Oh dear.

You could probably have more fun, and learn more, from just 'imagining' what an attack on the coast of occupied France would have been like, rather than putting yourself through this perfunctory movie. And call me pessimistic, but Lloyd Bridges, with his slick enthusiasm and even slicker hair, did not make for a believable wartime Major. That said, the reasons why the operation was approved, and also the revelation that at least six of his men were killed in his stringent training program was thought-provoking.

Lemmon won the Oscar for his Save the Tiger performance. He is complimented by Gilford as his partner. Lemmon is excellent as a troubled businessman at the breaking point because of financial troubles; it makes him decide to torch his warehouse so he can collect the insurance money.

The Thin Red Line?
15 June 1999
What's all this talk about comparing the start of this film to Saving Private Ryan, when it is in fact the beginner's guide to The Thin Red Line. Apart from being sensibly shorter and about as complex as Tom and Jerry, it's almost a perfect blueprint.
