Rubicon (2010)
Slow start but really moving now
After watching the 12th episode of this show, I found myself thinking just how good it is.
I have to admit that it started slowly, but what seem to have been random actions or scenes have been woven into a deeply intriguing plot.
I am a big fan of Breaking Bad and expected a lot from AMC on this one. I am not disappointed. This is one of my favorite shows and my favorite new show.
The acting is very good and the scenes are very believable. The interior shots of their workplace are a great backdrop.
There are a lot of characters, but each has its place in the plot. Each character is subtle but over time distinguishable from each other.
Blind Fury (1989)
That butter knife ain't gonna stop no bullet!
Wow, I love this movie!
I have to watch it every time it comes on.
Rutger Hauer kicks some major butt as a blind vietnam vet who comes back to society after spending some time with natives who teach him how to fight.
Noble Willingham is a good evil character, who happens to be in one of my favorite films "Corn Dog Man."
Ok, the acting isn't the greatest from the supporting cast, but who cares?
10/10
The Day After Tomorrow (2004)
The best thing about this film was the two bags of popcorn
My wife and I just got back from seeing "The Day After Tommorrow" and although we were entertained, as we walked out, I thought to myself, that the popcorn was the best thing about the film.
The popcorn was hot and crunchy, just the way we like it, and since the movie theatre offers free refills, and since there were about 25 minutes of previews, including two for the latest Vin Diesel flick, we finished the first bag before the movie started and had to go get another bag.
I must admit that the special effects were very good, although I guess snow isn't really that hard of a special effect.
Jake Gyllenhaal was his usual character, although just a bit smarter this time.
Dennis Quaid was about the same, at some points I thought I was watching a Disney movie.
My wife commented that the homeless guy with the dog actually stole the show.
My favorite line was "I am the president of the electronics club, the math club and the chess club, so if you can find a bigger nerd than me in here let me know."
I had read that this film was kinda a shot at the republicans etc, and although I am a liberal, yes I'm not afraid of that word, I didn't think it was overtly anti-conservative, although the vice president did look a bit like Dick Cheney.
My final thought as I emerged from the theatre into the 100 degree Texas heat was, man its good to live in Texas!
My rating: 6/10
Envy (2004)
The Hot Chick was funnier
At least thats what my wife and I thought as we were watching "The Hot Chick" on cable the night after we saw "Envy."
Ok, I know what you are thinking, and by god you are correct!
Maybe I was jaded since I was expecting some type of devil tie in from the previews. You know... Christopher Walken is the devil, Jack Black makes a deal with him, Walken tries to mess with Stiller, you get the idea. Where DOES the poo go afterall?
Now, I love Jack Black, and I love Ben Stiller, and I especially love Christoper "I gotta have more cowbell" Walken, so what in the world is wrong with this movie?
Honestly, I don't know, I am but a simple cave man movie enthusiast, but I do know one thing, this movie had no spark.
Sure, it was kinda fun to watch Jack Black jump around like a loon, and Ben Stiller fall down and hit his head on something, or the horse on the top of the car, or even the infomercial for "Va Poo Riser", but the problem is that I never really laughed at anything. I just kinda smiled.
I even like stupid movies. For example Dumb and Dumber is one of my favorites. This movie was stupid, but it wasn't really that funny.
I gave it a 4 out of 10, which is very low for me.
The Cat in the Hat (2003)
This really wasn't that good now was it
I like Mike Meyers alot, and although the movie was very well made, this movie just wasn't very good.
Things I liked:
The film looks great, the special effects are amazing, the cgi is seamless, even Mike Meyers in the cat suit looked very good. The town was amazing. The valley shot that started the movie was amazing. Even the credits, although overtly commercial had a nice seuss feel
Things I didn't like:
The shameless plug for universal studios The dance number was boring. The jokes weren't really funny. The cgi fish didn't really have much personality, not like "Finding Nemo." The plot was very thin.
Overall I would give this film a rating of 5 out of 10 which is pretty low for me. I am glad I saw it, but I don't think it was worth the matinee price I paid.
Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd (2003)
Well, that wasn't very good now was it?
I loved Dumb and Dumber, I own it, gave it a 10 in the imdb database and have probably watched it 15 times or more.
When I first saw the trailer for Dumb and Dumberer, I raised my hands in the air and said "YES!"
Unfortunately, after my viewing today, all I could say was "Well, that wasn't very good now was it?"
