bullying, and to people constantly perceiving and having opinions about me," she tells Popsugar. "That's been very hard at times."
When it comes to the internet, which she calls "f*cking terrifying," she wishes there was more accountability for the kind of cyberbullies that came after her so intensely during the early years of her career. "There should be actual consequences for that. I would love to see something implemented where, actually, no, you can't just hide behind an account and be horrifically mean to people and cost people their lives sometimes. Maybe a system that finds these people and holds them accountable,...

Singer Madison Beer has been in the spotlight since she was barely a teenager when Justin Bieber found her YouTube covers and signed her to the same record label as him. But just because she's famous doesn't mean she was able to avoid the messiness of dating as a teenager. We've all been there, but she's had to go through all of it in the public eye. Like most young people, she's had a few relationships, some of which ended because of some pretty serious stuff, while others naturally ended like many relationships do.
In 2020, though, Beer began dating TikToker Nick Austin, and things seem to still be going strong between them. The 24-year-old star has also had a creatively fruitful past few years - she published her memoir "The Half of It" in April 2022, and her second studio album, "Silence Between Songs," drops on Sept. 15. While Hollywood still has a long way to go in supporting queer stories and storytellers, we’re living in a relative golden age of LGBTQ cinema compared to what has come before. Netflix has not always chosen to support the LGBTQ community in their business decisions, but the streamer has played a major role in increasing the visibility of queer characters and storylines in both film and TV, and in supporting queer creators in telling stories.
As we celebrate Pride month and beyond, let’s take a look at some of the best LGBTQ movies Netflix currently has on offer. If you’re looking for a queer film to watch—satirically funny or devastatingly earnest, heart-stoppingly romantic or casually queer—try one of the many excellent and diverse options below.

Box office preview: ‘The Flash,’ ‘Elemental,’ ‘The Blackening’ will keep the summer movie love going
After strong releases to kick off the month of June, three more wide releases will try to split up any potential business to give the summer box office a boost. This weekend should also benefit from Father’s Day on Sunday and the Juneteenth government holiday on Monday. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The widest release of the weekend is Warner Bros’ “The Flash,” starring Ezra Miller and more, which ties some of Zack Snyder‘s Dceu movies into the upcoming plans by James Gunn, or so it’s been said. The movie has been plagued with problems almost going back to Miller’s casting for Snyder’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” in 2016, which includes various writers and directors coming on board and then leaving. The movie was also delayed a few times due to Covid, and then last year, Miller (who uses they...

Elemental — Pixar’s 27th film, and the first to feature star-crossed lovers that literally become steamy when they kiss — forces you to answer a lot of questions right off the bat. Can a young man made entirely out of liquid ever find true romance with a fiery young woman? Could a metropolis with a population comprised of the four natural elements function as an urban melting pot, with disparate and possibly destructive parties finding a way to live in perfect harmony? Must the children of first-generation immigrants be forever burdened...

Madison Beer sleeps best with the TV on at night. She needs things to be noisy enough that she doesn’t have the space to think. “I don’t like to be in the quiet,” she says. But with her new album, Silence Between Songs, out Sept. 15, Beer chose to do the opposite and really listen to herself.
“Those moments in between the noise is when you’re able to reflect,” she says. “I was able to look at things with a better perspective. That’s where these records came from.

In episode 11 of "Ted Lasso"'s third season, Ted (Jason Sudeikis) is surprised by a special house guest: his mom, Dottie Lasso. She appears totally unannounced in London and shadows her son throughout his day working at AFC Richmond. Eventually, the pair work out some of their long-standing issues, especially those around Ted's dad's death.
If you're an avid TV watcher, you might wonder where you recognize the actor who plays Ted's mom - Becky Ann Baker - from. The answer is a lot of places, since Becky Ann is an extremely prolific character actor. Two of her biggest roles were as Jean Weir on NBC's short-lived (but extremely beloved) teen comedy "Freaks and Geeks" and as Loreen Horvath - the mom to Lena Dunham's Hannah - on HBO's "Girls." She received an Emmy nomination in 2017 for her role on "Girls." But the 70-year-old actor has had smaller...

The 76th Cannes Film Festival announced this morning that its closing night film in, oh, just about five weeks will be Pixar’s latest innovative animated film, “Elemental.” The movie is directed by Peter Sohn, whose only other feature credit as director is 2015’s “The Good Dinosaur.” Sohn has been a part of Pixar, working in some capacity as an animator or story developer on most of their titles, going back to 2003. Job security at that shop!
“Elemental”’s premise is a forbidden love between anthropomorphic representations of Fire and Water in Element City. How this will make any kind of logical sense is beyond me, but have you seen how much money the “Cars” franchise has earned? I think it’s best not to worry too much about realism and, following water’s lead, go with the flow.

Recently, I had the chance to travel to San Francisco, where I was able to visit Pixar Animation Studios as they prepped for the theatrical release of their latest film, Elemental. Coming from The Good Dinosaur‘s Peter Sohn (who you may have heard as the voice of Sox the cat in Lightyear), the film takes place in Element City, a place where the four elements, water, earth, air, and fire, live in harmony – or close. The concept for this is pretty interesting, as the city is shown to be populated by residents who fall into each of the four elemental categories. It’s challenging to explain exactly what they are as they’re not “fire or water people” but rather individuals that are actually made of the element they represent. They interact with each other as such.
The city itself is a hopeful place where the elements live together,...

