The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (2023)
My favorite book as a child of the 70/80s
Dear Wes Anderson, please do The Twits next! Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp. There. It's cast.
Sincerely, Star
Review of Henry Sugar:
This was my favorite book as a child. I read this and the other 6 stories no less than a dozen times. This seemed word for word. I loved the "simplicity" of the set allowing the story to be told. But I know that it was not a simple setup to pull off.
My husband never knew the book or anything about it and he liked this a lot. I thought it was funny when they went "off camera" and the mics were hollow. Great touch.
Absolutely loved this adaptation. Hope Wes Anderson does more of these.
The Flash (2023)
Woof. We tried. Couldn't get past 25 minutes
When you throw a bunch of babies out a window it's just not exciting because obviously you're not going to kill babies. Putting one of them microwave was a bit much. CGI was horrible. We got 25 minutes in on MAX and we just couldn't. Ezra Miller may be the worst actor I've ever seen. I didn't even know he was a felon till tonight. The parents were cringe. And I don't understand why Ben Afflecks mask at the beginning looked like it was burnt off his face. I wanted to go further because i was really only there for Michael Keaton. But we couldn't even get that far. Three of us in the room, not one of us wanted to watch any more.
Colony (2016)
This show has so many layers
It's so good tat even though I know it was cancelled I still am watching it again. Some DECENT network should pick it up.
13 Going on 30 (2004)
Didn't expect much and got a pleasant surprise - good date movie...
Ok, really quick: It's not BIG, it's not MR. Destiny, It's 13 going on 30 and it is it's own movie. Go see it for Jennifer Garner, go see it because it's actually a great movie, thoughtful, funny and heartwarming. I loved it. She is a natural at anything she does. I'd compare her performance to Tom's in BIG - she played a 13 year old girl perfectly. It's adorable. And this is the most shallow critique I've ever given. I am sick - I took my kids on a whim, expecting to get some good shuteye. I laughed throughout the whole thing. If you're in your 30s and grew up in the 80s you will appreciate it more than any other generation - the songs play into it perfectly. And by the way: Mark Ruffalo? Hello! Who is this guy? You will fall in love with him, I promise. Great Date movie.
Rollercoaster (1977)
Definitely add it to your DVD library
I have seen this movie probably 100 times or more. It's one of the best movies ever made and seems to have been forgotten. I was privileged to have owned the video on BETA. But my BETA player has since broken (12 years ago?) and I have not been able to view it. Sadly, you can only buy it on DVD and I have not had the pleasure to own one just yet. But be sure that it will be one of the first DVDs I buy once I do get a player.
George Segal is great - I'd say his best performance. His hatred-for-life-sarcasm was never matched again. Timothy Bottoms is interesting to watch since this was the movie that the media said would be his big breakthrough. I believe he even won an award for upcoming new star for this. He was the heartthrob back then in the late 70s. Funny...where is he now? Nevertheless, he was great as the psycho wreaking havok on the amusement parks to get a little dough. All in all, the movie is a twisted rollercoaster ride of fun, thrills and excellent acting.
If you have a DVD player, I would definitely recommend your buying it and adding it to your library. AND...if you have a copy of it anywhere lying around on Videotape, have sympathy on me. I haven't had a Rollercoaster fix in over a decade.
Playing by Heart (1998)
The entire theatre stayed put at the ending credits taking in all they had just seen. On a scale of 1-10, I give it a 9.
I saw this movie twice: once with a friend and the 2nd time with my husband. It was better the second time around and I would definitely recommend it. There's nothing to tell without completely giving the story away (and if you don't want to know anything about it, be careful of reading other comments regarding this movie in this area, because so far 2 people tell the entire story which just blows the whole concept).
If you don't enjoy love stories, then this is not a movie for you. It's a quadruple love story with a little mother/son understanding and a dose of spouse doing some soul searching: 6 different stories going on at once. Everyone meets up at the end, and if you pay attention you can enjoy trying to figure out how they all relate during the movie. But don't talk too much trying to figure it out, or you will miss vital parts of the conversations. You will also miss some incredible acting by Angelina Jolie (Voight), who has most of the dialogue and Ryan Phillipe, who has a perfect rapport with her. John Stewart surprized me in his natural ability to act along with Gillian Anderson, who in my eyes can do no wrong. The rest of the cast does a great job also. If nothing else, go for Sean Connery who is always at his best.
I believe that certain people don't like this movie because there are too many words for them to follow. Again, I would recommend it. Both times that I saw it, the entire theatre stayed put at the ending credits for at least 3 minutes while taking in all they had just seen. That in itself should show you that this is something special. Watch and see if that happens when it ends for you. On a scale of 1-10 I give it a 9.
