Scary Movie 2 (2001)
Send Hollywood the right message: Do not pay to see this film!
Like a bushel of peaches left in the sun, Scary Movie 2 quickly breaks down into a stale, discolored, and distasteful piece of film garbage. Unfortunately for those who were lured into seeing this film do to a lack of quality movie alternatives, Scary Movie offers no reprieve from what can only be described as a lackluster summer.
It pains me to learn that a movie of this poor a caliber has made over $52 million and that somewhere in that total my $7.50 has been included. A box office take that large will only encourage more ill-conceived sequels. And dare I say it...a second sequel to Scary Movie! I can only hope that will not come to fruition and if it is made people will not see it. And that is why I took the time to submit this comment: Out of hope that people will read this review and others like it and choose to not give their $7.50 to those responsible for this completely awful film.
Safari 3000 (1982)
Decent chemistry, Bad movie...
About the only item worth noting on this lackluster film was the chemistry between Stockard Channing and David Carradine. It seemed as if the two actors were reading off each others reactions rather than a script. Perhaps that was part of the problem with this movie.
At times this film reminded me of the Disney film "The Love Bug." Of course "Safari 3000" is no where near as good a movie as "The Love Bug," and that isn't saying very much. Absolutely skip over this movie and be glad you haven't given up two hours of your life.
Meet the Parents (2000)
Simply a hilarious comedy...
Really this is a very enjoyable film, especially for anyone who can empathize with Gaylord "Greg" Focker's predicament (love that name). I found myself whincing in agony at times as I found myself vicariously reliving those awkward moments when you first "meet the parents." And for those very few who find themselves watching a less than the hilarious comedy, try counting how many times Robert DeNiro's voice is dubbed over when saying "Focker."
The Ninth Gate (1999)
Wonderful contemporary thriller...
As with many of Polanski's films, "The Ninth Gate" includes beautiful settings, great orchestration, and intriguing characters. He was able to put together a talented cast, including several from the largely untapped European community. These include Jose Lopez Rodero, giving a short but humorous and witty performance, and the striking Emmanuelle Seigner, who plays her part with the perfect subtlety (no doubt due in part to Polanski's influence). Johnny Depp (playing the bibliophile anti-hero) gives another adept performance and the musical score is expertly composed. The only negatives I noticed were that the movie was at times too slow paced and that the ending left something to the imagination. But all-in-all Polanski has left us with an enduring thriller propelled by a (refreshingly) character-driven tale.