This summer, Pixar's new film "Elemental" (watch the new trailer here) will be the animation studio's first original film to get a wide theatrical release since "Onward" hit the big screen just before the coronavirus pandemic swept the globe. "Lightyear" was given a theatrical release last year, but it wasn't exactly a sensation, so we're overdue for some real Pixar magic.
Thankfully, after Disney and Pixar invited /Film and other members of the media to screen roughly 30 minutes of footage from "Elemental" during an early press event, I can tell you that this is a return to form for the animation studio. With the exception of "Wall-e," this feels like Pixar's first proper romantic comedy, giving us a charming meet-cute between a fire woman named Ember Lumen (Leah Lewis of "The Half of It") and a water man named Wade Ripple (Mamoudou Athie of "Jurassic World Dominion"). If 1996's "Twister" taught us anything, it's that storm chasing is not only exhilarating, but when things go wrong it makes for one hell of a natural disaster movie. In 2024, we'll be treated to "Twisters," the long-awaited follow-up to "Twister," which is looking to capitalize on the success of legacy sequels, similar to "Top Gun: Maverick." But before that disaster epic touches ground and lays waste to the box office, another group of reckless storm chasers, led by none other than Alec Baldwin, will be heading directly into the eye of the storm for our viewing pleasure.
"Supercell" is a disaster movie from director Herbert James Winterstern, previously known for his work on NBC's "Siberia." Disney’s Pixar today named the lead voice actors for its upcoming animated feature, Elemental. The film’s director Peter Sohn and producer Denise Ream, who previously collaborated on The Good Dinosaur, announced the castings, as they brought to the stage actors Mamoudou Athie (Jurassic World Dominion) and Leah Lewis (The Half of It).
Inspired by Sohn’s childhood in New York, Elemental journeys alongside an unlikely pair, Ember (Lewis) and Wade (Athie), in a city where fire, water, land and air-residents live together. The fiery young woman and the go-with-the-flow guy are about to discover something elemental: how much they actually have in common.
“The idea [for Elemental] started with my parents. As immigrants to the U.S. from Korea in the ’70s, they had no family, nothing. But they managed to create a life here in New York,” Sohn said in introducing the film. “And just like them, many...

If movies have taught us anything it’s that childhood is a magical time where, if you’re doing it right, you befriend space aliens, rescue orcas, inherit chocolate factories or play every sport imaginable with an omni-talented Olympian dog.
Or, if you’re more of the melancholic type, at least you find a dead body in the woods. That’s the bare minimum anyone can ask for.
James Ponsoldt’s “Summering” is a direct descendant of “Stand By Me,” films about youngsters peppered with wispy nostalgia, in which the innocence of their youth is challenged by a corpse tucked away where only children are likely to find it. But whereas Rob Reiner’s classic coming-of-age film romanticized a decades-bygone era, Ponsoldt finds the same magically complicated mash-up of naiveté and depth in a contemporary setting. Childhood, he seems to argue, is always magical and horrifying in equal measure, no...

Note: Spoilers for the entirety of “Love, Victor” Season 3 below.
For the past three years, “Love, Victor” has shepherded a wave of uplifting stories centered around young, queer people, including Hulu’s “Crush,” HBO Max’s “Genera+ion,” and Netflix’s “The Half of It” and “Heartstopper.” The serialized spin-off to the 2018 film “Love, Simon,” following Michael Cimino’s Victor Salazar, a closeted high schooler of Colombian and Puerto Rican descent, was heralded as having rectified some of the sins of its predecessor, offering a more nuanced and intricate representation of LGBTQ+ youth.
With its third season, which debuted on Hulu (and Disney+) in its entirety June 15, the series is coming to a close. The show’s unexpected end — announced back in February — came despite its maintenance of strong audience and critical reviews, with Them magazine describing it as “distressing proof that nothing pure lasts forever.”

The Half Of It Photo: Netflix/Kc Bailey Tribeca Film Festival returns to New York on June 8. Founded in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks in a bid to rejuvenate the area of the city, it has continued to grow in size and become a regular part of the festival calendar. As we look forward to bringing you coverage from this year's edition, we're getting in the mood by rounding up a selection of previous winners that you can screen from the comfort of your own home.
The Half Of It, Netflix
It seems like a fresh adaptation of Cyrano De Bergerac turns up every couple of years or so, with Joe Wright's musical version last year, just the latest in a line that also includes Steve Martin's Roxanne and Jean-Paul Rappenau's traditional retelling with Gerard Depardieu. This smart reworking from Alice Wu - which was named Tribeca's Best Filom in 2020 - throws sexual.

The new musical movie Cyrano will sound pretty familiar to anyone who pays attention to pop culture. After all, it's based on one of the most popular plots of the past century or so! But did you know that it's actually based on the life of a real person, too? Here's what to know about how a mildly scandalous French writer became a legendary literary character - and just how much of it is true to history.
Who Was the Real Cyrano?
In real life, Savien de Cyrano de Bergerac was part of a notable French family with roots in the professional class and the nobility in the early 1600s. Unfortunately, little is confirmed about his life and origins, and reliable sources are few and far between; much of the so-called "story" of his life was written after his death and likely embellished. Nevertheless, we know that he was most likely a minor noble,...

Philip Ettinger and Daniel Diemer will star in “Little Brother,” a new indie dramedy that is heading into production. The debut feature film is from Korean-American writer and director, Sheridan O’Donnell.
“Little Brother” follows Jake, played by Diemer, as he drives his older brother Pete, played by Ettinger, home for a family intervention after his most recent suicide attempt. While on the drive, the two brothers struggle to come to terms with the past, while trying to survive and cope with the present. “Little Brother” is inspired by a close friend of O’Donnell’s, who took his own life — with the film aiming to destigmatize and push conversations surrounding mental health and suicide.
Ettinger co-starred in HBO’s “I Know This Much Is True,” alongside Mark Ruffalo, and was the lead in the film, “The Evening Hour,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and will be released this August.
