Mystic River (2003)
Up to last 15 minutes, a great film
Why is it so many really good movies of the last decade fall apart in the last 15 minutes? Is it, "ok, guys, let's wrap it up, I gotta catch the last bus home" or what??? The shift of who is in charge around here after the murder is arbitrary and unconvincing.
Brazil (1985)
It still holds together
This "review" (if that is what it is) is written in 2003 for this now 20 year-old film. It still holds together. It makes sense, it makes for laughter and it makes for the sad realization that the world is not only still the same, it is more so.
Talking Heads (1988)
Four solo pieces for four outstanding performers
Alan Bennett's writing shows us once again that there is something the English have about their language that only a very few American writers sense. I suppose its kind of like those English lawns: its only dirt and a bit of grass seed but you have to mow it for 600 years before you have it.
Scary Movie 2 (2001)
its worthwhile
This is a funny flick and it deserves to be called a humurous movie. I think this is a good party movie to be watched with teens among friends. It has a suprising cast making it funnier to see than the first. Especially the guy with the little gimpy hand who does a great job. So I give it a rating of 6 out of 10, and 10 being the best. I would reccommend this movie, but to only to teens who want a few laughs among friends and only to rent it, because this movie is a one time movie and shouldnt be bought or seen i theaters. :)
The Little Foxes (1941)
A very fine film which survives one marginal performance
I would make the rating a "9" if it were not for Herbert Marshall's stilted style. He was o.k. as "A Man Called X", not much at anything else. Wyler's direction forces the good/bad contrast a bit much when compared to the original play script but it works for the movie.
All of Me (1984)
One scene can a movie make
I gave this "5" film a "6". I probably should have given it a "7". That one scene -- when Steve Martin is first hit on the head with the pot and then begins the wrestling match with his own body -- is worth the price of admission to this otherwise simply "good" comedy. As a comic routine, it ranks right up there with W.C. Fields playing pool or Charlie Chaplin giving the customer a shave.
American Beauty (1999)
A brilliantly made and performed third rate move
A deceptive film. Performances are outstanding, editing is top drawer, direction is inspired, etc. However, the result of all that excellence struck me a third rate movie. The characters are all cliches and the "moral" of the tale pretentious. I am weary of harsh salespeople, mis-understood advertising pluggers, troubled but insightful teen-agers, repressed military men and wholesome gays. The neighborhood of this story is strictly Hollywood. The political correctness of the tale I also found to be gutless. Oh well, its only a movie. . .
