Liked it but not the English
gokaio23 December 2022
Don't have much to say other than it I liked it for a first episode of the new season, however, everyone speaking English all the time was really distracting me from the whole experience. In previous seasons they didn't, so why now? Just makes everything seem less realistic and makes me cringe and focus less on the actual episode and plot. I mean, why would two Russians speak English to each other in the Soviet Union? Makes absolutely no sense at all. In season one and two we regularly heard Arabic and Spanish which I think, compared to this, improved my experience of watching the show and made it all a bit more believable. But whatever, nothing that can be done about it now. Rant over. Stellar episode.

Almost Scary How Timely and Revelant this Season is...
Sjamanen21 December 2022
It is almost scary how timely and relevant this 3rd season is as we are amidst the Russia-Ukraine war.

Jack Ryan (John Krasinski) returns with his old pal Jim Greer (Wendell Pierce), this time in an intense situation that is in many ways similar to real life events.

The first episode gets straight in on the action and give us a good hint of what's to come.

Personally, I have to say that this story and place of action (Europe) is far more interesting than the 2nd season.

As well all know from the trailer, a huge part of this season revolves around Ryan being on the run, which I think is an interesting approach that most definitely give me Jason Bourne vibes (which I am not against at all).

Good first ep, and I am very interested to see how this "Cold War" story develops.

First episode: 8/10.

Black Ops in the Black Sea
lavatch22 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The time is 1969. The place is Matoska, Russia. During the Cold War, the Soviets are building a mini nuke called the Sokol. But the project is suddenly terminated, and the crew is ruthlessly murdered.

Fast forward to the present. In Rome, CIA analyst Dr. Jack P. Ryan receives some intel from a Russian contact, Zoya Ivanova, that the Russians have revived the Sokol project. It is in the process of being built and will be used in a Russian first strike power play.

Jack gets permission to run a black op on the Black Sea. In the most daring sequence in the episode, Jack and his small team board the Russian steamer and discover not the nuke but the scientist Yuri, a potential defector. After a daring escape, Jack and Yuri land in La Grena, Greece. But their cover has been blown, ironically by Jack's Boss. As a result, Yuri is killed.

In a subplot, Alena "LeLe" Kovac, the President of the Czech Republic meets with the Russian Defense Minister Popop. NATO wants to place missiles in the Czech Republic as a defense against Russia after the invasion of Ukraine. LeLe will only refuse NATO's request if Russia withdraws its forces from Ukraine.

When Jack learns that Popop has been assassinated at the Prague soccer field, he recognizes that this is the first of the "Seven Days to the Rhine" scenario that is to culminate on Day 7 with the detonation of Sokol, possibly in the Baltic states.

Jack now must go rogue. He was left out in the cold by his duplicitous boss Elizabeth Wright, who made Jack a sacrificial pawn. Jack's old buddy Greer gives him a piece of advice in Arabic: "Shelter in Paradise!" Only in the next episode will it be revealed that "Paradise" is the name of an auto repair shop where Jack will meet his contact Tony.

Too bad it's all in English
momirko15 February 2023
So now everyone speaks English with accents. Too bad. It feels like it is adapted for a mediocre American viewer who can not stand hearing other language, and is delighted to see the same old plot about Russia's nuclear threat... Could writers come up with anything new instead of retelling the same old story again and again?

There are a lot of Goofs, you can read about them in other reviews, but the thing about the language is bothering me the most. Past two seasons were made more believable because of hearing the native language - you watch the scenery, you hear the language, you believe it. But now it is gone.

Jack Ryan is finally back and it shows yet again how great an political thriller it really is, John Krasinski never lets us down
Holt34429 December 2022
Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan is finally back after three years and one episode in, I can officially say I'm hooked. Though the first half was a slow burn, catching up with the characters and exposition regarding the season's story, the second half was the opposite. With you on the edge of your seat with suspension and tension in each scene. The production design and overall quality, from direction to editing to the sound design, it feels like the same quality as the first season. Time will tell if the quality will be the same. But I do have one criticism and it destroys the immersion and reality the show is good at, it's how the Russians are speaking English when they're alone with other Russians.

"Falcon" was directed by Jann Turner and written by Vaun Wilmott. To me both the direction and writing were quite great, I loved the cinematography, as each shot looks so good and was shot brilliantly. The premise of the season premiere: Jack Ryan is called into service to right a wrong against his country. Using the latest technology and help of a loyal friend he jumps into action to prevent chaos, that could destroy democracy and our republic.

The times when the show have been average and not as good, it have always had John Krasinski as Jack Ryan who is terrific in this. His presence is felt whenever he's on the screen and I think his performance were brilliant in this episode, I anticipate he'll do an award worthy performance in this season. Wendell Pierce returns and nails the performance as James Greer, but it isn't anything mind blowing, he's just good in the role. There's some others who returns, but those who are new is: Betty Gabriel as Elizabeth Wright, James Cosmo as Luka, Peter Guinness as Petr Kovac and Nina Hoss as Alena Kovac.

