Fifteen and Pregnant (1998)
Not a realistic movie at all.
This has got be one of the worst, and most unrealistic, movies I have seen. It was obviously meant as anti teen pregnancy propaganda, and in that regard it worked. But as a movie showing how teen pregnancy really is, it was terrible.
Tina's mother has got be one of the worst parents I have ever seen. I know people think (and the movie portrays) that she is a good mother for not kicking Tina out, but that's not enough. Every single thing that happened she put in a negative light. Even in the show Tina commented on it, but that was done in order to show just how naive and not ready for pregnancy Tina is.
Every time Ray (the babies father) tried to do the right thing and be a father for his kid the parents kicked him away. If there was a rule book listing how to make sure someone does not want to be a father for his kids they followed every single rule!
He may not be an adult, and he may not marry Tina, but he can still be a father for his kid, and he sure wanted to! But he was not allowed to.
And why exactly did the teen moms have to miss graduation? They are not invalids or something, oh but wait, I forgot: this is supposed to be propaganda, so lets make pregnancy seem as bad as possible.
And the teen mom in the movie? If there was ever an example of how not to be a teen mom she was it. Again we are supposed to see just how bad it is, even if it's not realistic. For example her daughter basically cried in every scene she was in, and made her mothers life as miserable as possible. Not even a single scene of her mother playing with her daughter. Or adjusting her schedule to work around nap times (and sleep times) as every real mother on the planet does.
And even outright lies are not above this movie - some of the characters are discussing how many women die in childbirth and mention that it's 20%. And nowhere in the show are they ever corrected (it's more like 0.8%). Obviously in order to put some fear in the minds of the teen viewers.
If you are trying to scare your teen, then sure, watch this movie. But if you want to see a show about teen pregnancy stay far far away.
And if you want to see how to cope and deal with pregnancy, basically do exactly the opposite of everything in this movie.
Big Daddy (1999)
Incredible movie - a must see - funny and very touching
This movie is incredible, it's a must see, it's funny and very touching. I've noticed that the critics hate it, but that's OK they are incapable of enjoying a movie - it's their job. This is one of the very few movies I have actually recommended for friends to see, I usually don't bother giving recommendations to people.
The story, and the movie is really very simple. And when I left I felt kind of like this was a very "light" movie, and yet I enjoyed it immensely. Don't try to analyze it, just watch it and enjoy. Who cares if some of it is implausible (but possible) - a lot of it is for humor effect, and besides this is a movie to watch and enjoy, not to analyze.
I also read some comments that keep referring to Adam Sandler - and comparing this movie with his earlier ones - that's a very stupid thing to do. Just watch this movie all by itself, don't force the movie to be the same as other ones you have seen, it's quite unique.
Maybe critics hate movies so much because they keep comparing movies to others by the same actor(s) and asking why didn't they do this and why didn't they do that, which was in the other movie - very very very dumb. Why exactly should every movie have elements from every other movie an actor has made? Is being unique not allowed?
And finally in closing, if you read the other comments - you will notice that every negative comment will attempt to analyze the film, and all the positive ones will just tell it was great go and watch, or other kinds of global generalizations (it was funny, the kid was cute, a nice message and a great story).
So do that - watch it, don't analyze it.
(OK OK, one analysis, the movie does a really great job in portraying the love that father and their sons can develop - read the credits at the end where they dedicate it to fathers who have put up with us.)
Rushmore (1998)
The most boring movie I have ever seen.
This is absolutely the most boring movie I have ever seen. You spend the entire first hour waiting for something to happen, and then when you realize it won't, the movie throws just barely enough interesting scenes to keep you from walking out.
It's billed as a comedy, but the entire movie has just one funny scene, and that's the one they showed in the preview. (Guy in O.R. scrubs, main character says Oh aRe you?)
The acting is good and the characters look good, but the script is missing. Quite simply nothing much happens. The main character does things for no particular reason, i.e. things don't occur in any particular sequence, nor does one action seem to lead to another. And the movie never bothers to explain why he does the stuff that he does do, it seems totally random.
The "romance" or even the plays the main character put on are never fleshed out. There are numerous random scenes that have nothing to do with what came before or after, they could have been cut out and no one would have noticed - in fact 80% of the story could have been cut out without anyone noticing. You could have also taken the film, cut it into scenes and put it back together in a random order and no one would notice.
In other words there is no story, only a collection of (well acted) scenes. If you like that sort of stuff go see this, but if you want an actual story I can't think of a movie with less of one.
I can't even begin to describe how boring this show is, the only thing in it that doesn't suck is the pretty girl, and cute kids.
