What the &%*$ was this?
21 August 2000
I've been a comedy fan for as long as i can remember, and this is most definately the WIERDEST comedy i've seen in my life (& this said I own over 150 comedies, and have seen thousands). I was going through the videos in a local store when it was selling them off and shutting down after 15 years (i found some juicy &*$! in there), and i bought this film on it's National Lampoon connection, but this wasn't anything like i expected, but it ended up being really intriguing. My first impression in watching this was... What was the writer smoking when he came up with this? Whatever it was it had to be strong. Other people have explained the plot (if you want to call it that) but i just have a few questions for whoever has seen or had anything to do with this film. What was up with the villain guy's voice, Corey Feldmans outfits or hair, the evil guys hideout, or, hmmm, any other aspect of this film? All of this said, a few jokes do hit a mark, and despite the, poor scripting, plot, camera work and acting, there are some quite pretty girls. Pity about the rest. Ironically, if you like comedies, this is worth a look, because you will remember it as an experience, and to be truly different to any comedy (at least to me) that i've seen before

Gimme Gimme Gimme (1999–2001)
Is this Satan's Spawn?
13 August 2000
I can't believe the reviews this film is getting! I've seen this show once and it was probably the stupidest, most terribly acted piece of drivel i've ever had the misfortune to be subjected too. Kathy Burke gives exactly the same role as every other in her career as the lad-ette who is unnecessarily crude and uncouth, and the other lead character (I think his name is James Dryfus), plays, shock horror, the same role once again as every other in his career, the failing gay actor. (e.g.the thin blue line) (- Actually, i'd watch out James, from viewing this drivel, you'll soon be paralelling your life with your role in this program.) The entirity of the humour is based around two jokes. The gay guy telling the common girl 'you're fat and ugly', and the common girl telling the gay guy 'you're gay and a bad actor'. This is not amusing once, let alone 35 times per episode. The supporting characters as well as the leads were complete stereotypes, and i found the whole thing to be completely unbelievable. This film would appeal to the kind of people that found 'Kevin & Perry Go Large' (perhaps the worst 'teen' 'comedy', and i use both words here loosely, because they are both inaccurate in describing this waste of film), as they will enjoy the terrible characters, pathetic script, and lack of plot. This one could have come straight out of Enfield's line up of characters.

This is great

Sometimes, a film made for the childish audience can transcend time and generations and become widely accepted by all. Rocketman with Harland Williams did, and i believe that so has Ernest Goes To Camp. There is just a serious enough a theme to the film of the heartless land developer trying to drive the low earning camp off the property, but Jim Varney manages to keep it silly enough to be entertaining. This film has some great moments, and it is worth the *now* retail price of like $5-8 just to see the fashions these kids in the late 80's wore. Also, being 17 now, i grew up at the same time as this film. Look out for the song i'm awfully glad it's raining sung by Varney. It makes me teary everytime i hear it.

'Call me mommy little billy'

This is a great film. It's definately the funniest Disney film i've ever seen, though, while being great slapstick comedy with excellent delivery by Harland Williams, it also gets in the morals & ideals rife in Disney films. This is unique in that it's the only film i know of that i could have watched with 10 yearolds while not being ashamed, and also watch with some buds with a few beers. It's great & unique in that way Harland Williams carries this film, which is understanding as it is a vehicle for him, but the supporting cast is also excellent and the film was great for me. Since there is constant association with the ground team, you don't get the boxed in effect that you find in many travelling films, e.g. Speed, Speed 2 & the film never slows down for me. The best bits to watch for are the machine that spins Williams round & the bitchin' Mr Magoo impression.

Cool, but too many stereotypes
7 August 2000
This film was good fun, and Rodney as always stole the show. Unfortunately, with the jokes it seemed when it rained it poured, though when it didn't, there was a drought. Some of the film - the beggining few scenes, the shows all through the film & some various little bits like the wedding were great & really funny, mainly thanks to Rodney, but it seemed they just didn't think when they cast of something 'cause some of the actors JUST DIDN'T suit their roles. Burt Reynolds must have done this to stay out of the red 'cause the role REALLY wasn't him & the stooge guy who worked for him also was terrible in his part. I was cringing through some of their scenes. This film has enough funny scenes in it to last on you, & a couple of great scenes which remind you why Rodney Dangerfield is your favourite comedien - In particular 'but wait... there's even more!' Unfortunately, it just doesn't quite gel. You need a couple of beers with it, & then it's just great :)

18 Again! (1988)
Brings a smile :)

This is a heart warming film. I'm not a typical person to like 80's cinema, though i do like all manners of comedies, though this is great. I've never seen a George Burns film & i really liked it. He obviously passed his comedy talent on to Pauly Shore and it was interesting to see a film in which Pauly was an actor & not a comedien playing an actor. You know what really would have been interesting. If this was made once Pauly had his image established, there could've been a couple of great scenes with Burns trying to understand what he was saying & stuff. This film is great, & you don't have to be a fan of 80's cinema to enjoy it throughly. Two very enthusiastic thumbs up. Also, some might say that this has played too much on a body switching premise of the late 80's but i think it had a nice angle on it, and i loved this film

Santa Claus (1985)
My claim to fame... kinda
9 July 2000
(I'll explain my summary title in my review) This film has always held a special place in my heart... perhaps its the prescence of that loveable scamp Dudley Moore, or maybe the scene when that fat kid learns to fly using the candy canes (but only to get some cookies from a top shelf), or maybe even when all the mechanically made toys break & everyone starts crying (cruel, but funny). No. To me this film is my claim to fame. My Great Uncle was one of the elves in this film (true, and ironically i'm 6'2), but the whole essence of this film that it was one of the lowest grossing films ever (i think), and is still played EVERY CHRISTMAS WITHOUT FAIL just makes it great for me. Sigh...finally my family has something to be proud of.

