Me, Myself and I (1989)
Look for this one, it's worth it!
This movie came out a long time ago, so it might be difficult to find. But if you ever see it in Suncoast or on EBay or in your local video store, you definitely need to check this one out. It's the best! Corey Haim was my favorite actor ever back in the eighties.

Funny, sweet, and very watchable.
Folks, this movie is a keeper! Everybody's been talking about, oh, it's just a cheap knockoff of The Truman Show, only with a stupid guy who volunteered... Not true. This is not a stupid movie. It's not as grand as The Truman Show, but on the other hand it is also more real. Ed is a regular guy; I wouldn't really want to be his best friend, but he's basically decent and I'd go hang out with him. :) And he does show that he is not as stupid as they think he is, and that it's possible to grab some dignity and happiness back from a society that's over-invested in polls and what we all think everyone else thinks. It's funny and sweet, and as a viewer remarks at one point in the movie, there are some great twists. It's not a Great Film or anything, but it is very watchable and you won't feel like you've wasted your seven bucks.
And Ellen DeGeneres is really good in this movie. Her facial expressions are a scream! And most of her lines got big laughs from the audience. I'm a big Ellen DeGeneres fan, and I was so afraid this would be another Mr. Wrong, but it's really a good vehicle for her. And to see her jumping on the bed screaming "I'm the golden queen of television!" is worth the admission price, right there.
The rest of the supporting cast was also pretty great; they made us believe in the mundane messiness of their lives. Their family saga was bizarre, but at the same time, you could see it happening to one of your friends. Woody Harrelson did an amazing job with his character, who was a horrible creature, but, like Ed, had a redeeming quality or two. OK, at least one. And that was one convincingly messed up family, too. Whoo boy.
Anyway. Jenna Elfman is also really wonderful. Although I agree with one reviewer who said that they don't develop her character well enough for us to truly understand why she's so special to Ed, she is also very real. And I wasn't left thinking to myself, oh, those polls referred to in the movie are right, she's not that great... No. If nothing else, they showed us her depth of feeling and her tenderness, as well as her math skills. Elfman also shows us that she can play more than her wonderful Dharma & Greg character; she does not bring any of that neo-hippie attitude to this character. She's just this girl, ya know? And she looks AMAZING in a UPS uniform.
I don't know if the French original, which I'm afraid I haven't had the chance to see, was better. I don't know if it is inherently a worse movie than The Truman Show, but I think it's on a different plane from TTS anyway. They have different goals and shouldn't really have to be compared. So, the upshot of it is this -- here is a movie that is worth seeing.
