The Thomas Crown Affair (1999)
The movie that "Entrapment" wanted so desperately to be...
While I thought "Entrapment" was a good movie, "The Thomas Crowne Affair" is far more entertaining. Both feature similar plots (wealthy, debonair art thief and a gorgeous insurance investigator play a game of cat-and-mouse), but all-in-all this movie was much better. Rather than relying on cool gadgetry and spandex, "Crowne" relies more on the on-screen chemistry between Rene Russo and Pierce Brosnan (quite effectively, I might add). You leave the movie feeling as if James Bond suddenly decided to go crooked. And yes, there are some cool gadgets but they aren't featured so prominently that you think the movie is about them. Go see this moive, you won't be disappointed. Oh, and Rene Russo is naked in like 5 scenes, so all you guys out there will be stoked (i know i was.. hee hee)
American Pie (1999)
funniest movie in a while
Sweet Jesus this movie is hilarious. It brings back so many high school memories, and even if it's been a while since you graduated you'll still appreciate this movie. It deals with teenage coming-of-age and sexuality in a frank yet funny way. It does feature some so-called "gross out humor" but it's not bothersome at all and is actually damn funny, so you should dig it unless you have a giant stick up your... well, you know. The hairgel scene in There's Something About Mary and the "coffee" scene in Austin Powers 2 are worse... Okay it's getting late so I'll stop my comment here, but I can't stress enough how funny this movie was. GO SEE IT.
The '60s (1999)
Hi my name is stereotype, and I am the star of this movie.
This mini-series has like every 60s stereotype: the impressionable youth who gets swept up in the social movements of the 60s, the hometown hero who goes to Vietnam and comes back disillusioned and confused, the foolish teenage girl who gets thrown out of her house and becomes a hippie in California, the over-zealous protest organizer, the angry black youth who becomes a black panther, blah blah blah. There are also some super cheesy parts, like when Michael (one of the main characters) turns out to be the guy in that famous photograph of the protester putting a daisy in the barrel of a Nat'l Guardsman's rifle. Don't get me wrong, it was enjoyable but it could have been a LOT better, and it certainly didn't live up the hype that surrounded it in the weeks prior to its airing. I think NBC could have done a better job, but... oh well. The acting was great with a few exceptions. I'd recommend renting this (NBC released the whole thing on video), but don't expect great things.
The Thin Red Line (1998)
NOT the best war movie ever made... not even close
God this movie was bad. It tried so hard to be a good movie, but fell far short of its goal. The cinematography is incredible, but that's about the only good thing I can say about it. Sub-par performances from all the actors in this incredible ensemble cast, which is more the fault of the worthless script than of the actors themselves. There is little dialogue to explain what is going on, and instead the film relies mainly on soft-spoken, esoteric narration that flows thorughout the whole movie and takes the viewer in and out of flashback scenes (often in places where flashbacks seem unnecessary and unwanted). This narration, by the way, is spoken by several different actors throughout the movie and it is sometimes hard to tell who is saying what, and why. If you really want to see a great WWII film, stick to Saving Private Ryan and avoid this one. This film's only saving grace is its cinematography, so if you are into that kind of thing, rent this. If not, DON'T.
Mr. Baseball (1992)
A pretty good baseball movie
If you like baseball, you'll dig this movie. It's kinda cheesy and it's not exactly Oscar-worthy, but Tom Selleck is pretty convincing as a struggling major leaguer who is traded to a Japanese team. If you've seen all the new releases (except Thin Red Line, which you should avoid like the plague) and you're looking for something light-hearted and entertaining, this movie is a safe bet. Enjoy.. and GO DODGERS!!! (yes they're struggling now, but i can feel a comeback)
