A Woman Under the Influence (1974)
Declared a 'National Treasure' by the Library of Congress
This is a painful movie to watch. The viewer feels like an eavesdropper, dragged through the pain of two very unstable people who love one another deeply. The end, as simple as it is, is a revelation. As much violence (psychological and physical) as there is in their relationship, it is none of our business, they make each other happy in a way that no one else can understand. Cassavettes is a genius, and this film is art.
I'm No Angel (1933)
West's masterpiece
This movie, which West had complete creative control over, is her masterpiece. While 'She Done Him Wrong' is uneven and confusing 'I'm no Angel' is brilliant throughout. West is all woman without a bit of cat or mouse, and there is delicious chemistry between West and Grant (although this movie was made the same year as 'I'm no Angel', Grant looks older and his acting is stronger). And as much fun as it is to see masters at work in 'My Little Chickadee' (and imagine West and Feilds writing together), this movie outshines even that. If you want to know what Mae West is all about, this is the film to see.
Born Yesterday (1950)
Somewhat disappointing
I am a huge fan of Judy Holliday, but I was disappointed in this film, which she won an Oscar for. She's good in this and shines over the story, but compared to 'It should happen to you' and 'Bells are Ringing' her performance is pretty straight, not approaching the crazy brilliance of her other films. Holden is fine, but the propaganda about this great land the US of A gets very tired very fast.
