Troy (2004)

Solid and highly entertaining

Excellent performances, in particular Peter O'Toole, make what is a very solid if not epic movie, highly enjoyable.

Pitt, Bana & Bloom come up with sterling work as Achilles, Hector & Paris and all three manage to convince enough to care about their characters, which all to often, does not occur. All other supporting actors gave good accounts, but I would like to see an end to Sean Bean's sword-wielding roles; perhaps, for a future part he may consider a role involving flower arranging or feng shui.

With Gladiator & LOTR as predecessors, I think it unlikely that this will reap as many gongs as it should.

That said, I give it 8/10 for managing to make 2hrs & 43mins fly by effortlessly.

Dolores Claiborne (1995)

WAS DESERVING OF MAJOR ACCOLADES........

i have recently purchased this on DVD here in the UK at a very reasonable price and I heartily recommend that anyone who recognises powerhouse perfomances buys it too.

This film is deeply moving; the performances by the three main females are all mesmerising.

But it is the ravaged face of Kathy Bates that lingers in the mind long after this film has ended.

Kathy Bates deservedly won her Oscar for "Misery", but was equally as deserving in her astounding performance as Dolores.

She has proved that she is one of the truly great living Hollywood legends.

You would be hard pressed to find a more poignant and utterly absorbing film which should have at least been nominated for awards.

The Academy should be ashamed.

The Haunting (1999)

Awful

A mish-mash of genres come together to make what is ultimately a right mess - one of the worst films I have ever had the misfortune to view.

The original is far better - seek that out before wasting your time and money on this utter trash.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)

A good conclusion

Having loved the first two, I eagerly awaited the concluding installment of LOTR - and wasn't disappointed.

The sfx are awesome; in particular the aerial shots and, of course the battle scenes.

The three and a half hours in the cinema sped by, a tribute to the engrossing nature that has been the feature of all three films.

Cinematography has reached a new plateau.

The Screaming Woman (1972 TV Movie)

Frightening....

I saw this on TV way back in the early 70's and it truly frightened the living daylights out of me.

Anyone from the industry reading this should surely consider a DVD release of this engrossing masterpiece

Having first watched this series as a mere boy of 10 years in the early 70's, it is indeed a pleasure to see it being repeated on UK cable TV as I write.

To me, it has lost none of it's charm and appeal, particularly the richness of characters, characters which were allowed to develop fully over the period it was screened.

If you haven't seen this, make an effort to do so - it was and is one of the most beautifully written and acted British drama series to grace the screen.

Sheer magic...

Years on, this show retains it's true magic....especially the earlier episodes which will have you in stitches.. Great to see the reruns on Digital UK - watch them all - it will brighten up your night! 10/10

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

A cinematic masterpiece...

Having waited a while for all the hype to die down, I entered the cinema not knowing whether the wait was going to be worth it or not.

Well, the wait was definitely worth it - a stunning cinematic masterpiece; majestic, sweeping, exhilarating and sometimes moving.

Sir Ian McKellen's Gandalf is deserving of a major accolade and the rest of the cast performance was impeccable as were the special effects, cinematography and sound-track

A genuinely eerie & compelling movie - both Kidman & Flannigan deserve some recognition for their superb performances; you could hear a pin drop throughout the whole event, which is rare in cinemas these days Totally absorbing 9/10