This was actually a really great premiere and I can't wait to see what else the writers and show have in store for us, but for now, I think season 3 is off to a great start.

Refreshing to hear all english
loki-9527327 December 2022
Cooly lit episode gave it a sinister feel, which is needed for a campy diversityscoring cast tv show. I really enjoyed hearing the entire show in the language for its audience (no more spanish thank allah). The Russian nuke scarmongering always works well to spin a good yarn these days. Its been a good sorty plot since the 60s haha.

Elisabeth wright character playing an angry black woman in every scene is too much. That character needs to be killed off and replaced by someone worthy of that role.

All in all a good start to a series that faltered in its sophomore season and lost viewership due to unlikable plot and location.

This is not a 8/10
BruceWayne330 December 2022
So Jim gets in a fire fight with the bad guys, doesn't scale the side of the boat but decides to do a header off the side of a tanker, survive, jump on a small boat and the bad guys on the tanker just watch???

They don't shoot at the small boat?

I didn't see 1 shot go off towards them

Then they escape to Greece And the bad guys just happen to be there ??

Also once again Jim Jumps into a vehicle while the bad guys are shooting but, they pause to allow him to get in the vehicle and make a safe get a way

Come on

This show just isn't believable I know that sounds silly But it doesn't make me think that Jim can do all these things I watch 007 and believe Daniel Craig can do all those things If that makes sense.

Dial back expectations
stevieeds23 December 2022
For fans of the series, dial back expectations for S3. It's watchable to the end because Krasinski, Pierce, and Kelly powerhouse perform again, the budget is generous, production slick. The problem seems to be a mostly wishy-washy, tired plot arc, coupled with weak scripting (cf. S1,S2), redundant dialogue, scene padding (sometimes lavishly), subtextsplaining (sorry for that), and drab character one-liners (again, cf. S1,S2). The final episode glaringly stands out as the best in the season, so there's that to look forward to. Given that S3 goes to the top of the espionage story tree, that only leaves outer space for S4, so I think we're done here. No matter, there's always the Jack Reacher reboot, and the new The Recruit.

Falcon
bobcobb30123 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Glad to have Jack Ryan back on our TV screens, a show that is unapologetic in its tone of trying to recreate nonsensical 80's action film stuff.

But can we get a break from the Russia/Ukraine stuff anywhere? There are lot of other countries that could be at the forefront of a show like this so why does it always have to be Russia?

Not a bad season premiere, but I worry the story will get way too convoluted way too quickly. This is one of Amazon's signature shows though and feels the void that Homeland left behind when it wrapped up. Just hope for some original storytelling in the coming episodes.

Nearly unwatchable
myvision20 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
How do you get away with writing like this?

It's absolutely ridiculous how this episode (and I suspect the rest of the season won't be any better in this regard) is getting the whole geopolitical framework, that the story seems to be built upon, completely wrong.

The "teleportation" from the Black Sea to Greece has been mentioned in other reviews, as has the ridiculous (albeit typical for many American shows and films) practice of having "Russians" talk to each other in English (complete with a phony Russian accent of course). Both are bad enough, but I guess to be expected (even though the first two seasons steered mostly clear of such blatant problems).

Here are a few more minor things:
  • 1969 was nowhere near the fall of the Soviet Union. At that time the Cold War was at its height. Why would there be any secret projects to "preserve" the Soviet Union? Why not change the date to 1989, if the timeframe isn't relevant to the story anyway?

  • Here's another one: The name Kovac (imdb won't let me use the correct spelling, which actually dictates the pronunciation) would never be pronounced with a "k"-sound at the end by any Eastern European. But then again it isn't a Czech name anyways, so why would the president of the Czech Republic be called that? And why use a German actress with an obviously German accent for the role instead of, maybe, a Czech one? Oh well, maybe she could have made anyone aware of the big problem with their story:

Why would any self respecting screenwriter with any idea of geopolitics use Czechia as a supposed buffer state, that's weary about "NATO" using them for this and that, which is also negotiating with the Russian government about military stuff all by itself? Why?

A five minute visit to Wikipedia would be enough to tell you that the Czech Republic IS A MEMBER OF NATO! And has been for more than twenty years. So much about the story of them having to choose sides or whatever.

Maybe I missed how this show is set in the early 1990s all of a sudden, but I'm pretty sure the first two seasons took place in present time.

Why not use any other central or Eastern European country, that's not a NATO member? Or even make up one? Dear writers, you're making fools of yourselves...

