Ice Age (2002)
Terrific fun for Everyone
This is a wonderful film, full of laughs and a terrific message for kids. The animation is first rate and the actors involved are delightful. Following the "herd" has never been so much fun. The movie is perfect for any age. It was enlightening to discover what really happened to the dodo bird and to sit back and just enjoy a fun family film. Adults will not be disappointed with this film. Parents, if it is your turn to take the youngsters to the movies, you will be pleased with this one.
North by Northwest (1959)
Outstanding, well written, great adventure
One of the great movies. Well crafted, it wears its age well. The story, the writing, the acting, all terrific. The DVD is wonderful and provides the clearest print I have ever seen. If you have only seen this classic on late night TV, buy the DVD and watch it again. This is one worth seeing again.
Sydney (1996)
Terrific debut from P.T. Anderson, well written dialogue.
P.T. Anderson has proven himself to be a brilliant new talent, incredibly skilled with the pen and behind the camera. Although a bit too much in love with himself (listen to his commentary on the DVD's), his first two movies have both showed amazing strengths. Hard Eight, a wonderful story about a man seeking redemption, at least within himself, is played by Phillip Baker Hall, one of those actors who never seems to give a bad performance. The supporting cast is equally as strong with John C. Reilly, Sam Jackson and Gwyneth Paltrow both doing a great job. Along with Boogie Nights, these two films provide as solid a start to a career as one could hope for. Anderson is wonderful with the camera and with the actors, giving us a story that keeps us interested throughout.
Liberty Heights (1999)
terrific movie, well written and acted
This is a fine little movie, the kind we expect from Barry Levinson. Continuing in the tradition of Diner and Avalon, he has brought us a detailed, warm slice of American life, and with that provided us something to think about today. All the characters are people we care about and want to know more about. It is a shame this movie is being overlooked in the holiday season, but if it is playing near you, go see it. Though not as good as Diner or Avalon, Liberty Heights is superior to most anything else you will find at the multiplex.
