Le bunker de la dernière rafale (1981)
Cold, bizarre, paranoid, but promising
I was hopeful when I saw this short film before a screening of "Delicatessen," but frankly it left me cold and confused. There are some creative costumes, sets and sounds, but in the end "The Bunker" is little more than an experiment in bleakness, like Lynch's "Eraserhead." There's very little dialogue, color, or narrative to follow, but fans of Jeunet and Caro will recognize some of the retro-futuristic devices and effects -- many are revisited in the far more polished and fun "City of Lost Children."
Heartbeeps (1981)
Worst robot romantic comedy ever
If you like bad movies, this one's a real treat. Kaufman & Peters stagger around in robot costumes, escape slavery only to wander aimlessly, and find true robot love. I believe this is the first movie that ever made me consider walking out. I should note I was 12, and could be entertained by shiny objects.
Star 80 (1983)
When Eric Roberts was actually exciting
Star 80 is an dark, voyeuristic walk through the mind of a disturbed, controlling boyfriend. Eric Roberts, hot off his work in Pope of Greenwich Village, showed early promise portraying the creepy nobody that woos an underage pinup-next-door, then unknowingly catapults her into the exclusive world of Hefner and Hollywood. Stranger than fiction, this tragic story makes for some serious suspense, and Bob Fosse's direction drops you in the bad guy's brain as he grows completely psychotic. Too bad Roberts' talent never generated any more sparks.