Too dark
steve-0075826 December 2022
Although the subject matter seems quite prescient, my enjoyment of this first episode was lessened by the the whole episode being poorly lit. Principal actors were on it, straight from the off, script was good without being great - very much the thriller not quite tipping over into cliche, sound had a clarity that is refreshing in the genre which can sometimes be more about effects than levels. However, every single scene seemed dimly lit. Facial expressions were difficult to impossible to read, wasting well over half of the actors' performances.

I found myself checking other channels, just to make sure I wasn't having an issue with my TV: they were all fine. It's a shame, because the camera work was good and some of the compositions gorgeous. However, when even daylight scenes were too dark to properly read story flow, something has obviously gone very wrong in the lighting department.

Fun, but not Jack Ryan
duaneschall-131272 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Jack Ryan was an analyst who was put in awkward positions.

Season 3 makes Jack Ryan just Jason Borne clone.

Suddenly, Jack Ryan is a BUDS trainned superhero that can out shoot SEALS and rescues the Team when under fire, and then is able to survive a shoot out when those pathetic operators can't cut it.

Tom Clancy was known for being very accurate. The man was under investigation for how accurate he was.

These writers don't have to worry about that at all.

It is probably the same issue that faced Mission Impossible and the Mummy, the lead actor pushing too hard to be more important. Either way, it changes the show tone and feel completely.

Not the Jack Ryan I remember.

The producers and the scriptwriters need some geography lesson.
ismetcengic1 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I love Tom Clancy, I have already watched the first 2 seasons of Jack Ryan, but unfortunately there are serious logical and geographical mistakes in the first episode of season 3. Navigating at least 300-400 miles from the Black Sea to Greece on a small zodiac boat with 6 people, I think the producers and the scriptwriters need some geography lesson or I suspect the producers or the scriptwriters hate Turkey so they bypassed the Bosphorus Strait, the Sea of Marmara and the Canakkale Strait to not promote Turkey. I am really curious how Tom Clancy would react to this mistake if he was still alive..

No more native speech
tomasder1 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I guess for American audiences they did the show all-english, but for me this kind off ruined the experience compared to the first two seasons. Going with a more traditional Russia v US plot is probably for the same reason. The location team or writers should really look at a map of Europe before sailing a zodiac from the black sea to a beach near Athens. The soccer stadium scenes also look very obviously fake. Furthermore I find it hard to believe they would burn Jack this quickly after all he has done before this operation. For all these reasons the entire show feels a lot more lazy than the first two seasons so far.

Did the writers even go to school?
w3xh4k10231 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So they are chasing a magical nuclear weapon, which can be used without attribution. There, that's the main plot point.

If you can beleive that, the writers would also have you believe that:
  • Greece has direct access to the Black Sea;
  • US warships can roam freely in the Black Sea;
  • a 3 megatonne nuclear weapon is considered "tactical" and "low yield";
  • Soviet cars from 1980s were existant in 1969;
  • Russian generals are given Catholic funerals;
  • Russian military personell still call each other "comrade"...
...and the list goes on.

So lazy and ignorant writing. Tom Clancy must be spinning in his grave.

Season 1 was OK, season 2 was watchable, but season 3 is insulting.

Same old storyline, too predictable. Unnatural voice modification
raijonney27 December 2022
First off John is a good actor but in season 3 his voice has been modified way too much and it sounds like made up - not his natural voice. It's like watching John but listening to a different actor. Second the story line is so old - russia, scientist, double agents, nuclear war blah blah blah .. I mean nothing original so far.. some scenes themselves could be found in on other other previous spy type movies.. couldn't stand more than one episode.. might end up watching it just in hope of something good .. but can't recommend it.. all other characters are sleepy.. it's like they were forced to learn their lines and couldn't find any energy to deliver them .. or they fit perfectly in their stereotypical roles that there almost no element of surprise or excitement.. all Russian characters and their demeanour is exactly they can be found in numerous any similar storyline movies .. action scenes are nothing to be yearned for either..

All in all a half hearted copy paste effort .. and John please tell the producers and voice editors to not modulate your voice .. it's really a deal breaker.

From Black Sea to Greece? WITH ZODIAC??!!!
mehmet_onder26 December 2022
Well, although I like Jack Ryan type spy flicks, this is much more than enough. Alright, I can see that The US and Turkey are not getting along well, despite both being NATO allies, but not using Turkey or even Bulgaria in this manner to be the safe beach and choosing the new watchdog Greece on east Mediterrenian cause a great defy in basic geography. I mean, come on, just check the Black Sea and Greece on the map and see what I mean. That zodiac itself must be sokol nuclear warhead to go all the way THROUGH ISTANBUL WITHOUT SEEN BY ANYONE WITH THE ENORMOUS POWER SOURCE!!!!

I even don't want to add other (I want to be as much polite as I can here) goofs that the episode includes. Time to say farewell to Jack Ryan.

