"Social Media Apocalypse" (2019 release; 66 min.) is a documentary about the dangers of social media. As the movie opens, we are treated to people (mostly women, almost all of them very good looking) staring at their device of choice. The British voice-over comments: "Socal media can inform, manipulate, destroy human lives", and later comments "social media are the most powerful tool for controlling the masses, relacing religion." No background is given. No "Social Media History 101" is given. Instead, we get yet more footage of people, mostly women, mostly very good looking, staring at their devices of choice.
Couple of comments: this is the latest of serial video documentarian Philip Gardiner. He makes films like these by the DOZENS. In just 2019 alone, he is credited as having made 13 (!) "movies", including such classics like "American Illuminati 2" and "Bible Conspiracies 2", I'm not kidding. One can only imagine how much "research" goes into these movies. Having seen "Social Media Apocalypse", I can tell you that there seems to have been little or no research on these issues. Instead we get a non-stop stream of general statements and opinions without any backup or evidence of any kind. Mind you: I am not saying that social media are good for you (I myself am not active on either facebook, twitter, you tube, instagram, or whatever). I was hoping to see the scientific evidence behind these general statements and opinions. Instead, we get yet more footage of people, mostly women, mostly very good looking, staring at their devices of choice.
I was browsing the offerings of documentaries on peacock, and decided to give this a chance. I shouldn't have bothered. But here is the good thing: I suffered through this, so you don't have to.
