Crazy Wisdom: The Life & Times of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche (2011)
Excellent documentary on Trungpa
I'll see this one over and over. Great job done by Johanna and her son (et. al.) As I recall, Johanna and her husband were students of Trungpa and so were present to shoot a lot of footage of Trungpa in various locations. Don't worry, this is NOT a spoiler: There is a scene where Trungpa and another man finish a flower sculpture - I believe its called Ichibana. In the scene, when they have finished and are bowing, be sure to keep your eyes on the flowers until the end of the scene. This film shows Trungpa's eccentricities as well as his deep understanding of the dharma. I am not sure why such a terrific film is not yet in wide distribution. As well, PBS and HBO documentaries, ought to screen it. Don't miss it!!
The New World (2005)
A painterly poem. A poetic symphony.
A painterly poem. A poetic symphony. And Malick is the master.
If you can be in the moment and let this one pour over you, you just might experience a taste of nirvana.
Malick's films get more and more exquisite.
Days of Heaven, Thin Red Line
and now The New World.
If you get great pleasure from lying in the grass and feeling sunlight dance in your eyes and feeling the wind's breeze across your cheek perhaps you will come away in some sense high after seeing this film.
Great soundtrack is worth CD ownership.
10.5 (2004)
For Oprah and Titanic fans
The epitome of sappy melodramatic disaster movies. Over the top, predictable and full of cliche. I rolled my eyes so much during these 4 hours that I think I may not recover. I'd give it a 0, except that there is no 0 rating. Perhaps they get a 1 for a few fair special effects. Can't the networks do better than this? Or is this what our public now finds breathtaking and entertaining?
Naked World: America Undercover (2003)
Very Well Done!
I've seen many documentaries and I'd rate this among the best I've seen. Perhaps it does not cover new ground as far as a documentary style, but the pace, photography, and music are excellent. Some people dismiss this piece because of the artist and his work. My vote is for the documentary and is not intended to be a vote regarding his art.
Eban and Charley (2000)
Terrible
I gave this film a 2, only because there was an effort made to make a film and because it seems that the actor that played Eban, has some talent.
The film was terrible. The script seemed to be written by a teenager who was in love with a guy in his twenties. It was extremely predictable, slow, boring and unoriginal. It looked like a home movie shot on video with the neighbors as actors. It seems like the simplistic fantasies of a teenager filled with cliche.
There are many other films which deal with this subject matter and worlds apart in quality. Start with "For a lost soldier".
My apologies to the filmmaker(s) for such a harsh review. My advice if they are interested: get audience feedback once you've got a starting cut of a film, then go to work and make it better before you send it out for the world to condemn it.