Since when does Greece have a beach on the black sea....
Higgy5225 December 2022
In the opening of Season 3 we watch Jack use a small rubber ducky/boat to board a cargo ship in the BLACK sea, then proceeds to a beach in Greece - without going through Istanbul or the Dardanelles Strait - Obviously, the Greeks must have invaded Bulgaria.... This does remind me of the old joke "Q: Why do Americans start wars? A: To learn geography"

Apart from this obvious blooper the show really is pedestrian, and there are no characters that you care about, without any sympathetic characters the film is just a collection of scenes and chases. I guess this is OK but a computer game has more interest.

Is this Jack Ryan or a season of Chuck? Difficult to tell.
s_imdb-6235 June 2023
I loved season 1, liked season 2 but season 3 seems to have been written and directed by people who know nothing or care nothing about spies, politics, geography, etc, etc. Not even watched any of the million other US spy shows to get some pointers to the basics. The only thing they seem to be experts on is girl power - thats pretty well covered in season 3. What a shame it has to be in such a bad vehicle. Could have been written by 12 yr olds. Or...maybe it was written FOR 12 yr old - people who know nothing about anything but like loud bangs and running around. In the title I mention that it could be a season of th series 'Chuck', but even that is better due to the romance with the beautiful spy storyline.

Utter pulp garbage
stusaph6 January 2023
Sigh. Where to begin . I guess s1. Which was good. S2 showed a marked down grade and now S3 which is complete trash. People stay on screen long enough to move the ridiculous plot along. Plot armor and teleportation is the norm and the dialogue or Clancy has been replaced by the writers idea of quitter banter. Trust me . It's neither witty OR banter. It's contrived...... dull. Dull. Dull twaddle.

I wish the writers of todays big budget shows and movies had to pass a test first and perhaps learn what a conversation sounds like or perhaps... oh god I'm so bored of my review. Please. Favor do yourself. Stop at S2.

Pretty poorly written, Darkly shot, just about got through it but there are a lot better ways to waste eight hours...
tobyjwhite-127 December 2022
Average at best...lot of action chunks that were shot in the dark and difficult to watch, a script was a little cardboard, plot flaws based on geography that even a risk board could prove was twaddle, baddies that were lacking at least one dimension, an ending felt really clumsily done, and there was something in the way they use UHD that at times feels great, but too often felt gratuitous and almost made me feel nauseous. Love Wendell pierce but there was little else that I could genuinely rate it for... feels like Amazon are desperately trying to squeeze content out at the moment ... this isn't going to win them any new customers (or at leat I hope not).

Why do Russians speak English between themselves?
mdjuros27 December 2022
I hate excuses like "let's speak English because we're in America" but this is supposed to be Russia in 1969 and they all speak English ( with russian accent) between themselves . I just watch "The Recruiter", not a big budget production and maybe unknown actors , but they were soo good working with languages, going from French to English so smoothly, using subtitles when needed and never justifying the " necessity " of speaking English all the time. It's so sad to see a team work so hard producing a show like Jack Ryan and letting us loose all credibility and/or taking us out of the story with those absurdities so easy to fix.

This is soo cheesy I had to turn off!
holbrookben-136-41032324 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This was the most unbelievable modern action thing I've seen in ages. It treats audience as stupid. Sneaking up on a boat with a loud outbound engine? Sending a special ops team in without helmets (just so we can see main characters hair)? Characters appearing out of nowhere when they were physically far away? Security details not even doing basic security detail items? DAmazon spent lots on this show and it looks like the entire budget went towards location shooting rather than writing. Honestly, the locations don't contribute to this, so it's such a shame. If Amazon wants to be taken seriously it needs to start taking writing seriously.

Why is that so hard?
mwen001-222 December 2022
I don't get it! Why is so hard to make a good thriller today? Season was already mediocre at best but this one is even worse. I never have seen a more boring and slow season opener. Minutes of cars driving and people walking through hallways. Almost nothing happens and when it happens it so full of cliches it is embarrassing! The best you can say it us timely but the rest is just downright tv from the eighties. Dialogue's are close a comic strip. The storytelling is linear like a straight line without any surprises! Acting is feeling very flat. Everyone is as he expected, no ambivalent characters. Is that modern tv we all talking about? No it's the opposite!

Girls get it done right.
Malkavian3167 July 2023
I watched the first 2 seasons, and they were watchable at least. The 3rd season, I didn't even make it through the first episode.

Not even 20 minutes into the very first episode (I checked the run time), there were 3 separate instances of setting up the story with "empowered" females in positions of power, one being POTUS. The dialog centered around being underestimated, and how men don't like women in power, and what capable strong independent women they are in a man's world.

I'm all for women being in positions of authority, as long as it's because they're capable, not just because they happen to be women, or a minority, or some token political rallying cry. If you need to decry the patriarchy 20 minutes into the first episode to explain why there are several women in charge... I'm out. Not going to suffer through your political correctness / feminist garbage.
