Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
Very Expensive B-movie
After seeing this movie, I felt like I had watched a b-movie without the nudity. The only reason people will watch a b-movie is to get to the naked girl...only in "Clones" the naked girl is the action scenes. Which are truly amazing and worth the money...if you don't care about anything else. Only I would like to see a little more (story that is...not nudity).
The movie completely hangs on the Star Wars mystic to scrape by. As far as a sub-story within itself, well, its lame. The acting wasn't bad there just wasn't a script to work with. If Mr. Lucas would have just showed the action sequences back to back, he would have saved tons of time and money (maybe) and still had the same plot.
What Dreams May Come (1998)
Disappointment
Being a Christian, the twisted heaven and hell ideas were bothersome, but I did manage to get past those ideas and see the film for what the writer and director wanted to portray. And the film still fell short of being effective. I thought the movie was slow and predictable. Many places it was simply "cheese". This film was certainly not one of Robin Williams career highlights. It will never be able to stand up to "Dead Poets Society" or "Good Will Hunting". The story just didn't hold together very well and the flashbacks became distracting. The effects were good, but not good enough to save this film from failure. I had big expectations for this film and it fell short in every aspect. If you are a christian, you will be bothered by the film's ideas and disappointed at its look at heaven.
The Waterboy (1998)
Predictable Fun
Although, most of the really funny stuff was shown on TV commercials for the film, this movie still entertained me. It made me laugh out loud which is pretty much my basis for a movie being funny. However, it was very predictable, but I wasn't expecting to be surprised so it didn't get in the way of the humor for me. The only huge negative aspect of the movie was Adam Sandler's constant "stupid" voice. It was funny for a while, but got on my nerves by the end of the movie. Overall, I would say wait to rent this movie with friends when you are in the mood to laugh.
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
A wonderful movie that I wish never had to exist
If someone expects a movie to capture the real feelings, events, and horror of what WWII soldiers felt during the war, then they had better re-evaluate their own reality. It is true, no movie can ever give true credit to the real feelings of WWII soldiers, but Saving Private Ryan seems to come close.
I have never been close to being in a war or even in the military, but Saving Private Ryan has given me new respect not only of WWII, but of all our armed forces today. In these days, it seems freedom in America is something that almost has naturally always existed. Most children and teens don't realize the sacrifice that has been made to bring about that freedom. Steven Spielberg, has crafted a movie to bring that lost reality of war to us who do not fully understand the terror of it. The details in this movie especially in the opening battle scene, allowed me some idea, although can never do justice, of what my grandfathers had to endure. I was truly impacted in more ways than I had expected before viewing the movie. This movie has succeeded in making people think seriously about life and death and what it all means. I think we need more of that in America. I have to say this is my favorite movie of all time, but I hate the fact that it ever had to exist in the first place.
Pleasantville (1998)
Caught between Cheesy and Genius
Pleasantville made me argue with myself whether I liked it or not. It was a beautifully filmed movie. I thought the cinematography was as good as movies get. There were many times that the movie plot seemed tender and began to draw me in, however, there were just as many times that it made me roll my eyes. Some scenes were as cheesy as they come. I felt the film could have been funnier if the writers hadn't tried to cram so many of their "inside-out" morals into the film. I think Pleasantville would have been a huge success in the earlier part of the century as a silent film.
