Great but not brilliant
5 June 2000
I did not really know what to expect when I went to see "American Psycho"; I had heard that the book was superior to the film and also differed from it in many ways. Well, in my opinion, the movie was great. The sterile atmosphere that dominates most of it is a hilariously poignant image of the Armani/bad music-hell that was the 80`s. Christian Bale as Pat Bateman is brilliant, his emotionless persona resurrecting the yuppie phenomenon and its trademarks in an amusing way. The script was fresh and funny and worked well with the direction. Yet something was missing... 8/10

Kikujiro (1999)
A letdown...
3 February 2000
After seeing Sonatine and Hana-bi I was almost certain that Takeshi Kitano could do no wrong. Most of the comments I have heard regarding Kikujiro no natsu have been timid, not being able to admit that although the comedy element in Kikujiro is fresh and interesting, it fades into pretentious, poor slapstick towards the end. Yet as a whole, Kikujiro was well above average and definitely worth seeing.

Juha (1999)

No color...No sound...Yet brilliant?
26 February 1999
Juhais a black and white film with no sound, yet it is one of the best Finnish movies this year. Director Kaurismäki has drawn great performances out of the three leads, especially Outinen, who truly knows how to act "without words". The script is reasonably short and keeps the audience content through these silent 78 minutes. So, if you can overcome your prejudices against black and white silent movies, do see this one. "Juha" really delivers!

Brilliance!
3 February 1999
It`s been a while since a good Finnish war film has made it to the big screen, but after a long wait it has happened. The sheer brilliance of the love story/agony of war- description is only paralleled by the marvelous performances by the two leads, Franzen and Björklund. Whether you prefer romantic story-telling or gruesome war, this is DEFINITELY your movie!
