Tango & Cash (1989)
If only to see Kurt Russell in drag!
I admire Kurt Russell. From the days of the Disney movies, to romantic comedies like Overboard, to his action movies such as Big Trouble in Little China and Escape From New York, I have always considered him to be a fine actor. I thought Tango & Cash was a tongue-in-cheek affair, with no-one taking themselves too seriously, but none as much as Kurt Russell. This movie had all the action, suspense, quirky one-liners, but best of all, Kurt Russell in stilettos, stockings and a mini skirt. Bravo to a man carrying on the fine traditions of Monty Python!
The Olden Days (1993)
Laughed my butt off!!!
You can imagine the makers of the Olden Days sitting down over a case of beer or five and getting really silly whilst making this excellent remake/dubover, and having a great time whilst doing so. I was laughing til I cried at the sheer brilliance of it all, the way the d-gen crew were able to take segments of a pre-existing television series, and put together a story that was hilarious. Highlights : the Aboriginal tracker finding the missing Camera 3, the Automatic Teller Machine, and the Argument About Sgt Olden Going Out Of Focus. I just wish that this sort of thing would be done a bit more often.
American Pie (1999)
Nothing like Porkies, thank God!
Well, I thought this movie was going to be one of those puerile farces where getting laid is the Holy Grail that all of the characters aspire to. Leaving the cinema, I was pleased that some of the characters had a bit of depth - in particular, Oz, the jock who joins the choir to plumb its resources, only to fall in love and become truly sensitive. I also loved the character of Finch. I kept thinking that the actor who played him, Eddie Kaye Thomas , reminds me of a cross between a young Nicholas Cage and Steve Buscemi. One to watch out for in future projects? I also admired the fact that condoms were given a large amount of screen time, showing how important they are in today's society. Funny? Yes. Farcical? No.