This is one awesome film. One of the greats in which they can keep the pace up without really having a plot for the full 90+ minutes. It's compared to Dazed & Confused SO many times, and why, because they both portrait teen life in the 70's? The truth is that these films are completely different. I own both & though Dazed and Confused is good for a few times, the plot gets kinda boring... I mean, in reality, how many 'last day of school' comedies can you watch, even if this one does have a 70's twist. The Stoned Age, on the other hand goes its own way & it's beautiful for that. It probably had a low budget, but you grow to love (& even though he's *supposed* to be a loser) connect too with Joe, especially as he just gets his as kicked all the time. Another great character was Tack. This guy's so funny 'cause he's so clueless, 'hey, get naked or shut up' is probably his best line, though he has a load through the film. I also like it that unlike most teen comedies (dazed & confused included, all the actors haven't come straight off the modelling track. They're mostly ordinary looking, and the film in my view is better for that. This is a great film. I've watched it loads & the scene after the girls are talking in the toilet always cracks me up. :)

Mallrats (1995)

Great film... Why didn't it do better in the box office?
20 June 2000
Warning: Spoilers
POSSIBLE LIGHT SPOILERS It's rare nowerdays that you find a sensible teen comedy... & this is no exception to the rule. The basic story goes that two guys are dumped by their long term girlfriends and to console themselves, they head for their favourite place... the mall. Then, once they get there, they realise that (& bear with me on this) the father of one of their ex-girlfriends has set up his TV gameshow on a stage in the mall, and that the ex-girlfriend is going to be one of the contestants on the show (the show is a typical blind date, 3 guys contest for a holidays with the girl) & then he has to stop the show to get the girl. This is a stupid plot, but the silm is hilarious. Brodie played by Jason Lee has some brilliant lines, as does Jeremy London (the QB from dazed and confused), though to me the two best parts in this film were undoubtedly Jay & Silent Bob. They stole every scene they were in, and the blueprints for their actions were great. This is an awesome film. if you're looking for an easy on the mind, funny comedy, give this a go. (p.s. you also get to see Joey Lauren Adams topless so the film is pretty much worth it just for that)

Sandler at his best
5 June 2000
I love this film... you can't not do if you like any of Adam Sandler's. This film has a great cast who all play off each other brilliantly, especially Chris McDonald & the guy from Rocky & I can't believe it didn't do better in the cinema in England... in fact it might have only been on selected releae here 'cause I can't remember it coming out. Sandler is great in it & all you people that say he mumbles his lines, it's his style & it's that which attracts the audience to him because he seems so non threatening to the audience. This is a beautiful film & it demonstrates the ability of all the actors brilliantly... Adam Sandlers temper, Chris McDonalds snyde nature, the loveable grandma's loveableness. It seems kinda the actors as charicatures, but instead it's just good casting. This film is awesome... I think i've seen it about 80 times & i still haven't got tired of it.

This film is animal house's sequel
3 June 2000
This is such a great film. Rodney Dangerfield singlehandedly equals the legendary 'Animal House' in Back To School, with inspired delivery & lines. There are just SO MANY jokes here that I laugh if I just think of any point in this film. There is a great supporting cast, though it seemed Robert Downey Jr was at points trying to upstage Rodney. If you get a chance, watch this film & record this film. you'll be kicking yourself if you don't. 10/10

Off the Mark (1987)
This film rules

Have any of you ever thought... I can make a cool comedy after seeing some great one like airplane or naked gun (pretty much anything with Leslie Neilson in it). If I made a comedy, i think it'd be just like this. Any opportunity this film gets to poke fun... it does, & does well. This said, unlike many comedies, it holds its plot well (which incidentially revolves around the breasts of the lead guys girlfriend, not that there's anything wrong with this), and has a few classic lines. My favourite involved the alcoholic coach and the so called '6 pack'. This film is great. if you ever see it, snap it up & you won't regret it.

Don't touch this movie with a ten foot barge pole
27 May 2000
Last week my local video store shut down, and being a fan of both skiing and 'bad' comedies as many of them have been labelled (esp old and new school SNL films) & from the cover this film looked distracting if not cinematically brilliant. What followed was almost 40 minutes (I gave up after that point) of the worst, least amusing, waste of film that I have ever sat through. The filming was pathetic, the script was perhaps the worst and least coherent I've ever witnessed and even if you love these films, this crosses the line between funny bad and stomach turning, heart wrenchingly, uncomfortable on your favourite couch bad. In one word PATHETIC. leave this film, burn this film, aviod this film forever.
