Anaconda (1997)

o.k. it's absolute pulp, but..

With this kind of film you don't talk about getting involved with the film anymore, or how real it seems. You're just counting corpses and think how many must die in how much time for the film to end in 90 minutes. But I think the snake movement bits were quite well done. I even think that the movie started out with a computer wizz kid making a snake, and that the film was being made around it later. But I think the makers didn't entirely fail in making entertainment. At one point you are beyond the irritation with predictable and ingredient films.

Julius Caesar (1953)
7/10
a fictional drama with historic characters
25 October 1998
I guess these dialogues can be considered quite nice, if you bother to pay close attention to them. (Who is that dialogue writing chap anyway!)

But I cannot help being bothered more by the lack of historic correctness. Especially the scene where Caesar is murdered and people start giving preaches to the people of Rome without one soldier or guard ever around. As an unhistoric character study I think it is also way beyond the common human way of things. I think no-one ever killed someone he truly loved for the good of the country. Brutus's character as described in this movie is out of this world. And I'm just not caught by the movie.

Dante's Peak (1997)

sit back and enjoy the ride

This film is made to make money. This means it is cooked according to a familiar recipe and that you know where it is going. But the same can be said of a roller-coaster. And sometimes I love a roller-coaster. But a home cinema environment is recommended.

I just didn't quite like the "Roughy" part. Don't know why.

A Bronx Tale (1993)

a sentimental movie with a nice message for the children

Nice to see that the father isn't just wonderful and the gangster isn't just bad. But I feel all I get to know about Johnny doesn't fit into a real life personality. In the end it's just your average American moralising sentimental thing. And I just don't have to be told that racism is silly anymore. Maybe it's just not for me.

standard entertainment

Entertaining, but a lot like "coma" with Michael Douglas. Nothing really original in the movie, apart from the fact that the main person doesn't happen to get into a relationship during the movie and all that sort of sideline nonesense. Funny to see Hugh Grant just cannot help playing an insecure character even if he is playing someone who succeeds in at a very difficult task by being very determined. Moral issues, goodies & baddies with a little nuance, violent climax, happy end.
