Sonnenallee (1999)
a funny piece of history
'Sonnenallee' is definitly the funniest german pic this year and furthermore a perfectly developed piece of history, that soon will be forgotten trough to the fall of the berlin wall. The biggest plus on Leander Haussmanns film is the cast of no-names, who give so much realism to the flick that you feel thrown back in time without any doubt. And I laughed troughout the whole 90 minutes. Nevertheless will it be difficult for the movie to get real attention outside germany trough to the specific theme, but a must for everyone inside this country.
Breakfast of Champions (1999)
boring actors and unamusing story
Why did they do is? And what for? When I look back on 'Buffalo Bill and the Indians' Alan Rudolph made with Altman, it's the kind of movie I can call a 'satire'. It's Willis, Nolte, Finney, Headley, but all that came out is waste of time and waste of money, stuffed with nerv-wrecking episodes and over-the edge actors. I really can't tell what went wrong, I just was happy when it was over. This junk doesn't make money even on video. Sorry, that I have to say it, because under better circumstances it's a beautiful cast and a fine director.
23 - Nichts ist so wie es scheint (1998)
A wonderful three-story movie twisted as exciting period piece.
Director Hans-Christian Schmid proves after his family oriented 'Nach Fuenf Im Urwald'that he is ready for more. Much more. It's an intelligent movie about Conspiracy-Theories. It is a fine period-picture. It's a movie about a confused personality. Wonderful twisted in a crapping storyline.Actors Diehl and Busch are rare talents in german cinema and couldn't be better casted. Helmer Schmid knows how to handle actors and story between fact and fiction likewise. '23' is more oscar-worthy than Tywkers videoclip 'Run Lola Run'....and beware the number 23 in any way...