There are so many things wrong with this film, I can't even start to list them, but the one that bugged me the most was probably the way that they took many of the lines from the first movie and tried to incorporate them in the prequel. Usually this incorporation was either wrong or poorly timed. Granted the one good line from the film "Chicks are for fags" is kinda funny, they tried to use it twice, since there were so few other lines that were memorable. Maybe the next best line was Bob Sagget's tirade of "You got poo all over my car" and "You got poo all over my bathroom."
As a huge fan of the first film, I am glad I saw this film, but it was so bad that I had to come home and watch the original another time to make up for it.
I don't plan on buying this film on DVD, but I will probably watch it again when it comes on cable.
If you do need to see this film, see it at the matinee, at least save yourself a few bucks.
The best thing about it was Eric Christian Olsen. He did a very good job imitating Jim Carey, and I predict that he has a nice future ahead of him in either films or comedy skits.
O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
Very Solid Movie
I went to O' Brother not really expecting anything other than a new Cohen brothers movie. I have not read Homer's Odyssey.
I am a big fan of the Cohen brothers, so I am probably biased to some degree, but I found the movie very entertaining.
I am not a big fan of George Cooney either, but I found myself imitating him in conversation afterwards, with large words and long sentences.
My favorite character had to be Tim Blake Nelson as Delmar. John Turturro was excellent as usual, John Goodman had a good supporting role and as usual, all the extras and supporting casts were very impressive.
This was a stunningly beautiful movie, and definitely should be seen on the big screen. I plan on buying this one also when it comes out on DVD.
I rated this a 8 out of 10, not quite as good as Raising Arizona or Fargo, but right on up there.
Half Baked (1998)
Has to be a classic
This movie was hilarious, especially on W**D. But seriously, I wouldn't take this movie serious. It was extremely funny for a certain culture of our time. Those not of that culture might not find it to be entertaining.
Enjoy!
Lost in America (1985)
Ok, this movie rocks!
After reading the reviews I couldn't believe that there are people that found this movie boring. To me it has some of the best dialog in any movie.
Favorite scene? hard to pick, but probably when Albert Brooks comes down to the casino in his bathrobe looking for Julie Haggerty and finds her chanting..."22,22,22,22." When asked how down she is she says "Down." When asking the casino operator how down she is he says "Down."
Another player says "She really likes 22"
I have seen this movie over and over again and it just keeps getting funnier each time I see it. I am a big Albert Brooks fan, Defending your life is very good and Real Life is also a favorite.
If you like dry humor and great dialog see this one for sure!
Sleepy Hollow (1999)
Good Flick if you like rolling heads
This film was entertaining and well made. I am a big Tim Burton fan so that may have biased my opinion.
The acting was good and the special effects were superb. I lost track of the number of heads, but it probably reached 20 by the end of the picture.
Johny Depp was excellent, and the supporting cast was believable.
The period was represented well in the film as the year 1799 seemed to come to life in Tim Burton's dark vision of greys, mud, and smoke.
I rated this a 8 out of 10, its a good movie but not the greatest movie of all time. I might want to see it on DVD just to slow mo some of the special effects done by Industrial Light and Magic (ILM)
eXistenZ (1999)
I liked this movie alot
I have read the other user comments and noticed that they seem to either love this move or hate it. I also noticed that the ones that hated it seemed to love the Matrix. Well, I loved both movies, and own both on DVD. Im not sure what that says about me, but I do know that I am a big fan of David Cronenberg. I loved videodrome, The Dead Zone, Scanners, Naked Lunch as well as others.
This movie is definitely not for everyone, and it does have flaws. I agree that the ending could have been better, but it did seem appropriate in a way.
The acting on the most part was good, although Jude Law probably stood out as the best lead, with William Defoe as the best supporting.
If you like mind trips, this movie is for you. I would give it an 8/10. I would give Videodrome a 9/10. Whats a 10/10 you ask? hrmmm, Brazil, Raising Arizona, Blade Runner to mention a few.
enjoy!
A Simple Plan (1998)
Gripping, well made drama
This movie was very entertaining and well made. I would recommend any Sam Raimi fan to go see it. It's kind of like a "Fargo" without the humor, and a little more subtle.
Bill Paxon was good as the brightest of three bumpkins, Bridget Fonda was evil as his wife, Billy Bob Thorton was believable as the biggest bumbling country idiot and the supporting cast were very believable.
There is one scene that has some old "Raimi" techniques, and the crowd loved it.
I'm not sure it has to be seen on the big screen but there are some beautiful camerawork. Some of the snow scenes were very white and might not transfer to the small screen.
