A Town Like Alice (1981)
Sorry
I have read the book and I have seen the 1956 film version and I remembered this mini series with great fondness. However, I have just watched the original five hour version on video and it is flawed. There is far too much of Gordon Jackson's character and his endless repetition of events we have just seen and his weary soul searching (and since when has Strachan been pronounced Strawn?) and the second half in Australia is so dull (when it ought not to be). The programme only comes to life when Helen Morse is on screen and the first half in Malaya when she dominates is gripping at times. Dorothy Alison was also exceptional as Mrs Frith and I regret the programme makers didn't make up a scene to show or tell us what happened to her.
Evolution (2001)
Dire
A truly dreadful film that barely raised a laugh in the cinema I was in.
It started off making fun of two fat boys and then it got worse.
Professional women falling down, hilarious, mooning, hilarious, bum and fart jokes, hilarious.
The black character despite attempts at modern sensibilities may have well as been called Stepin Fetchitt. This was sexist and moronic and let's not talk about the science.
However, the worst, worst, thing about this film was that it wasn't funny.
My Favorite Wife (1940)
Disappointing
I was really looking forward to this being a fan of Cary Grant, Irene Dunne and screwball comedies, but I was very disappointed.
My main concern was the dismal treatment of Gail Patrick's character (Bianca). It wasn't her fault that Irene Dunne (Ellen) wasn't dead yet she is treated so rudely and offhandedly that I found it irritating and frustrating.
In addition it often simply wasn't funny.
Don't waste your time on this, watch and watch again "The Awful Truth" starring the same pair instead, and contrast the treatment of Ralph Bellamy's character with that of Patrick's.
