Dirty Pictures (2000 TV Movie)
The movie sucks ... the subject matter doesn't
6 March 2001
As an European I can't help the temptation to comment on this movie. To be totally clear ... as a "movie", Dirty pictures isn't that good, as a documentary, it isn't either. What however is intriguing, is the subject matter ... a country that is so profound of it's first amendment, but on the other hand is so conservative makes me ask a lot of questions. Does the dogma "one's freedom ends where another individual's one start" still apply ? What is art , what is not ? And so on ... I can't answer to most of them, but it sure is interesting to think about.

If choosing, don't choose this !

Well, i can and will be very short. This is a wrong-balanced, non-convincing film that could have been a little bit better. The script seems to not know which way to go ... from funny to cliche-wise serious... it's a bit silly. That plus too much sentences we have heard before "the hacker is in florida, or no, he is in madrid, no he is in ... , he is screwing the signal".

A missed chance

First of all : you should go and see the film...the effects are great, the photography great and the acting, ... well the acting is quite good too. But then comes the thing that bothers me so much : it's so predictable!! I just can't understand how you can mess up such a good script, an interesting plot (although historically incorrect) by putting in so much of the "disney-factors", mostly easy ways of character developing , a few examples of totally unnecessary "disney-factors".

  • After 5 minutes in the movie you already know that mr.tyler will be in the command of a ship, just by repeating and repeating how sad it is that he didn't get the command he hoped for. - second : the scene where the germans shoot the lifeboat with the survivors of the ship they just shot in pieces : "ooooh noo those evil germans, naughty , naughty, naughty" - third : the end scene : so cheap !!! so hollywood !! sunset, fade in catchy tune, and roll credits ... the only thing that wasn't there was hearing bill paxton scream :"today we celebrate our independence day !!"

Shades (1999)
an entertaining movie that doesn't take itself too serious
22 September 1999
This is probably the first belgian movie that has the "allure" of a hollywood picture, which was the director's goal after all. You could see it as a mix between "The Player"and"Silence of the lambs". The absolute + on the movie is the fact that it tells a story and laughs with itself at the same time.

the story is about a film crew which is making a movie about a serial killer, and on the set everything goes wrong. The bit of cliché "film in film" is funny , entertaining and sometimes even exciting. In short : well worth seeing !!
