The Fix (2005)
Some great acting
I saw this short film, and it had some great production values. This is a gritty story of a struggling boxer and his overbearing father, who took part in a fixed fight killing his career. Now his son is a boxer, and faces the same decision in his life. Will his father give him the fix?
What strikes me as interesting was that, even though it's a familiar story, the production values were incredible as it felt like a major feature. The story is pretty much what you expect it to be-- they are breaking no new ground here.
Some of the performances where really good. Travis Aaron Wade is a future star -- what a powerful performance. He has this soft raspy voice that is rough, yet gentle. Robert Patric looks as crusty as ever.
This is a great introduction for the director. Must have been a really big budget for a short film.
Stonewall (1995)
Fictional
While Stonewall hits upon some facts about the Stonewall Riots, it is pretty much based upon fiction. Much of this movie is apocryphal. For example, the who idea that the Stonewall Riots were somehow influenced by Judy Garland's death was suggested by the homophobic police-- as a bigoted joke.
New research shows that the Stonewall Riots were started by what most people would classify as sissies from nearby bars after hearing that police were beating up Stonewall patrons. There weren't very many drag queens allowed in the Stonewall.
The police who conducted the bust were not from the precinct that was in charge of the area; but a separate group dealing with morals violation. In fact, once barricaded inside the bar, they called for help, but the Sixth Precint wouldn't help, having already been paid off by the mob who owned the bar.
Dancer in the Dark (2000)
Really awful
Well this is possibly the most self absorbed piece of c**p I have ever seen. The plot is predictable, pedantic and preachy. SPOILER ALERT
I lost all total interest in Bjork's character, Selma, once she chooses to be hanged. The motivation of the fact that Selma's best friend, Kathy, could only raise payment for an appeal by taking the money Selma saved for her son's operation is so coincidental.
Selma's assertion that nothing bad ever happens in a musical should have seen West Side Story.
The musical numbers are uninspired. I left with the question about Bjork's performance. Was this acting or is it, as I suspect, Bjork playing herself. Not worth the $9 I paid to see it.
